I am sitting in one of my favorite places on the planet. Just got done watching a couple of bugling bulls across the drainage. There has been quite a bit of bugling for this early in the season. I called in a nice 5 point yesterday and should have killed him but a second of hesitation cost me. Oh well I have the whole season to hunt. Life is good!
They are screamed my here as well. I was enjoying my coffee in spike camp this morning listening to them bugle.
Good luck!
Cool! Save some for later, we leave the 12th to hunt the last two weeks of the season.
Mike
Thanks for the update! I'll be up there on Friday for the month. Can't wait.
You're killing me! I don't leave home until the 15th. This isn't making the waiting any easier!!
(But keep the updates coming please!!! :readit: :bigsmyl: )
If I had a dollar every time I hesitated and it cost me...
Glad you are into them mark...keep after it and keep us posted.
Good luck!
I leave for Colorado in two days. Getting excited.
CHuckC
Leaving in 10 days for New Mexico!
Leaving on the 15th with my son. We will be chasing them around New Castle, CO. With Silver Spur Outfitters.
That's great Mark good luck.
They are quiet in my little secret pocket on the front range. 82 degrees at 11,000' on Sunday. Hope it cools down. They are there, plenty of sign but also plenty of moonlight. My little spot is too small so I avoid pushing it.
Come the 13th I'll head for some bigger country.
I was fortunate enough to find myself in the middle of bulls bugling all weekend. Going off like crazy in the mornings and evenings and even the occasional bugle from their beds. Called in 5 bulls, but alas I've only got a cow tag because of drawing a 1st season rifle this year! Shot myself in the foot with that decision, never again!
The Oregon coast was dead silent if you don't count the poring rain and 80 mph wind gusts on Saturday. we had trees coming down everywhere... nasty hunting weather... even after things calmed down, there wasn't any bugling going on in my area.... i headed home again Monday night.
think i'm going to go east on the 15th hopefully the wild fires have tamed down by then.

Just depends where you are I guess. I'm with you on this one MONTEREY. you would think our tent had a light on in it the moon was so bright. We were in t shirts at 8:30 heard and saw nothing.
I get to stay at home and work :( so I'm not so excited.
But good luck to those of you that are heading into the Elk woods!
Thats great.. I leave next Thursday to chase them for 2 weeks.

I too will be leaving on the 17th to hunt the last of the season ... excited!!!!
you guys are killing me
Yep packing in on the 18th. Getting harder to stay at work reading these threads...good luck everyone!
My son and I are headed out tomorrow. Weather calls for chance of evening showers and a cold front on Sunday, with a waning moon all week. Perfect early season conditions, now if we can just get into them.
Leaving today and sure hope they are bugling some since I am hunting a totally new area for me and definitely helps to locate them when they are a little vocal! Got a couple of guys that contacted me that are bear hunting in there this weekend so should have a report soon.
Relocating to north idaho Sept 25th. Won't get there till Oct 10th. Hope the big boys are still bugling by then.
Good luck to all those heading out.
Our season opens the 12th but I will most likely start around the 15th .... and it goes to the 24th. :archer2: good luck to all and be safe
Good luck everyone. I am back home for a recharge, heading back up tomorrow. No more close calls but have been still seeing (and hearing) a few elk. Have seen two bears and a few deer, I have a deer tag too.
Like several above leaving on the 18th for the last of the season. Don't think I can look at any more threads. Gets me to antsy, I can't wait. Only been waiting for this about 350 days, if you know what I mean. Good luck to every one, pick a spot and send er home.
You guys leaving for the last week shouldn't sweat it. It's a great time to hunt I've had major best encounters on the last week. They'll be bearded up by then. Go easy on the calling.
I'm driving out leaving on the 9th and hunting the season out. Hunting the Rifle area.
They were screaming today, though the wind and weather weren't great at all. Called in several, my dad had the close opportunity on a big guy that got away and I let all of my bulls swim for another day.
Cant wait to get back up there monday! Good luck guys.
It is that time of year for sure. Heard a few bugles this year but I only have a few days left in the season.
:readit:
Wednesday I had a small bull ripping up at tree in front of me but just couldn't close the gap! I love this time of year
Heading out on the 12th for Northern Alberta with my son and son-in-law.Quading 30 miles into the backcountry for Archery Elk AND Moose, bears, wolf and hopefully many grouse, can't sleep no more LOL
One week and a wake up and off to CO. This will be my first elk trip but hopefully not my last.
We saw quite a few elk this weekend. Lots of small heards of 8-12 some most groups had 2 bulls and heard only 1 bugle. I think this week will be primo where we are hunting.
Yall are killing me..I'm stuck at home this year..about to pull out the rest of whats left up there..nothing in this world like the sound of a bugling elk
Jealous
Back home again for some chores and a re-stock. Was a little slower this week, still hearing a few bugles. I got close to one bull but got busted by a cow. I have seen 3 bears and had one on my trailcam. There was a little frost the last two mornings but still getting warm during the day. Will be back at em at least a few days next week and then the last week of season.
What a great season, for many reasons. I got to hunt 20 days this past month (18 solo). I was into bulls almost everyday and they were bugling from day one until the end. I saw more and bigger bulls in my area than I have seen in years. Many many close encounters. I had elk at 3 yds and bugling bulls at less than 20 yds. Never got a shot. So many things have to go right to get that shot, especially chasing them on the ground. But oh what fun it is. Here are few pics.
