I'm taking the Jeffery recurve out tomorrow for a maiden voyage. Hopefully it's a good year. I've shot 3d all summer and practiced daily, almost. Who else got this nervous before their first trad hunt??? Sheesh. I've been thinking about this all summer. 500 spine carbons with 150 grain woodsman broad heads will be stuck in the quiver, so here's hoping. Good luck to everyone else this year. :D

Hope you have a great hunt.

Lived in NM '80-'84, both daughters born there, and made several elk hunts there as well. Hope you take pictures and share your hunt with us. Good luck and enjoy the experience.

Good luck, keep us posted

Your relentless practice will carry you through the moment beginning with pressure on the string. Don't worry about it your mind and body through repetition knows what to do. Let us know if you are successful.

"Who else got this nervous before their first trad hunt???"
uhhh.. I still get antsy and nervous just thinking about hunting, much less hunting!! I hope you connect.
-
this is my 49th elk season and still have issues at times so enjoy the ride and hope it last a long time to come!!!
-
Good luck. You will become an elkaholic for sure. It is an addiction!

Weeellll I sure got close but the wind didn't behave. I have hunted elk for 20 years but never with a bow. A bull and 3 cows came into a newfound honey hole but a spike came in behind us. I nearly maneuvered in for a shot on the spike but I think he winded me. A bit over 20 yards. Just for fun I duplicated the shot at home and nailed it in my back yard. Bag targets taste nasty, though. It was a great day out with my dad. I THINK I have about 12 or so elk under my belt, but none were that close. 9 days to go.

Good luck to you!

You're certainly on the right track with getting them close!

Like many it wasn't until I picked up a trad bow that I really learned how to hunt. Sounds like that passion is getting instilled into you.
Best of luck. Keep us posted on how you do. Remember to get some pictures of your adventures with you father.

I've got some low quality I phone video and some pics. I'll post some later on. No kill yet but I could quit the season and be happy. My goal was to see elk. I've had a bad run of luck. Man oh man did that success get bestowed upon me in spades. Forgive any poor grammar and punctuation in most of my posts. My phone is smarter than I am.
Though not trad hunting, my wife still has a chance to bring home meat in October. I got lucky with her. I still have 5.5 days left, so anything can happen, but given that I'm a rookie on this hunt, I'm a happy camper with what has happened thus far. This is a long post but I have one final thought. Age, experience, and maturity have definitely assisted in redefining my definition of success.

Well I stuck one this am too high. Lost her after the blood ran out. I thought it was a good hit, judging by the blood but she seemed unperturbed as she walked up the mountain.
-
Don't give up on the one you stuck. They are hearty critters and can travel a ways before they go down. Pick up the blood trail and do a grid search. Many times the blood peters out because the pump is giving out and she may be down close by.

I would worry less about setup and more on hunting an area and hunting hard to put one on the ground than about your setup.
Good luck brother. Be sure and take us along please....

Oh I think I hit up above the lungs. I think it was a passthrough but didn't hit the good stuff. We searched for 3.5 hours. Kept going back to last blood and started again. We never found the arrow. Everything is incredibly thick after the fires. Lots of 6 foot tall aspens and locusts. Stinging nettle has grown huge as well. The way she went up that hill, I don't think she was hurting all that much. With as hot as it was today she's ruined if she did go down. I don't think she did, though. Still sucks. This is the first big game animal I've lost. It was about 60 yards of good blood and little bitty drops after that. Did a lot of crawling to find those last ones.

Well, we went back up today and are pretty sure we saw the same cow up and about that I stuck yesterday morning. There was a bit of blood where she was, but very little. It concerns me that she hasn't stopped yet, if that blood was indeed from this AM. We bumped them out hiking down out of the same honey-hole about 10:30.

Well today was the last day I was able to hunt. It was bittersweet. I'll be wondering about that cow. That's the first big game animal I've ever lost. The only thing I can think to chalk it up to is bad luck. I can't be certain I did not hit her high, though. The arrow is nowhere to be found, so I can't even look at that. However, I think next year will be a different story, if I draw and if I get another shot. Family time calls this weekend. My dad will be hunting starting Tuesday. I still have turkey and bear tags left, so we shall see where the season goes from here. Good luck to everyone else and good night.
