Title: South Cox's high country buck
Post by: LongbowArchitect on August 31, 2015, 03:17:00 PM
My buddy South Cox from Stalker Stickbows sent me this photo of the high country buck he shot yesterday in Colorado. He snuck up on it while it was bedded down and shot it from 4 yards.  (http://%20 [/IMG]

Ya South has some serious stalking skills. These are his words from his email this morning "Snuck up to 4 yards on this guy, I'm pretty deadly at that range!"

South came down long enough to drop off his buck at the local butcher and then headed back up to the Colorado high country to chase some elk. I'd have wished him luck but it doesn't look like he needs it.

Four yards! That's incredible. Seems like he knows what he's doing. I too bought one of his Wolverine FXT recurves. What a shooter. Would love to try it out on a DIY hunt for a muley but at my age doesn't look like it's going to happen.

I don't condone those kind of long risky shots, but it worked out well anyway.
Seriously - 4yds!  I can't sneak up on a glass of water -  most excellent job!  I want to be like South when I grow up.

There is a really cool podcast that Brian Call did on South Cox. It was good. I hadn't heard of South Cox for a long time until I saw the podcast.

It was done in his shop and he went through building one of his custom recurves

Thanks for all of the kudos guys! Had a great hunt, as you can see...though t couldn't find an elk that wanted to come home with me. We did get the whole thing on video. i'm hoping to be able to wrap it up  after next fall.

Saw his video, very cool. Hope he does another. Where he hunts, conditions are ideal for spot and stalk. I understand that he hikes in pretty far, which probably gets him away from 99 percent of hunters. I recently hunted the Kaibab.  Spot and stalk, very challenging, everything was dry, like trying to walk on potato chips. Nearly everyone road hunts so all you have to do is get 100 yards off a road and the place is yours and so are the bigger bucks which I saw in groups of up to 9. Try stalking that! Still, got close a couple times.  Will be writing full story for Traditional Bowhunter Mag.

NICE! That's what bowhunting is supposed to be, I saw a TV show the other day where the kid shot a buck with his compound at like 94 yards....lame. Congrats to South!!
