Thinking of a new head for this coming seasons( except turkey)hunts. Bear, whitetails and maybe Moose this year are (hopefully) in the forecast.
I want a 2 blade head, 145-160 grs.
I want( read:NEED) an easy to sharpen and KEEP sharp head.
And it has to fly well and quiet.
Grizzly's are out; tried them last year and I CAN'T get them sharp enuff.
So, what do you use and why? and what do you recommend?
I tried Eclipse heads, I found they are too thick at the tip to allow my accusharp to touch them up. Nice head though.
Thanks.

I'm going to try Larry Hanify's Abowyer head this year. Matter of a fact in mid March at the Texas Sweet hunt. I shoot fairly light bows 50#'s and think its the way to go. After reading Dr Ashby's reports and how highly he reguards this head for penatration. It appears to be a easy to sharpen head will let you know more after giving them there due. You can check them out at www.abowyer.com. (http://www.abowyer.com.) They are not cheap but then again what is? Nothing of quality.

STOS and/or ACE!!

Older Bear Green Razorheads, or Zwickey Blackdiamonds. What I've always had, used, and never had any complaints since I was old enough to hun, so I never changed.
-
I like the Simmons Tigersharks, flat file, and ceramic sticks. 2 blade bh with 1 9/16" cut that flies very well.....Mike
-
I have probably killed something with every older type there is but I graduated from Zwickey to Magnus I's and now wouldn't shooting anything but Ace 200's.
-
My true favorite would be a knapped piece of flint but it takes me forever to make an arrowhead good enough to hunt with. Next up is Zwickey 2 blades because they are simple, tough, and I like the hardness because it keeps an edge better.
-
Ribtek 145 sharpens super quickly with accusharp and is deadly
-
You're talking about glue-ons, I take it? I would second Darke Greene's opinion on Zwickey's. The tempering on the blade is right on, they're easy to sharpen and keep sharp. Ribtek and Magnus are another brands I've had very good experiences with.
Good luck,
-bm.

MODOCS!!!!!!!!!! and SNUFFERS...(note MODOCS had few problems , company was sold and seem to have worked out the ferruel problem...my 3rd choice is WW Wensel Woodsman...I have some now... love em!!! :goldtooth: use adaptors on them for wood arras...opps sorry ya wanted 2 head...Eclipse wood be the others I have..excellent BH
-
Yes, it would have to be glue-ons.
Good response so far.

Ribtek, They are incredibly tough and durable. They are easy to sharpen they have many different grain weights to choose from and the price is good.
-
Zwickey's or Magnus II here. Both are slayers.
-
200 grain ACE head, easy to sharpen and keep sharp.
Accusharp won't touch them up?? get yourself a good file!
Regards, Bert
-
I like the 160 grain Simmons treesharks. They fly good, and are 1 9/16" wide. The hole's they leave are incredible.
-
Single Blade....Zwickey and Magnus. Haven't seen the new Modocs or tried them. The older Modocs had a problem of the blade coming apart from the ferrule and were tough to sharpen because of the raised ferrule. I did like the 3:1 ratio of the Modocs but the older ones just didn't hold up.
My personal choice would be Zwickey, with Magnus close behind.
-
No one likes the Grizzlys?
-
I use 160 gr. Simmons treesharks. Easy to sharpen, deadly accurate, tough and makes a good hole, The design helps catch arteries and slice them.
-
Eclipes,Zwickey and bear razerhead I've had good luck with all of these.I really like the Eclipse but they are a little hard to sharpen but when you get them sharp they stay that way. My 2 cents :D :D :D
-
Grizzlies have never impressed me. THere's no way you can convince me that big, dull point doesn't retard penetration.
Anyone have a recommendation for a screw in two blade? Probably going to need some new heads this year.
-
STOS, cause they are easy to sharpen, close to 3-1 ratio, fly well and kill well.

Cary didn,t I show ya my sharpener when I was up there? It,ll sharpen any 2 blade head very very well by anybody. It,s really that easy to use.
I,ve used the magnusII before and it seemed like a good head.I'd also consider the simmons line
As for screw-ins Phantoms are nice and they come in SS now wieghin in at 225 I think. All of the above mentioned heads with steel adaptors would be sweet on a carbon arrow. My ICS 400's with 250grs up front wiegh in @ 570grs
While I know it's not a 2 blade thunderheads have taken a whole lot of critters over the yrs and come scary sharp outta the package. There's others too but no need to get to far off base LOL
PS I use the Gatco knife sharpening system and it can be gotten from Cabela's
-
If you can find em, pearson deadheads. Ace and ribteks follow for availability and reason described above.
-
Big Dog, I've probably got a few 160 Ribtek's I could send you. For me it's 190 gr. Ribteks.
-
I'm hooked on the Simmon's Interceptors , I have no problem sharpening them , they fly great and cut like no other , my thoughts , Fred
-
I've been very happy with Ace Standards for the past few years. They come in weights from 125 to 160 grains.
-
very hard to beat a zwickey delta. as barking mad said the temper is perfect where it is easy to sharpen but holds a edge very well. in 35 years I have never had a failure. I have strayed a few times but am back for good with zwickey (but I shoot the bleeder version)
-
I will be bringing some 145 stos to the trading blanket next month !!!!!!!
-
:bigsmyl:  is there anything you want to trade me???? huh? huh? huh?

I like the Ace Express 165. Good design, well made, very tough, straight, single thickness blade is very easy to sharpen and holds its edge very well. Good width and length, too. They are also very good at doing what broadheads are supposed to do. The Ace Standards, Zwickeys and Ribtecs are very good as well.
-
Zwickeys, Magnus and STOS. Those and most of the heads already mentioned are all good. IMO, they all require some time to get razor sharp and to keep them that way.
-
MODOC........Cause their factory sharp and flight and penetration is on the money... :clapper:
-
200 grain Ace and an acusharp will touch them up and it will sharpen them, few strokes and mine are shaving sharp. I do it all the time. Big head=big hole. I also like the old Hunters Heads and the 200 gr Simmions safaris.

I like the Hill broadhead. They are difficult to sharpen, at least to my standards. I have several Deadheads from years past that I like also, which are very easy to sharpen. There are other broadheads out there that I'm sure would work well for me, I just don't shoot enough big game to be able to try them all. Alaska jim

Carey,
Try some 160gr STOS. I use the 125gr steel insert to screw them onto my carbons. They are cheap $22.00 to $25.00 for six and they sharpen razor sharp with a $5.00 file. They are made by Magnus for STOS. In my opinion they are second only to the Silver Flames but at $25.00 each for the Flames they are a special purpose head.

If you want to use a screw-in broadhead that compares favorably with Grizzly El Grandes, look at Outback Supremes Outback\\'s Master Page (http://users.ncable.net.au/%7Ewoody/index.htm) . Mr. Woodward recently discontinued his 160-grain version. His 145-grain Supreme has exactly the same dimensions -- all Supremes are alike -- except where the 160s have .071-inch blades (1.8 mm), 145s have .063 (1.6 mm).
Mr. Woodward offers these BHs in several configurations. I arranged for a production run of his 160s that incorporate every verified penetration enhancement Ed Ashby has identified to date.
Supremes price per unit, including postage, (in lots of 12, I believe) are about the same price as El Grandes, perhaps a little less??
Here's a graphic of a Supreme with tanto point and single bevel. Notice how the Supreme's design supports the ferrule. They are short for their three-inch hypotenuse.

the old bear greenheads. I suck at sharpening broadheads and often have to make a few arrows for my buddy so that he will sharpen them for me.. but since i got some of the greenheads i dont have to make him arrows anymore. I can get them like razors.. I about crapped myself the first i touched it to my arm and it actually cut hair and didnt just scratch the dry skin off my arm. I will always shoot those from here on out.
-
Well my favorite is the Simmons because it is bigger and better than anything else. :)It would not be a good head for someone that was not good at sharpening however.Go with the Stos. They are small but a 3 year old can put an edge on one.
-
Do you get better arrow flight with a narrower head like the Stos or Grizzly?
-
snag, I shoot both simmons Tigersharks and Stos out of my bow and both fly equally well
Joe
-
160gr Ace Standards or 160gr STOS
-
I haven't tried a lot of heads, because Zwickey Deltas have always worked so well for me. Guess they're my favorite. I've got a dozen Eskimos I haven't even opened up, maybe I'll try 'em some day.
-
I have had great luck with 125 magnus II 2 blade and the 125 bear razorheads with out bleeders.
-
zwickey black diamond delta.
you should not buy a broadhead that you cannot sharpen.
-
STOS
-
Just use a belt sander to change the bevel angle on the Eclipses tip. Sharpens them up real good to and only takes about 1 minute a head if that. I have killed most of my critters with the Zephyr Sausquatch. I have never had a problem shooting them far enough through a critter to kill them. Joseph
-
I don't shoot 2 blades very often....but I sure like the Ace Express 175s when I do.
Why?...cause they are big n mean....and I can get a wicked edge on em.
-
I've used the 160 Ribteks over the last several years with great success. These broadheads have really impressed me with their ease of sharpening, fly great, and they are flat out tough. Don't let the price fool you. I keep em sharp and never have issues with blood trails.
-
Like STOS for a 2 blade but if I want a blood trail I shoot a snuffer.
Hemet on head down!
couldn't resist :knothead:
