I am curious to know what you guys think is the fastest R/D bow you have ever shot? to keep it as simple as possible, lets keep it 62" or shorter and accommodate at least a 30" draw..
Haven't shot one, but the ACS bows are supposed to be as fast or faster than any recurve on the market. Just what I've read. I'm sure some of the guys on here have shot them. I believe the technology in the limbs is actually patented. Not a lot of new tech on the trad scene these days that's unique enough to qualify for a new patent. I will say that I just got my first RD longbow, a 47# Flatwoods Custom (disqualified cause it's 64"), and there's little noticeable difference between it and my mid 60s 53# Red Wing Hunter recurve.
Matt
I have several ACS longbows. Very fast, though I wouldn't recommend a 62-inch for a 30-inch draw. In an ACS, a 66-inch is a much better choice for a 30-inchn draw.
The only other 3-piece hybrid that I've found that shoots with an ACS is a Morrison Shawnee. Unfortunately, Bob isn't making Shawnee limbs right now.
A&H Acs is the one for sure. Larry makes a great bow and his newer limbs are amazing he is a genius. If you want a high performance longbow his is the one. Widow
Just recently chronoed my 62"A&H ACX 1 piece 59@28, I draw right at 28. 694gr arrow at 171FPS. For comparisons sake my 62# Schafer recurve shot the same arrow at 174Fp. Pretty impressive I thought.
It doesn't really matter because there are too many variables to consider. (e.g. arrow weight)
can't speak to a 30" draw, cause I only draw 27", but I've owned all the high end r/d's and the fastest I've owned is a bigfoot Sasquatch and the second fastest was a centaur triple carbon. But all the top end ones are within a couple fps of each other
I've shot an ACS and it did indeed seem faster than anything I've ever shot.
But quietness kills better than speed IMO
Never done any speed test but I promise you the Zipper Nitro is no slouch in the speed department.
In no particular order- Centaur, Dryad ACS, Habu, Border Raptor, Zipper, Morrison, Cari-bow, etc.
Of those the Centaur, Habu, Zipper and Dryad ACS are prolly the real smokers.
I think these are at the higher end of speed.Centaur,Cari-bow Peregrine,,Whippenstick with carbon back,Toelke's newer HS Whip has excellent speed,Matlock X-3,ACS and foam/carbon Morrison Dakota.
Their are many other superb performers. Those I listed just come to mind of the ones I have had that are hybrid style longbows with more radical limbs that smoked pretty good.
Fastest I've ever shot was a Bigfoot 1 piece Sasquatch Longbow.
Centaurs are the fastest I've shot.
My 62" ACS is the fastest I've shot.
Bigfoot Sasquatch, fast and well timed limbs. Kirk builds them draw length specific to maximize performance at your draw length.
Matlock X2 for me. I`ve found I shoot slower bows better. RC
In my testing it was the Whippenstick. Bill
I've owned a few and shot a bunch of the ones listed above. Most bows with a good reputation for being fast are fast on my chronograph.
Now the important thing for me is how they shoot with a hunting weight arrow, while setup for hunting. Some of the high speed bows give up quite a bit with heavy arrows, string silencers, and a strap on bow quiver.

Sounds good at 20-30 yards speed great; I like hear what people think of the sound or noise their road-running bows produce you cannot say noise is not a factor when hunting maybe not with a 380fps cross bow.
My Border Harrier my fastest bow but also the nosiest bow carbon limbs has a high tone type noise going try different custom strings see what can be done.My Border also my highest poundage bow so that plays in ,The Fastest bows always seem picky on broad heads and arrow spline so I am now drawn to smooth drawing and bows that shoot noiseless as they can be.The White Wolf Max P is a cool one check out with 10-20 pound adjustable range with the double set of limbs I am having one made now .Seem them at the range at 20 yards you only hear the arrow hitting the target that amazing,,,,,,,,they are very fast also,,,,,,
A pretty fast bow is an Omega. I have the Delta 3 piece. Easy on the pocketbook for a bow that performs as well as it does.
Habu vyperkahn w/ triple carbon lams was pretty quick. Did not chrono it but it shot the arrows for my 62@29 Widow recurve with good flight and the Habu was 54@28. The widow shoots the 640 grain arrow 190 through the chrono and I would bet $100 the Habu was not far behind.
ACS CX Is the fastest I own. Blacky Schwartz has a site where he tests bow speed and does write-ups. Pete (can't remember last name) does the same.
Without a chronograph, arrow weights, poundage, and draw length, it is just a guess/opinion.
"Seems pretty fast"
Wheels2, I agree that the naked eye can be fooled. I have chronographed my bows set up to hunt but have learned not to post numbers, there is always someone that will pick at the numbers and technique. Not worth it. Of all the hybrids I have owned the Bigfoot was the fastest and also very quiet and dead in hand. Yes it beat out my acs cx at very similar gpp. That being said bows from same maker, same poundage will usually shoot at different speeds.
Daniel, speed is one component of a high performance bow.
Bjorn, would that be Pete Ward.
The new dark matter I'm shooting is by far the fastest longbow I have ever shot, probably the fastest bow I've shot period. As far as noise goes it isn't any louder than my glass model.
This speed discussion is just opinion unless backed up by reliable chrono numbers. I suggest contacting Blacky Schwarz if you want accurate info.
my kenny M longbow, a true R/D longbow- and not a hybrid- (that i built, nothing fancy- yew limbs with an osage riser), shoots a hunting weight arrow- 11gpp at 170fps- 50# at my draw
my osage /yew /bamboo trilam wood bow( no glass!), built by my good friend "Roy from Pa" hes over on the bench- it shot 174 fps with the same 11gpp arrow, but i think it is a few pounds over the #50 mark- should put it on the scale- that guy builds an amazing trilam!! legendary!!!

I have a Shawnee that is 73# at my 30" draw length. I have chrono'd it a few different times with arrows that weigh 745grains and i average about 188 fps (using a chrono is a GREAT way to see how release effects speed).
Who makes the new dark matter bow?
I am starting see some new names come up here always good see new bow makers ,also seeing some self promotion here by 2 bow makers that seem to pat each other on the back to many times for me I stuck my one hand in that trap here NO-MORE,
Big Jim bows seem fast looking he a nice person to chat with he can hold his own with his Bow Models.

What do you mean?
I didn't see any self promotion here.
The dark matter is made by Jim Neaves of Centaur Archery
Centaur..That's right!
Thanks
Sorry did mean upset anyone here just posting what I see and read nice hear shooters of bows make nice comments when I hear bow maker toot their our horn that's just turns me off just Saying,,,,
I'm not upset at all.
Just saying I must've missed the self promotion.
No biggie.
all new Qarbon Nano QN2 from GrizzlyStik longbow any comments and users of this bow ,asking as we get so so much wet weather up here in Sitka Ak this bow would look me to hold up here.
oops hope that wasnt me- im am not a commercial maker of bows- just make my own- sorry if i was the one who offended- no offence or subliminal promotion intended.
just that i dont think you can buy a kenny m bow commercially- have to build them yourself :campfire:
Jeez fuji..didn't even cross my mind that it could be construed that way.
,,spent too much time on the bench I guess..lol
I think the only subliminal promotion was for me to get building with some yew...lol

Come on guys lighten up a little speed great but let talk speed, noise, arrow shootabity ,lets talk the arrows these bows like =wood, alum, carbon, the best string for that bow and brace height =chrono speed if possible be great too,
The BINGO winners are Steve=Eagle Wing and Big Foot bows love hearing the shooters of these bows say great things but please tell the whole story no bow is with Neg so that bow might be improved .I just got sick of hearing each owner of the above companies pat each other on the back that part goes to the people that buy a bow when a owner of company self pats that turns me off like bragging, Plus give the other sponsors a fair shake ....
I like here why people say Black Widow bows are so nice and hold there own on speed ,just confused on the different models of recurves they make ,longbow look nice I like go to their shooting class that sounds cool.......How do they hold up in wet weather,,,,,,
My border a nice bow ,fast ,not picky with arrows ,noise level average but has carbon in limbs has that higher pitched noise but not bad going look for a string sponsor here and work on the noise tone and deepen the sound to a dull sound. But Border never sent any information with harrier that bow like adjusting brace height ,best arrows to try things like that ,a big turn off to me it was like bye bye after you paid for his bow. ,Brooks TD bow now that a nice bow just to pretty for me up here in AK best grip I ever had ,shoots great he put a very nice hand written letter in bow box how tune and other great tips he a nice person his wife helps out on the emails,
Eagle Wing longbow Frontier the best bow I ever had for being so easy to string without a stringer, dead pop corn fart noise free ,draws like cotton candy on a stick smooth ,,shoots heavy arrows and not picky with broad heads,he needs to post his phone contact on his web site and is a little slow sometimes with emails ,,
Op did not ask about all the things you mentioned bowheadhunter. "I am curious to know what you guys think is the fastest R/D bow you have ever shot? to keep it as simple as possible, lets keep it 62" or shorter and accommodate at least a 30" draw.."
Hope you feel better now.
border harrier for me
I have a Dryad Epic 17 inch riser with extra long Dryad LBX 47 pound limbs that really zips arrows. Best longbow that I have shot--shoots far better than I do. Cheers, Brian

Not sure what a fast bow looks like but Big Jim's is not one of them. They are great stable bows but I would not classify them as very fast. My hunting partner uses one and I have shot several.
cool reason I sold the herd off need a stable bow up here only one I have soon will be White Wolf Max P longbow ,,speed no good up here if the bow not Alaskan tuff and stable,,
I shot my Omega original 62" 45lb @ 28" today through a chronograph. I am shooting 473gr carbon arrows for 10.5gpp and 5 shots through the chronograph averaged 165fps. In all fairness I am not pulling all 28" more like 27.5".
In other news, my Samick Sage recurve 50lbs shooting a 604gr aluminum arrow for 12gpp averaged 142fps.
53# border getting 489gr arrow 191fps
Zipper Nitro 63#@29 750gr arrow 193 fps
Zipper Nitro 66#@29 750gr arrow 197 fps
ACS 45# @ 31" shooting 9 grains per pound was 195 average of 10 shots the other day.
I got the ACS because I want the most performance I can get and I have not found anything better.
A&H and Centaur are the fastest longbows Ive shot/owned. I can shoot my A&H better than my Centaur for some reason. I wish I had more handle mass in my Centaur. That would for sure help me out a lot. I have had both a A&H 1 piece, and the 3 piece. Shot the 3 piece great 1 day...aweful the next. The 1 piece is killer though. Love that thing.. rat'
Fastest one I've shot is my Zipper Nitro. Recurve like speeds.
TJ and Ryan know a thing or two about a thing or two! This thread topic always blurs the line of subjective and objective, and as such, I tend not to follow them.
Stay the course and figure it out. As soon as you find that "fastest bow" you will settle on a bow that's 20FPS slower that just blows your mind... That's why we refer to our bow's as she's. No offense ladies!

That's actually pretty good. Anything at 170 fps and above is pretty decent with 10 grains per pound and 28" finger release. Some of the fastest bows can exceed 180 fps @ 28" but with a shooting machine. Not with finger release.
IMHO speed is over rated shooting trad equipment. I shoot better with a bow with the right grip for me in the 175fps range. But if we're concerned about speed the fastest bow if ever owned and put through a crony was a 64" A&H ACS CX, 50@30. It consistently shot a 8.7gr per pound arrow at 200fps.
Bob Lee longbows were do they fall in the speed of fastest longbows,

some light arrows wow that has to damage limbs in the long run just to get a good speed ,,how noisy is that bow with light arrows,
I own a bow from both Kirk and Steve, two of the most professional bowyers I have ever bought from. Not sure about your comments, would you prefer bowyers trash each others work? I know that anyone who posts any type of question about " fastest" sends most people on this forum into spasms, but, it is a legimate question, especially if you going to drop between 800-1200 USD for a new bow.
Mad dog priarie predator 60" 41@28 shot a 420 grain arrow 185fps.
That's right at 28" my draw.
A guy I used to shoot with had a longbow he once chronied at 232 fps...but that was with 6gpp.
I personally have never shot a bow through a chronograph as a means of deciding whether to buy it or not.
another vote for the whippenstick!
checkout the walk the talk bow testing results and u willbe impressed
I would say some of the fastest models of D/R longbows being made today are Bigfoot Sasquatches, Eaglewings, A&H's, Centaurs, and probably a few other I am not thinking of at the moment. But, keep in mind speed is not everything and realisticly how much difference is 10 or even a 20 fps difference in arrow speed going to make with a bow if the animal you're shooting at is already slightly tense or even relaxed when any deer can clearly duck out of the way of the fastest of compounds that shoot in excess of 300 fps. Please don't think I am trashing the fast bows at all if anything I like them! My Black Widow PLx is not quite up there with some of the above mentioned bows but it is no slouch in the speed department either I am shooting a 620 grain arrow off a 60# bow at 27" draw in the neighborhood of 175 fps when I have chronoed it. Just keep in mind that the fastest bows out there are great bows and are made by some excellent bowyers but they may not fit you personally. The number one reason I bought my Widow is because it fits me perfectly and I love the guys that work at Black Widow.
The important question is... Which bow is most EFFICIENT not the fastest. In my opinion there is a difference between the two.
Fastest longbow can and will be debated for ever. From my experience, fast bows will sacrifice something in design and more stable bows will do the same in speed. Again, this is from ''my'' experience.
The Centaur carbon bow has been the fastest w/ and original Adcock being 1 or 2 clicks behind.

I love your answer mike g. That is about the truth.
