Title: 2 sets of beaver balls...overkill???
Post by: aim small...release on August 14, 2015, 11:32:00 PM
How many sets if string silencers do you all have on your longbows.  I feel like 2 sets got the bow where I want it but is it to.much on the string?

My R/D's each have 1 set of yarn puffs, my bamabow/hill style has always had a pair of beaver balls on it, but right now has none, and I can't tell a difference.

I wouldn't be afraid to use 2 small sets of yarn puffs or whiskers, but 2 sets of beaver balls has got to slow you down considerably.

I've tried it and thought it was overkill...probably looses some major fps

What kind of bow is it specifically?  You shouldn't need that much on a longbow with no string contact.  Some hybrids can be a bit louder, but it just takes time to find the sweet spot.  The 1/4 points are not the end all be all, just the average point of effectiveness.  Some bows do better with silencers at 1/5s or even staggered with top at 1/4 bottom at 1/3 etc.  If you're gonna do double silencers I would make sure they're each no bigger than a golf ball or smaller.

You should try the bow hush in the banner above. I have a bear supermag 48 that would not quiet until I used the recurve kit from bow hush. Silence now and I imagine it will work the same on longbows. 2 sets of beaver balls is not needed.

Figure roughly 1-3 fps for each item added to your string. A brass point, serving, and most silencer types. Beaver may be heavier as the skin is thick. Not only do they add physical weight but they also add drag.

It's not overkill if it works.........

Within reason, do what makes YOU feel good about it.  It may slow it down a tad. .  ooops.

Sharp broadhead, in the right spot = dead deer.

I have always taken one wool puff and split it into two for one bow. It works great and one package is enough for two strings. After they are broken in on the string, I usually trim them slightly as well. I have not noticed any difference, they are just better to look at IMO. I've done this with my ACS longbow and past BW recurves.

One set should do it. If more is needed it is a tuning 'opportunity'. Arrow too light, brace height is not optimal, silencers placed wrong, string nock too low, etc.

One set should work. If a bow is properly tuned and shooting the correct spine arrow and needs more to make it quiet, I would suspect the design is not particularly effective.

My Hill bows are pretty quiet naturally, but I do use a set of silencers on them.

If you are happier with two sets, I would go for it.
I do what I feel is right for me and my set up.

If it is quiet like you want it then leave it alone.  If you feel like you have the time, patience and/or resources and want to see if you can achieve the same present result with one set of silencers then go for it.

One set would be fine.  I have used 2 sets of small wool yarn puffs on my recurves with great success.  Beaver balls are to big and weigh the string down in my opinion. But if it works for you go for for it.

Me personally, I don't like the look of multiple silencers and/or limb savers etc.   I feel any well designed bow tuned with the proper arrows shouldn't need more than one set of silencers.

Just my opinion
