Title: Largest inexpensive target bag out there?
Post by: Gdpolk on August 01, 2015, 06:09:00 PM
Funds are tight but I need a bag target for the garage. I plan to fill it with worn out clothing/linens and Walmart bags. I have enough plastic bags for now but will use cloth as I gather enough from wearing out clothing. Right now I'm using a dog food bag but I'm looking for something with more surface area so the wife feels better about learning to shoot at it without fear of hitting our wall.

Burlap bags.  I pay $2 each for them.   Try coffee shops, farm supply stores, etc.  If you are just trying to have a safety factor, get some carpet and hang it behind your bag.

Rural King sells 50# bags of corn in woven plastic bags. Give the wet does a treat and have a bag too!

The only problem I found with the woven plastic bags is they are sensitive to UV and begin to break down pretty quickly. Other than that they work great.

I'm going to see about picking up some old carpet somewhere and building a 48x48x12" carpet target with a DIY range blank from 3 hands up front. That should be able to be done for fairly cheap and would be pretty awesome for form training and inspiring confidence with new shooters.  Thanks for steering me in a good direction.

I tried the third hand bags and are ok for compound shooters that can use the edges.  But if you hammer the center they wear out pretty fast.  I blew try 2 in under a year.  Im still searching for a good bag.  I recently bought some burlap bags.

Find a Stein soy bean dealer, those seed crates are tough nylon, tougher and more durable than comercial targets and four foot cubes.  Stuffed with farmers used silage plastic, they are free and last for many thousands of shots.  The silage plastic is easily reusable.  I have a life time supply up in my garage rafters.

Ditto burlap bags. Been using on for about a year now. When it gets a hole worn in the center I just put the whole thing in another bag with a few extra grocery sacks and it's good to go.

Here is a coffee bag stuffed with polyester from a shot up commercial bag target. I have made a bunch of similar targets and stuffed them with plastic sheeting. I use long bungie cords to hold the bag in the frame and keep it stretched tight.
