So I'm in the process of ordering a bow, and my first choice was cocobolo riser with bocote Limbs, but the bowyer is allergic to cocobolo. He has some nice myrtle veneers, so I decided if really like to do myrtle limbs with curly Koa riser, since Koa and Hawaii in general has some personal meaning to me.
Trouble is, neither of us can find good figured Koa that is thick enough to use for a riser. Seems all the good stuff is cut into veneers or 1" pieces for instruments.
So, anyways, does anyone have any tips for a Koa source? Thanks.
If not, gotta think of a third option... :/
Get ahold of Curt at the wood vault. He is a sponsor here. He has more than what is listed on his site so give him a call. I got a really nice piece of koa from him a year ago.
I picked up some while on vacation in Hawaii. Google "the koa store" on Kauai.
Curt would be a good choice. I've gotten veneers from him in the past. Big Jim also sells riser blocks.
Thanks guys, he has sime beautiful stuff on his site. I'm amazed!
The Koa store's online store is down, I'll have to try to give them a call. Thanks.
I got Koa veneers from Big Jim last year and I think I remember him saying they came from 2" stock. Give him a call and see what he has.
I'd second giving Big Jim a call.
He has or can get wood that isn't on his site.
Koa looks good in a riser, however I do not believe it should be used as the only wood in the riser, might not be strong enough, at least that is what Dave Windauer thinks. He made me a Schafer with figured koa flare and it is beautiful with the macasser ebony outside the flare. Koa can be found that is large enough for use in a riser.

I have a half pallet of Koa on hand just can't get time to post this stuff to my site.
I've got big plans for my Web site and wood supply this year....I believe me, hope you guys do too. :)
Guess I should have checked my thread before emailing you Jim. Can't wait to talk about what you have.
