Title: Enough bow? Lightning bugs out of the air.
Post by: Tedd on June 22, 2015, 09:21:00 PM
What a challenge. Shooting at lightning bugs out of the air as the come out of the grass. My daughter used her K Mag 35lb@28" to down one. Penetration seem excellent!

Ha. You sure that is enough weight?

No matter as long as the broadheads are scary sharp and delivered to a good spot.

Sounds like you were having fun with your daughter. Good stuff!

Haha! That sounds like fun. I have shot at grasshopers before, but never lightning bugs.

Great idea!  Might be an interesting way to practice for an after dark hog hunt.

I've shot lightning bugs with a BB pistol before, but never a bow.  Gotta try this.

We shoot at them when they are just 1 or 2 feet off the ground so the arrow goes safely into the ground. You need enough light to see them flying after their flash goes out.
The best one have a blinker that glows for a while after they flash, those are easy to see.
My daughter could see them when they weren't flashing or glowing. 19 yr old eyes are better than 50 yr old eyes.

That's a new one on me. Never even considered shooting them. Must lose a lot of arras, no?

As long as you use EFOC arrows you should be ok.  :)
Sounds like fun

I've hunted bugs with Judo's in summer time for years.  It's great fun.

I had a game warden stop me in a WMA once when my wallet was in the truck.  He asked me if I was hunting, and I told him I was only stump shooting and shooting at dragonflies.  He looked suspicious so I asked him if he would like to give it a try.  He pointed to one about 14-16yds out and said to nail it if I could, otherwise I was getting a ticket.  What do you know, I hit it (most of the time, even if the aim is spot on, they levitate to let the arrow fly under them).  He laughed and took a few shots himself, then became one of those that trusted me and just chatted with me when he saw me.

After you get a few, attach the glowing tails below the nock throat ,for a primitive lighted nock!   :bigsmyl:
