Title: What to do? Help!
Post by: mooseman76 on October 09, 2007, 09:16:00 PM
I am going to begin saving for a hunt, probably 2009.  I'm torn between a Quebec Caribou hunt or a New Foundland Moose hunt.  These are the top two on my list and don't really have the desire to do anything else right now.  What are your experiences with either of these hunts?  Help me please!...lol

the trouble with a Quebec caribou hunt is the animlas are migratory and might not be there when you are. If they are you'll see a bunch, if their not I hope you like fishing.

Heck I don't know what I want to do next week.  You're asking about 2009?        I would just save the money and see what you want to do by this time next year.

My son wanted to be a coal car when he grew up (that was when he was two).  He is not a coal car, so you see everyone changes there mind.

I hear ya George, but I don't have the cash to just do stuff on the spot.  I'm trying to do some early planning before the big sport's show in Harrisburg.  Keep em coming.

I agree with Mickey. I too contemplated the same thing back in 2000. My father and I opted for the Quebec caribou. Not bowhunting in our case, it was gun hunting. Anyway, we were part of the 2% that didn't get caribou. Not only didn't we get one...we didn't see ANY. Just like Mickey said, if they're there, there are lots of 'em, if they're not there...well, we did do alot of lake trout fishing and man was it good! Had a great time anyway, but would've been so much better if the boo were there. Worst part is my dad is too old to do another trip with now, so that was MY once in a lifetime trip with him. Still well worth it. I heard the group that came in behind us limited out on 2 bulls each in the first 3 days they were there. Aaarrrrrgggghhhhh!!

My advise...pick the animal that you want more and don't look back. Do the research and find the outfitter that'll give you the best chance at the best time of year and go for it!!

Good luck in whichever you decide and show the pics when you get 'em!!

I would consider Newfoundland for caribou as well. They are Woodland Caribou smaller than the Quebec Labrador specie. If you do your home work you should beable to do a moose/caribou combo in Newfoundland for same price as a good Quebec Caribou hunt. Remember the best caribou hunts in Quebec are outfitted out of the far North - Fort Chimo area (Search Arctic Adventures or Leaf River Outfitters) not out of Schefferville or LG4. These hunts are more expensive but less migratory issues. If caribou is your preference then also consider NWT or Yukon for Mountain caribou.

Any recommendations for a moose/caribou hunt in Newfoundland?  Feel free to PM me if you want.  Thanks.

Mike

My dad and I went to Newfoundland a few years ago and had a trip of a lifetime. We went to Newfoundland because you do not have to deal with the migration issue. I took a bou with my bow and my dad took his with a muzzleloader. Contact Tony Tuck at Grey River Lodge. He runs a top notch outfit and I can't speak highly enough of the services he provides.  www.greyltd.com/ (http://www.greyltd.com/)

I would love to go back sometime for a moose hunt.
