I've decided I am going to order a new Toelke Pika. For those curious, I'm thinking 56" and 52@28 (I draw 28).
Dan knows I want a dark and heavy mass riser and I think we've agreed on macassar ebony (I want a very dark piece).
Originally, I wanted brown glass limbs so I could save $100. Black glass would cost the same. However, for the right veneers I might spring for it. Maybe something like a figured zebrawood or black limba.
What does tradgang think? Brown glass, black glass, an exotic veneer? Or perhaps a mix of both...like black glass on the back and something pretty on the belly?
Let me know what you think :)
I don't mind the brown glass, but for $100 more I'd probably spring for nice veneers.
Don't be bashful, Brad. Which veneers?
I much prefer clear glass over the limb wood or veneer; not necessarily any thing exotic. My last bow had stained ash veneers that were beautiful, to my eye. I prefer to see the wood than cover it up.
It's easy to spend your money! Lol
I've seen a lot of nice mango coming out of The shop recently so would lean that way. Mostly ive told Dan to use the best stuff he gots around and I haven't been disappointed yet.
I have a Lynx recurve with a cocobolo/micarta riser with black glass limbs (had a set of juniper/clear glass limbs that I sold) and just recently ordered a 2 piece TD Chinook with cocobolo/micarta riser and black glass limbs.
Personally, I love my black glass limbs. Especially with the finish that Dan and Jared use, it gives them a very nice matte finish.
If I was ordering a new Pika today (which I may in the near future), it will be a 2 piece TD with probably cocobolo/micarta riser and definitely black glass limbs.
I feel so predictable!! :saywhat:
Eastern red cedar, juniper, osage or myrtle would all work nicely with the macassar.
See what Dan has in spalted maple.
Phenolic 2 piece with mango veneers
Macassar is probably my favorite riser wood, so good call there.
I have an all macassar dwyer that's gorgeous, but those dark veneers really show any imperfections in the glass. If someone could guarantee clear, streak free glass, then I'd say go all macassar. Unfortunately you don't know for sure, so then I'd go with something a touch lighter. I'm fond of gnarly myrtle which matches dark risers of macassar or ziricote really well.

X2 on the Myrtle, the nastier the better.
Well, I ended up placing an order. I've had a lot of myrtle Whips and though they were pretty I wanted something different just because.
I went with the darkest Macassar Ebony Dan could find and the darkest, most figured Black Limba veneers he could find.
Here are 2 of my favorites. Classic whip real dark Macassar with yew limbs. Classic chinook zircote riser with bocote limbs.

Why don't you get some green glass from OMC bowyer supply and have Dan use that. It's a real nice darker green
