As some of you may know I attended the Traditional Archery Society Nationals last weekend in Mississippi.
It was a great time and I got to meet a lot of guys I only knew on line. One in particular was our own Big Jim.
I went over to his tent to see his wares and to introduce my self. I can tell you he had a very nice layout. If you want it and Jim doesn't have it, you probably don't need it.
I had a few concerns about his takedown system that I had used on one of my longbows. I believe he got me straightened out and I'm ready to try again.
For those who've done business with Jim I don't have to tell you what an engaging and friendly guy he is. If you haven't done business with him, you should.
On Saturday Jim and I teamed up to shoot the broadhead round. It was my first broadhead shoot and I had a blast...even though Jim cleaned my clock.
He was using his signature 1 1/2" three blade broadheads while I was shooting Howard Hill heads.
Since "line cutters" counted for the next higher score I think he had the advantage.
At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;)
Anyway here's a tip of the hunting hat and a shout out to a new friend and great guy.
:wavey:
Charlie : It is a great pleasure for me to call him a friend .Drew
I've never had the pleasure to meet Big Jim, but I just received some arrows from him and they are great!
Hopefully he'll be at Cloverdale this coming weekend and I'll get to chat with him again.
:archer:
I've only had cyber conversation with him on bows and Rinehart targets. Great man to do business with and would love to shake his hand some day.
I have met and chatted with him at our trad fest the last couple years. Jim is a super guy!
I've bought a couple Bear bows from him in the past and will likely do it again.
By the way, shooting a round with two fine ambassadors for our sport like Charlie and Big Jim would have made my day.
Where in Mississippi was the event held?
I've ordered a few dozen shafts from him and one of those cool seats that lean up against the tree. Talked to him once because he wanted to make sure I got the correct shafts. Jim seems like a great guy and I would love to meet him if he ventures west.
Charlie, I have had the pleasure to meet both you and Jim. Your sentiments about him are spot on but I have to say It takes one to know one.
You are also a Man I love to chew the fat and hunt with. I haven't had a chance to hunt with Jim yet but I would share a campfire with either of you any time.
Yeah I've got three of his bows, and another on order. I've talked to him a number of times on the phone, and have always enjoyed it.
I would like to meet him one day in person.
Big Jim is a great bowyer, a great hunter, a great shooter and above all a great friend

My only deflect/reflex bow was made by Jim. A great bow!
You cant find a nicer guy as BigJim. Helped me out more than he knows. Answered all my questions and set me straight several times. I get 99% of traditional equipment from him. I order stuff from him but I would rather buy from him in person. Not to mention his craftsmanship on his bows not only are the beautiful but they very accurate.
I think both of you guys are pretty good folks!
It was nice seeing you again, Charlie!

I rode down to see Big Jim a few weeks ago to get a bow for my wife. She is new to shooting so I brought her along to make sure the bow I had in mind would fit what she needed in draw weight, size, etc. Big Jim took the whole afternoon showing us around and taking his valuable time to make sure all her questions were answered and the bow was tuned and set up properly. I learned a lot too! Great guy and a wealth of knowledge! I was so impressed I just had to buy another bow before I left LOL. I have not seen customer service like that since I was a kid in the sixties and they delivered groceries for free! He will defiantly be getting my business in the future!
Jim is a great guy, and he knows a WHOLE LOT about archery.
At our state shoot earlier this year I shot a round with Jim and was introduced to his sense of humor. After a lousy shot, I said to myself out loud, "McMichael, sometimes you are a dumba$$." With his sometimes dry wit, he looked at me and said, "I've been in business a long time and have always found it is best not to disagree with the customer". He is a good guy to be around.
I've done business with the big fella several times. We've traded bows and quivers, and I've bought arrows, points, shirts, etc. from him as well via mail order and in person too. He's very fast with mail order stuff, including arrows, I might add.
You just can't beat Big Jim.
Possum Head... the shoot was at Ackerman, Miss. The Choctaw National Forest. Very nice location.
Hey Jerry (Bisch) good to see you again as well. Had to use your first name just to prove to myself I could remember it. LOL

Haha!!!! Most folks don't even know I have a first name!
Bisch
Bisch, you mean to tell me that Bisch isn't your first name?
:)
Sure wish you would have came to the Howard hill shoot. It was a fun shoot.
Charlie,
You might remember me, but I did come up and introduce myself. I know you only met 1 or 2 people at the shoot though!!

AWESOME. LOL Looking forward to someday meeting Jim myself. Sounds like a great person. Much like everyone on here. BTW Missed ya today Sam.
Daniel.... I do remember meeting and talking with you over the weekend. I can't say that I remembered your handle here but I will now. I enjoyed the visit buddy.
Jim is at Denton Hill every year running around serving customers but had some time to chat with him on several occasions. I also mail order archery equipment from him. Jim is a great person and has a great team of people helping with his business.
Ron
Charlie,
Like yourself, Jim and Barb are the real deal, fine folks that are always a pleasure to be around. When you walking into a tent expecting to find a BIG JIM he delivers Eh, you had no trouble finding him!!!
No problem finding him at all. :)

Yep, Look for the source of the giant shadow. :biglaugh:
How did he get the nick name Big Jim?
He's a stout fellar!
Yep. Ole Jim. When they made him they broke the mold. And then they beat the hell out of the mold maker.

I wish I had known about it, I would have gone! I've never heard of it. Where was this held? :dunno:
I just googled it, and found out you guys were in Choctaw county, which is only two counties from me! Basically in my back yard!
I'm amazed that something like that was held and I never even heard of it!
Tall Paul... I think there were a lot of people that didn't hear about the TAS gathering. It's a shame you missed it since it was so close. A great time was had by all.
Will this shoot always be at that location or will it travel around?
You just cant beat Big Jim, He has anything you need, filled a void when Lone Wolf, and three Rivers quit attending shoots, and is more knowledgeable and helpful anyway. Always look for his arrival at KyTradFest.
Just saw Jim @ Cloverdale.Lots of shooters (//%5Burl=http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/jimavelis/media/IMG_1139.jpg.html%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee458/jimavelis/IMG_1139.jpg) [/IMG]
I was at Cloverdale yesterday and was paying for a few items at Big Jim's booth. His phone activated and the ring tone was a hog squealing.... heheheee
yep
