Title: Trying this again
Post by: talkingcabbage on June 07, 2015, 06:52:00 AM
A buddy and I want to hunt (and kill) a hog or few this fall/winter.  We wouldn't mind a semi-guided hunt, but could do diy hunt if someone just told us which area to try, or had private land to hunt on.  So the question I have is, does anyone want to help a couple Iowa boys kill some hogs?  I would be strictly trad, but my buddy shoots wheelie bows.  I'd like to find a place where we could primitive camp and hunt, and within 7-8 hours of southern Iowa would be preferred.   I know there's guys out there that know of spots where hogs are plentiful, and I'm not asking to hunt your "secret" spot, but we are very respectful and responsible with land and animals.  I appreciate any and all help.  Thanks.

Respectful request on your part, and wish I could help you out.

There's got to be someone who knows someone.   :dunno:

Look at states within that drive distance you have established. Contact those state's divisions of natural resources, wildlife and fisheries etc..., ask to be directed to a wildlife biologist for information on hog hunting. You won't find anyone who knows more about hog numbers and public land.

Jim, I tried that with a couple states.  Missouri discourages hunting hogs to such an extent that they will not give ANY info on anything related to hog hunting.  Illinois is pretty much the same.  Haven't tried OK yet, but probably will.  I've looked at maps and found a few good looking places, but I'd really like someone locally to point to a specific plot of land or section of a WMA or something similar.  Actually, if anyone is going hog hunting and wouldn't mind a couple tag-a-longs, that would be better yet!  lol.

I wish I could help, no hogs in Indiana (least where I live) I hunted in SC and TN for hogs, plenty of opportunity there if you don't mind the drive.

Might check out Fort Riley Ks. I know they did have a problem with hogs a while back but don't know if thats still the case?

Thanks guys.  I've got a lead I'm following up on.  So, what time of year is the best?  I'm guessing around fall/winter like just about every other game animal.  Probably also better for the bugs?  Just thinking out loud, I guess.

The Fort riley hogs were eliminated quite a while ago and Kansas pretty well put the kabash on hunting them due to people bring them in and turning them loose with hopes of being "guides". A law has been passed making it difficult to hunt them here unless you are a landowner and get a permit.
