Quick question....
I have family arriving any minute, but I have to ask before I lose the thought...
For those of you who external foot your Gold Tips with the long 50gr aluminum or 100gr brass inserts, is it better to go past the depth of the insert for strength or is it okay to go just short of the back of the insert?
How far into the shafts do the long 50gr aluminum inserts and the 100gr brass inserts go?
I am thinking of going with a 1/4" footing at the nock and 3/4" footing behind the point to get more footings per aluminum shaft that I'll be cutting, but if the general consensus is that I have to go to at least 1.5", I'll do it.

I never went with more then a 1" foot.I don't feel it is necessary to go longer.The footing in my opinion is to keep the open end where the insert goes from spliting
I have done 1" and 2" footings. Do not see any real advantage so far with longer foot.

Thanks guys... This is where I'm leaning too and think maybe even 3/4" is plenty for end split protection, but just want to make sure there isn't a huge strength advantage to run the footing past the depth of the insert.
I have only footed the kinetics, I used one inch which actually only foots a half inch of the shaft itself because the insert/outserts for the kinetics sticks out a half inch from the end of the shaft and they are almost completely bullet proof! But that shaft has a pretty thick wall so I don't know how big of a part of the bullet proof equation it is! I used JB Weld on the footings and wish I had used it on the inserts also as I have completely blown out the footing and insert together but the shaft was fine and I just used JB Weld then and put it back together! I also used a quarter inch on the nock end like you planned and it seems to be working! One thing I have noticed with the GT traditional and black standard diameter arrows and the 100gr inserts I don't mushroom very many arrows, I think it's because the 100gr inserts are so long and thus have such a good grip length, BUT they do bend which can rupture the shaft wall so longer might be better! So with that last statement I'll quit being help and no help! ;-)
I made the mistake of making them the same length as the bass insert on some nice Vforce shafts and the arrows snapped off clean right behind the footing.
I went to 1" after that and i'm real happy now... I use "Bohning Insert Iron" with good luck, but JB weld is bad to the bone too.
I use a footing that is a little longer than the longest insert that will be used. This way there is no change in the flexible portion of the shaft with different inserts. I shoot 350gr upfront, either 100gr insert plus 250gr point or 50gr insert and 300gr point. With the longer footing there is no difference in tuning like there might be with a short footing where the difference in insert lengths changes the length of flexilble portion of the arrow shaft.
Good point Ozy on the longer foot to give some flexibility on what insert head combination you use.
I use at least 3-4 inch external footings. Sometimes up to six inches. It has great advantages based on your objectives. There is definitely a difference in shaft durability with the longer footing versus a 1 inch footing.
