I have a build for a Big Jim Buffalo coming up in September. I am looking at wood combinations every chance I get and have several ideas of what I might go with. Just looking for some more eye candy and to see what other possibly options I can fantasize about!
So...What are some of your favorite combinations for bow woods???
Pics welcome
Macassar ebony and cocobolo.

i really like 3 different woods.
1. zebra wood cut opposite of the usual. I think zebra looks way better cut to where you try to cur down the same growth ring(i hope that made sense).
2. Bocote - I just love it.
3. Blk and white ebony.
I knew Danny would chime in on this one. Danny has to have the prettiest stable of sticks on Tradgang. Love that No.9, just a gorgeous bow.
All that aside, i love bacote and the calssc combination of yew/cocobolo.
Big fan of Osage, it goes with lots of things. Like Shedua, Ebony, Cocobolo, Zebra wood, walnut and a host of others.
Osage and Purpleheart!
Osage, olive ash, yew, olive wood...... And zebrawood ;)
Zebrawood, Juniper, Russian Olive
Bacote and ebony.
Black and white ebony and Black and white ebony and Black and white ebony.......
I like dark brown bows...Ziricote and Macassar Ebony are my favorite. Mixed or just one of either with one a litter tone than the other.
Cocobolo and Yew
I like Macassar and bocote (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/quarteraway/image.jpg3_zpsyke3xwn6.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/quarteraway/media/image.jpg3_zpsyke3xwn6.jpg.html)
That being said my next bow is going to be a Javaman Elkheart with ziricote and myrtle.
Tell Big Jim to surprise you. I did that once with a bowyer and was very happy with the outcome. Unless your set on certain wood combos.
Osage is my favorite lighter wood. Really like how it darkens with age. And it is the Bois D'Arc so how can you go wrong?!
AJ
Another bocote fan here... my next one will be cocobolo and bocote with bocote limb veneers.
No "right" answer here except for what is right for you. Lots of beautiful woods out there.
I will be anxious to see what you choose.
Good luck!
"Buy American" - I would choose native North American woods as a tribute to this wonderful place that we call home; because I believe in the men and women that work in American mills and manage family wood lots; and because they are beautiful.
Good KOa and Maccassar is really hard to beat Or Good Koa and Black Phenolic , Or good KOA and super fancy myrtlewood.

Yes it is Sir...... I love the look of a pretty piece of Osage ;)

God bless, Steve
I've always been partial to cocobolo, and the ebonies, and Myrtle, and walnut, and burls, and, and, and ... Maybe that's why I have so many bows! Not because I need another one to shoot, I just like looking at them. Lol. Too hard to choose just one.
Well, I have every wood mentioned in this post currently in my shop in quantity.
I am partial to a lot so when people ask what my favorite is, I usually say I don't really have one...but apparently it must be black and white ebony as I have four bows of my own (I can't stop selling my personal bows or I would have a hundred) and three of the four are black and white.
Having said that, I usually go with a brown or all black with accents in the riser.
I do have a mound of beautiful Koa and Macassar too. I probably have a couple hundred bd feet of bocote as well.
Good luck as choosing the wood combo's seems to be the hardest, BigJIm
My Tastes are the same as Phoenix archers. I live dark Browns and subtle contrasts.
I also am like Big Jim in the fact that I can appreciate any nice wood.
I really love Osage with cocobolo. If I had to pick a second, I'd pick the combo of tiger myrtle and claro walnut. Honestly anything with claro walnut usually turns out insanely awesome.
Phenolic also looks great with any other wood, creates a great light and dark contrast and adds a lot of weight.
Danny wow!!!! I love that Gabon/b/w ebony bow - hummmm do I really need another bow - I'm thinking yes:)
I've had two Abbott's with cocobolo riser and yew limbs. Very nice.
I really like Bacote and Osage together. Saw some really nice Sasafrass in a bow once.
My last custom was not made by Jim but I did get my wood from him. Its a combo I have wanted for a long, long time. Macasar ebony riser and koa limb veneers. I love the result. I'll post some pics when I get back to my home computer.

So many to pick from, but I like Myrtle and Rosewood. Also like Ebony with Gray Maple or Cocobolo.
I like cocobolo and macassar ebony for risers, but not together, and myrtle for limb veneers
