Good afternoon Ladies and Gents,
I am returning back to the San Diego area in the fall and I am trying to find a certified instructor to guide me in learning with a recurve. I am having a hard time online finding one in the area. I have contacted Performance archery and Bow N Arrow shop, with only a response from Bow N Arrow shop. I was told to call the shop but where I am at, calling back to the US is not an option for me. I was not able to get the instructors name from Bow n Arrow shop so I am trying one on here. On to what I am looking for.
Basically looking for a an instructor that is reasonably priced and would be able to take me from step 1. ( teach me to set up/tune a recurve, form, picking a shooting style, and improving me into a better archer) It would be for 3d archery, maybe compete if i were to reach that level as i love competitions, and lastly for hunting. The whole reason Trad archery is important to me is because I would like to try and take a deer with my bear recurve like my grand dad did back in the ole days. He taught me what I know about chasing mid west whitetails.
If anyone knows of a certified instructor/mentor please pm me. Im not at all new to the archery game but very new to recurves. So id like to learn the correct way and not set myself up for failure. Thanks Gentleman, Ladies as well.
Equipment: As of now I have a 45# super kodiak 60". I am not planning to use the Super K for learning. I am most likely buying a Sage Journey with 30lb limbs to start with as many people recommend that. I do not have a tab or gloves, as I have not decided which route to go yet.
There is a instructor in north San Diego county named Rho Densmore. Her school is called "The Second Arrow" and can be found online...Good Luck.
You might wish to post this in the Shooters Forum on this site. Also if you go to the USA Archery web site you can find instructors by location and level.
You should call Performance Archery again I know they offer lessons. Ask for Gayla she should be able to help you. As for the Bow and Arrow Shop they are super to deal with but I dont know if they can help with lessons, Bruce the owner has just recently developed the trad bug and is now selling trad bows more than ever.
Until you land back in CA, you might look in the Classifieds, and online for a DVD. G. Fred Asbell is a sponsor and may be able to help, with a DVD he makes. There are other sponsors that have instructional DVD and books. Classifieds are always a good route if you know what your looking for. The sponsors are in the drop-down top center in this forum.
Gayla will teach you true target archery form. If you want to hit something more than 15 yards away, skip the Asbell theory. Feel free to PM me when you get to San Diego.
X2 for Gayla, I have known her for 35+ years. Knows her stuff. I would wait till you have her show you in person before reading books. Books and DVD's are OK but we are not the guys in those books or DVD's. A personal instructor can see your strengths and weakness and help you correct what needs to be corrected. I wish I had been able to have a personal instructor when I started.
Give me a ring. Pm me for my #
Mark would be a great source! Welcome back!

Same goes for all the other CA guys. It would be great to get something going in San Diego.
Also there is some great bowfishing for carp pretty close.
