Title: Working on some new turkey arrows.
Post by: Seth Stevens on April 29, 2015, 09:39:00 AM
I've been working on some new arrows for turkey season, which opens Sunday. This was my first run at this combo. Pretty happy with the finished product.   (http://i1349.photobucket.com/albums/p753/sethstevens/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04/F0CE3069-D206-49BB-918F-5BE291BB718D_zpsb047jlef.jpg) (http://s1349.photobucket.com/user/sethstevens/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04/F0CE3069-D206-49BB-918F-5BE291BB718D_zpsb047jlef.jpg.html)

Are you shooting from inside a blind ?  Those arrows look great, but birds see colors.

I will be in a blind and also use a fletching cover.

This brings up a question. I took my bird this year with a firearm but I am going to begin the quest of taking one with a recurve starting next year. (out of a blind) What makes a good traditional turkey arrow? Or should I just use my deer arrows (486gr, 150gr upfront) and press on?

I wouldn't change arrows. the only thing that I do differently is use Snuffer 160's. It's a huge cut! Last years bird was walking away from me when I shot. Severed it's spine and he never took a step.

Looking forward to seeing one of those run through a bird, though it will be a shame to get such pretty arrows all dirty and bloody.........

Great Looking arrows.  I especially like the way you cut the fletching. Do you burn or have a  chopper?

Thanks everyone. I use a burner on the fletching. One of these days I'm going to have to break down and buy a real cresting jig. Mine consist of, an electric screwdriver, a 1"x6" and a 2"x4" with a "v" cut in the center. It's a little redneck!

My crester is a 1960's broken hand mixer taped together. It's variable speed and has crested thousands of arrows. However, I have found that camo feathers/arrows to be the way to go. I've had opportunity to kill a couple of birds when I wasn't in a blind but those bright green feathers do show up well in flight. By the way, we had tons of birds around for about a month and things got very quiet lately. The hens are apparently nesting and the males are showing up at unpredictable times and are not responding to calls. Are you still seeing birds? I'm thinking I may have to take a chance on the property in Barrington. Lots of birds there last deer season.

I always use a fletching cover over my bright feathers. I have one arrow fletched with natural barred feathers that I'll use on the string, if outside the blind.

Last week, in scouting for youth season, I saw 15 toms and Jakes in about a 2 mile stretch. Took my daughter out Sunday and never heard a peep. Also haven't seen a single bird anywhere in my travels this week. Hoping the more seasonable weather will crank them up a bit. Good luck Bill!

Seth, those are very nice. I see the Turkeys lining up right now to get shot by those arrows. Good luck.
