Title: Grip for Checkmate Attila
Post by: Nomis on April 28, 2015, 11:19:00 PM
I have been having some trouble with erratic arrow flight on my new checkmate attila. There are some times when I get really good arrow flight, and other times....not so much. Today I started shooting with the palm of my thumb turned further away from the handle and the results were great. Only problem is that this grip gets uncomfortable. I don't want to sound like I am whining, but does anyone have any suggestion at all? I would really appreciate it.

Try a none slip glove of some type, sounds like you might be getting movement of the bow in your hand upon release.

I also shoot Chek Mates.

I had a similar problem.  Here's what works for me.
You could be torqueing the bow. Assuming you are right handed, give this a try.

Extend your bow arm out and hold your bow hand palm down. Rotate your hand counter clockwise forty five degrees. Now slip your bow into your hand with the base of your thumb contacting the riser. Grip the bow very loosely. The grip should serve only to 1) keep the bow from falling out of your hand and 2) keeping the bow from flying out of your hand on release.

I found that if I maintained this loose grip my arrows grouped much better.

Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

If I recall correctly, in shooting the Bow and Arrow, Pope advocates for a loose grip.  His reasoning was that a bow would follow a natural plane during the draw and subsequent release.  A looser grip allowed the bow to settle naturally into the same hand placement each time.  If you had a tight "death grip" you would be fighting this natural plane and would have trouble being as consistent in your hand placement and grip alignment.
