Title: Youth Shafts???
Post by: Caleb the bow breaker on April 23, 2015, 10:05:00 AM
Guys,

I am looking for some youth shafts for my daughter's set up.  She is shooting something like 12-15 lbs with a draw of 22.5.  I would like to keep her in Carbons if possible just because of the durability.  What have y'all used and what should I stay away from?

One last thing,  I want to make sure and get her some "real" arrows with screw in points and regular nocks not the normal "youth" arrows with permanent points and over-nocks.  She wants to hunt with me this fall but I don't know that her poundage will be up there enough.  However there is no reason we couldn't go chase a rabbit or something.

Just asking... Why not wood???

I bought my sons DOZENS of wood youth arrows over the years!!!!! I always found them to be VERY durable!!! Problem was... They kept OUTGROWING them!!!!! I would buy a dozen youth arrows, then cut them to 2" past thier draw length, taper the ends and install REAL field points... (5/16 100gr.) They flew like darts, & REALLY stuck in a 3-D target!!! "If" you make your own, using 5/16 hardwood dowels... You can REALLY "Pretty them up" for her!!!!!

Just one Old Fart's suggestion.....

I wish you a lot of luck. I think there are carbons that MIGHT go weak enough for her. For me, they aren't long enough in the weaker spines. 800 spine is the weakest I can find in a 29" or longer.

For my granddaughter, I made up some aluminum arrows that work great out of a bow of that weight. I believe they were 1412s. Little 2" feathers and they fly great. I cut them to the maximum draw length for the bow, so no adult would over-draw the bow trying them. She requested purple and pink feathers and a side benefit of these shafts was that they came in purple.

Woodchucker

I dont have a problem with wood arrows and shoot them myself from time to time.  Was just looking for cheap, durable and functional arrows.  And never meant to imply that wood arrows arent real.  But I do feel that alot of the fiberglass arrows that are available are junk.

I might have to look into the aluminum.

Since i had to drop to youth shooting weights a few years back, I have tried a lot of arrows. My draw ability fluctuates with my health so I keep several different spines of arrows on hand.  Best solution I have found is Easton Jazz... not carbon, but they work and have done well.  They come all the way down to 1213.  I have a dozen shafts on hand in that but haven't had to go there.  Mostly, I use 1416 or 1516, full length.  If you shop real hard you can find tips with attachable inside weight systems even that small.  I have shot as low as 16# in 3D.  This year I'm lucky, I'm up to 22 - 25# 8^)  Oh, yes... my draw varies from 24" to 26" depending again on how I'm doing.

I need to revise my previous statement about difficulty in finding carbons for youth arrows. I was just looking through my Lost Nation catalog and I see that Easton now makes a carbon called the "Inspire" (appropriately named for a youth arrow). They run from 570 spine all the way down to 1400. Lost Nation says they stock only the 630 spine, but can special order the others. Easton's web site says they use one-piece zink points. Sound a bit fragile for a point, and probably not the best for stumping, but how much can a dozen zink points possibly cost?

I just made up a set using Easton Tribute shafts and they are great.   Used some 3inch feathers and 100gr screw in points.

I didn't price shop them but 3Rivers has them and I know they are a sponsor here so that's where I bought them.

I use 1/4" poplar dowels 48" long from Lowes, about a buck each. Cut them in half, 50 cents per arrow. Use 1/4" 70gr. steel field points,2 1/2-3" feathers Finished arrow about 2 bucks. Can use a little spray paint to dress them up. They fly great out of bows up to 25#.

Bearpaw's Penthalon traditional slimline series has 1000 spine in 30"" and up to 1600 spine in 28".

What do you guys use for wood shafts?  Does spine matter much on shafts for low poundage bows?  I see that surewood has wood shafts for $12 per dozen.  Thats a heck of a bargain.

I've had great luck making arrows from Easton jazz 1616.  Tjhey shoot great and hold up well altho the bows we are using are a little heavier, the lightest is 15@24.  I also have a supply of 1/4" ramin that makes great kid arrows.  Sorry, but I know nothing about carbons.

I use 3River's youth wood arrows & change the tips to 75gr glue on tips for my grandson. he's pulling around 9# and they fly fine.

I just bought some 1/4" 24" wood shafts from Kustom King, it's more of a dad/son project to work on soon I hope, but they were around $5 for 12.  Picked up some 60 grain field points and some 75 grain Hex heads to if I remember right.  I know you'd prefer aluminum or carbon, but these little woods look decent.

Make sure to check your local hardware store for 5/16 dowels.  Sometimes you can find some good ones if you sort through them. At about 40 cents each around here.
