Title: Stupid Turkeys!
Post by: bowtough on April 22, 2015, 11:52:00 AM
Well this is my second season hunting these dumb turkeys and I am no where nearer to understanding them than I was when I started this new addiction. How come you can be covered up with birds one day and then not a peep the next. Also does cold weather and wind shut them off?
Well time to practice my mouth calls. Ha, I am having a blast, just want to kill one this year though and time is runnin out!

That's turkey hunting... feast or famine. Weather can definitely have an adverse effect on hunting them. I've called them in during rain storms... and often they come in silent.

I've wondered how many times I've called birds in and never realized they were around. Many times I've thought there were none around, got up only to have turkeys flush "just out of sight" when sitting.

It is addictive... and lots of fun. Cold weather may slow them down some and shut them up... I've even seen them roosted late morning during high winds/cold.

If you KNOW there are birds in the area... get out all you can. It will eventually come together for you.

Good luck!!

There is no ryhme or reason why turkeys do what they do. Gobble their heads off one day and the next not a peep. Work a hung up bird for hours and then they just stroll in. Crazy birds, but I do love hunting and eating them!

Agree with the rest of the guys. Been doing this awhile and get jacked up every season for it. Taking my 9 year old grandson out Saturday for youth turkey day! Good luck.

Yup, took my brother last week. Nothing came close till the last night and the first we saw of him was standing there ten yards away. Walked right in. Tough birds, we had to chase him 100 yards into the brush to get him. Nothing like two out of shape guys chaseing a tom through the woods.

Thanks for the encouragement, I have two more days left of my season and plan to hunt till the end! Can't believe how exciting it is when one comes in gobbling his head off. Really leaves you wanting more.   :jumper:

Took me 5 years to kill my first one. They're not easy to kill with a Stickbow!

Mentally they are in a class of their own. I have seen them spook at the sight of a human, and other times run up to do the full display thing-ususally out of season.  Look at the eyes positioned almost on top of their heads.  They can see above them-for hawks, and have about 300 degree vision for everything else they fear.  Hard to get a full draw with tha tkind of vision.  Still, I pay out of state and head to California on  Saturday to be frustrated, again

They are only dumb on Sundays  here in Pennsylvania.  Sunday's they feed under the clothes line 30' of the back door.  They hide the other six days, rather well I might add.  I've missed a few and still trying.  Lots of fun.

Usually have no problem finding the little boogers, going to try a string tracker this year for the first time. Had one run off and bury himself in a spring under multi floral rose. Walked by him twice until he flopped and I heard him from a distance...guess I don't need to say what happens when you crawl in the rose! But it was worth every drop of blood!

I had a flock of turkeys I fed in my backyard all winter.  They got so I could throw corn and hit them.  They would run up to me within 5 yards.  I had a broom handle stuck near my well head so I wouldn't run into it plowing snow.  One day while feeding the turkeys I pulled the broomstick out of the snow and pointed it at them like a gun.  They all ran or flew completely out of sight, and didn't return for 3 days.  I don't think they are that dumb!
