Title: More Grizzly questions
Post by: jared s on October 07, 2007, 05:13:00 PM
Hi all,
Like a lot of other folks, I've been pouring over the Ashby reports and thinking about trying some new things this fall. Ever the broadhead tinkerer, I have Grizzlys in 3 different sizes already, 125, 160 and also 190 El Grandes but have never hunted with any of them.
After shooting a bunch of different arrow/broadhead combos today with some existing arrows, by far the best flight came from the 160 grain heads on my cedars. Here's the question: Anyone with experience with the 150gr El Grandes? How do they compare with the 190gr? The dimensions are listed as the same as the 190 gr head. I really really like the way the 190s take an edge, the steel is noticibly harder than the regular heads. I was really hoping they'd fly the best but that wasn't the case, so I'm thinking about ordering up the 150 El Grandes. Any comments or suggestions from any of you with experience with multiple Grizzly heads?
Thanks in advance.
Jared

Hey Jared,
I'm hunting for the first time this season with Grizzley heads. I bought the 145's and put the 30 grain screw in inserts in them to bring total weight to 175 grains. Mine shoot very well from my bow. I didn't know about the 150 El Grand heads until I read Dr Ashby's reports. In fact I was toying with the idea of going up to the 190 head but since there are 150's I'd like to try them both to see what works best from my bows.

Jared, If I may say so you kind of answered your own question with the comment on excellent flight with the 160. Stick with what flies best and get an animal to walk in front of your bow!

Check the furrel alignment.  I brough a dozen of the 190 to take on my elk hunt,  and found that five of them had crooked furrels. I haven't notifed the guy I purchased them from.   I ended up not using them.   The 160 have been perfect every time!                  mr.c

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Like I said, I was considering the 150 gr El Grande because I like the steel in the 190s a lot. I've gotten sharpening obsessed with everything the last couple of years and I really like the edge I can get on the El Grandes, although the regular Griz is no slouch.
Any other takes on this?

I've killed critters with the 190 with an adapter on a carbon arrow and the 145 on cedars.  Both of these heads get a thumbs up from me.  I have never used the 160, but if it flies well and is perfectly tuned with your set-up, I would not hesitate to hunt with it.
