Post by: Looper on April 14, 2015, 08:19:00 PM
Has anyone here participated in the self bow challenge at the Tennessee Classic?

I've helped a lot of guys tiller their bows there over the last 6 or 7 years.

I'm thinking about participating in it. What does it cost and when would it start?

I got lucky and won it a few years ago--the only time I've participated.  I had a lot of adult supervision making my bow.

You can start as early as Wednesday or Thursday (check with Pappy to be sure).  Cost depends on whether or not you bring your own stave.  If you buy one, depends on what you buy.  Other than that, I think it's just the tournament fee.

I want to do it again, if I ever get the time.  Lots of fun.  That year I shot the "Ironman" (longbow, recurve, and selfbow - one that was already finished).  I shot my best score with the bow I'd just built - go figure!

Contact Pappy(Mark Baggett). His contact info is in the "Events and Gatherings". He will give you all the details.
The club offers hickory staves with the Challenge sign-up and there will be osage staves through Gary Davis or Matt Wirwicki...or bring your own but it can only be floor tillered without string nocks cut in.
You will have some of the best wood bow builders around helping you through the process of building your bow.

...Rob Tattoo built a nice osage bow at the Challenge a few years ago to take on a bear hunt. Unfortunately for Rob, the bears weren't cooperating.

Thanks for the info. I sent Pappy a PM. I'm really looking forward to this event. On that Sunday, I'll be driving over to Pine Hollow to attend the bow making class with Mike and Ed. It ought to be a pretty fun 10 days for me.

Look me up Cheney. I spend most of my time at the Classic under the bow building shed.
