Title: New Bow - Navajo Bows
Post by: troubldstranger on April 10, 2015, 12:32:00 PM
I have been reading Tradgang for a while now and I guess it is time for me to contribute!  Who doesn't like to see a new bow anyways?

I ordered a bow from Roy Hall (Navajo Bows) last year.  I am only 30 minutes from Henderson, so I stopped by while I was traveling through on business.

First, let me say that his customer service is awesome!  I came in 'to look' and left after shooting 3 different bows with different options.  I was talking with him about the different styles in handles, takedowns, weight options, etc.  He had a couple of stock bows and let me shoot one.  When he talked about a different style, he got a bow out that matched it.  Then when we talked about the extra weight of a bowbolt takedown and he brought out another.  It took about an hour and a half, but finally got the options I wanted figured out.  I asked about the bow I had just shot because it was very close and asked about the price.  He said it wasn't for sell, it was his personal bow!  Talk about service!!  I can't say that he would always do this, but to let someone who just walked into your shop shoot your personal setup shows confidence in your product and a huge commitment to customer satisfaction.  I can't say enough about Roy!

So I ordered the bow I wanted: a RH Apache (reflex/deflex longbow) two piece takedown using the bowbolt sytem, 62" 55-60# @28 (I have a 28.5" draw), Bocote limbs with Osage tapers, Micarta handle and tips with Bocote in the grip.  I put almost half down to start, with the rest due at pickup.

Then the waiting game.... I was told it would take 2-3 months, but it ended up being 4.  I get the call in December from Roy which said the bow weight wouldn't be quite as heavy as I wanted.  It ended up being 52#@28.  Roy said if that was not acceptable, he would start over.  After talking it over with him, he convinced me that it would be plenty for elk (where I ultimately want to be) and I accepted the weight difference.  I went and picked it up and she was beautiful!

I have been shooting with her 3-4 times a week since then and have been more impressed than I ever imagined!

I have seen a couple questions asked about Navajo Bows. My suggestion is to call Roy and talk to him.  He only works half days most days, so you will probably have to leave a message and get called back.

Ok, now the good stuff!

It's colored like a yellow jacket, and I bet it stings like one. Good looking bow.

Roy is an artist-bowyer and a wonderful person.  I have always enjoyed visiting with him.  You got one COOL looking and shooting bow right there.  With the weather we got today I want to go sit on a stand and watch a bait for hogs.  I am just down the road from you...

Great looking bow!
My first custom bow was a Navajo 3 pc takedown longbow that was absolutely gorgeous and very mild-mannered. That was probably 18 years ago or so. Roy knows how to build 'em.

Enjoy your bow!!    :archer2:

No, I did not order the micarta and bow bolt specifically for the weight, I was actually testing it because I was afraid of the extra weight.  It turned out to be very comfortable with it, but I wanted a takedown version.  Roy only uses the bowbolt for takedowns and uses the micarta for the strength around the hardware of the bowbolt.

I had the same experience as Beau. Roy made mine once and wasn't satisfied so he told me he'd rather re-make it. Glad he was satisfied on try 2 since it was the last Azalea veneers he had! Such a craftsman!
