Well I'm trying a follow along again this year, just getting out to bait, season starts on April 15th.
Last years follow along as a reminder "o pumpkin head"

Now for this year?
Good luck Tim!Looking forward to a early start this year,for a change.Dell.
Good luck. Man I miss hunt bear in Canada. Hope I can make it north again soon.
I plan on being up in Sask around 30 May for a week of hunting....leave a couple nice ones for me to look over! :)
good luck Tim. Your follow alongs are always great!
One of our warmest/earliest springs in years, should bring them out early this year. The zone I hunt only has a short season running to May 31. So an early start really helps. I have started to prep. bait, stands and setup (site). I will start to put bait out after the Easter long weekend, should be dry enough by then to get in without making to much of a mess of the trail.
Good Luck Tim, I look forward to following along again this year.
Stick a big one dude!
Good luck. I miss bear hunting a lot. I really want to get on a hunt soon. Until then I live through you
Good luck Tim, I hope you have a great season. I enjoyed reading about your last years hunt and the pictures. Good luck to everybody else that will be hunting this spring too. I envy you folks that can hunt over bait. No baiting here in NY, but I've read that the DEC is considering it. If it does eventually happen, I don't know if it would be north, south, or both. I'd LOVE to be able to put out and hunt a bait up at camp.
Bob
Tuned in! Looking forward to this...
Really looking forward to this again, thanks Tim for taking us all along.
thanks for all the luck wishes, hope this is a good and fun follow for all.
Did some bait mixing today
lure 1 - sardines mixed with oil and saw dust, stinky and should spread a good trail.
bait, old buns soaked in bacon grease and syrup, oats and dog food with renderings out of a year of roasters / meat stock (turkey, hams, and roasts)
lure 2 - anise oil soaked oats
Thanks for this :campfire: :campfire: :coffee:
I'm tuned in on this one! :campfire:
What area are you hunting in Tim? I was up in Carrot river a few years back and had a blast. Hoping I draw a Michigan bear tag for this Sept. Good luck.
Cool stuff!
Keep us tuned in, we are hunting with Stickflingers the first of June, getting very excited for my wife's first bear hunt.
:campfire:
eight sleeps. I will post pictures of the bait and stand step up soon... snowing today so did not make it out but weather is turning around for next couple days.
Good luck, I'll keep checking back to follow along.
So your season in Saskatchewan opens on April 15th as well eh
DDave
Count me as a subscriber to this one...
I am been bear hunting in Sask twice, both year are been a blast can't wait to come back
Bait is out! nice here the last couple days (+10 to +20). Quote of the day, "Dad that stuff smells horrible, a bear would not actually eat that, would they?"

Bob
great time of year to be in the woods ... good luck :campfire:
:campfire:
Good luck, Tim. R U going to use the new bow.
Thanks, I may Kelly, Its a little shorter for the tree stand than my original chek-mate....likely try both.
:campfire: :coffee:
:bigsmyl:
This needs to get back on page one......looking forward to this hunt.
David
Here is some info and shots of my setup.
Tree stand, facing east for optimum filming light, bait is to the east about 15 meters along an old fallen Jackpine. to the south is a muskeg of black spruce that is a start of a creek that runs to the east. the stand is on a wind fall area of a Jack pine ridge that is fairly open.
(http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j435/Tloran/2015-04-16%2018.52.44_zpsz76yfszy.jpg) (http://s1085.photobucket.com/user/Tloran/media/2015-04-16%2018.52.44_zpsz76yfszy.jpg.html)
Bait is oat and dog food with a mix in of treats (breads, meats and sweets). just east of the bait is a scent bomb of sardines, oils and sawdust that has been socking and fermenting for about a month.
(http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j435/Tloran/2015-04-16%2018.52.55_zpsnxjgntzi.jpg) (http://s1085.photobucket.com/user/Tloran/media/2015-04-16%2018.52.55_zpsnxjgntzi.jpg.html)
Two days into the season and no bear activity yet, but very early spring for here so, bears might still be using "the length of day" for coming out of the den, also very little food to support them out of the den for any length of time.
I did not hunt tonight due to no sign but will keep a careful watch, and will do more consistent sitting come early may.
You said your Tree stand, facing east for optimum filming light, bait is to the west about 15 meters,
So if I understand your post, the bait is behind your stand?
Ranger 3, one of those ID 10 T errors, I edited now.
Should have been 15 meters east.
OK, that makes sense thanks
Would love to be up in Canada hunting bears this spring.
lots of wolf sign around the bait site. Not sure how much wolves will harass bears but know they do. I think the early year still is what is holding them off for now.
I saw wolves come in and run immature bears up trees around bait...wasnt a yearling but wasnt a 4 year old either...maybe 175 lbs. I dont think they bother any more than a big boar would same bears...plus the wolves tend to be much more wary and unwilling to commmit to a bait once they catch human scent after circling it...
Yup, Brock, wolves all around (from tracks) but no bait gone and not on camera. I think the lack of bears is still due to that is early.
No activity yet.....hum, put out 20 muskrats, hopefully that will have them coming.
:campfire: :coffee:
Good luck!
Bisch
Get a beaver carcass and hang it up in a tree as high as you can hang it.
Do you only have this one baitsite? How far are you from water? Is this the first time baiting this location?
The bear are out here in northern WI so yours should be out, too. It takes awhile for them to get accustomed to bear bait type food. Grass is all they want to eat for a few days after coming out of the den till their system gets used to other foods.
Better block off that downed tree or the bear will use that to get to top of barrel. Also is the thickest cover, ie swamp etc which direction from this bait, east? Never liked stands facing east with the bait east of the stand. Prevailing winds will give away your location every time.
My preferred stand locations were either north or south of the bait, mostly north. Always picked a baitsite location first, then tree stand. My preferred baitsite locations are the northeast, east and southeast side of large swamps with my first choice being the NE side because of prevailing south west winds.
You may want to try a drag trail to and from your baitsite at least a 1/4 to 1/2 mile in several directions, plus when a bear does hit the bait make sure there is a bunch of used deep fryer grease in/on the ground around bait container. That way every animal will carry notice of your baitsite wherever they travel.
Kelly, very early here still, some bear out but not many. Prevailing winds are from the east here, they have only been baited for one year, this being the second due to this was a new zone to be opened last year. This is my only bait site, can't afford the time to keep more up.
Keep the reports coming. I'm having a blast living your hunt vicariously!
Well, guess what is coming, its fury, likes oats, comes at night, is greyish black ???

Grey squirrel?

Sorry had to do this, Snow shoe hares. they are eating bread, oats, dog food, and fat scraps
First time I've seen that.
Still no bears..........
update, last several days have been below zero, today we got over a foot of snow. bear hunting's ups and downs, by Tues they say +17 and to stay for a week. hope they start coming soon.
Seems spring does not want to come.....hope you get a break soon. :campfire:
sorry to hear that for you...but might mean the cool weather will hold out until end of May and keep them from rubbing their coats too badly when I am there. :)
Brock, I know I'm holding on to my coat. They are sure slow to come this year, but sure they will, hope it is before the season closes.
LOL...last time I went it was warm for two weeks earlier...I get there and it is frost every night...I was this close to having wife overnight my pac boots and wool for me. There was not a Cabelas in Saskatoon back then...haha Bought the last 2XL thermals from TSC though...haha
Well snow is all gone again and + 20 C, but still no bears. Sorry guys this must be the worst follow along ever. very slow spring for vegetation, which I think is keeping the bear activity very slow. The camera did go off the night it snowed and some tracks were in the very corner of two photos (camera to slow to pick up animal) but I could not tell what kind of tracks and it did not commit to the bait or camera, telling me they may have been a wolf. Still holding out lots of hope but a little disappointed so far. 1 month of season left.
good luck to all others bear hunting.
yeah hopefully that stinky muskrat will draw them in as the hunger pains hit them...good luck.
May is the good month for bears in this part of the world...it only takes one bear at the right time to fill a tag...when I shot my bear in 2012 I was in the treestand for about 4 hours total and shot the second bear that came to the bait (the first one picked up the grease jug and ran off with it)

:campfire:
Well out again today, something ate all the bait not in the barrel, maybe a wolf or bear? no really good sign.
I walked 1 km in each direction with a scent drag and then to the truck where I greased a truck tire and went for a drive on some trails.
Hopefully that will bring them in. Not too much out yet.
Went out and sat for 2 hours today, no sign at bait yet, but some sign in area. Tried calling, mock fighting, etc. nothing! very cool here this week, I put bait out for over three weeks none of it is even rotting or smelling.
I'm glad to hear that you're starting to see some sign now. Keep at it, and the best of luck to ya Tim
Bob
:campfire: :coffee: :dunno:
Hopefully it picks up for you soon.
how long does your season last?
Look forward to your future kill thread!!
DanielB89, only until May 31....very short. Nothing today again, except a rabbit and some unsuspecting quaders that made a wrong turn. Sardines and popcorn out tonight, bait is finally starting to smell like it should.
Your season ends when my hunt begins in northern area of province near Carrot River. Good luck...will be up there in 2.5 weeks. :)
Good luck Brock, you will not be much more north but several hundred miles east. Weather is very weird this year one day twenty c and the next week 4 c. may want to brings some cold weather and warm weather cloths.
Well nota thing hitting yet, kind of getting depressed but still hopeful only 13 days in the season left.
Seems to be lots of wolves in the area, might be keeping bears away?
only things on camera is rabbits, racoons and the occasional baiter. lol
COME ON BEARS!
Sounds like you need a new spot ... two buddies of mine just returned from Alberta with two bears each ( shot with stick bows ) and can't stop talking about how many bears they saw ....
Any hunting can get discouraging at times for sure, but you're sticking with it, and I've got a feeling you'll be posting bear pictures any day now. Good luck.
Bob
Any news? Its coming down to the wire.
Friend checked bait for me tonight, I'm out of town working, nota thing.....
A little late and the wrongs sex but at least something. will post pics tomorrow! hunt Friday, sat and sun and then season is done.
Good Luck,. I hope you get to see something!
Here's what the camera saw!

They were there from the evening before right through to when I put new bait out after work.
The good news is you now know there is a rather large sow in the area...my understanding is that black bear sows only have cubs every second year...those are surely last years cubs though so she will likely have a couple more next year...try to find a way to identify her next year in case you hunt the same area...the small cubs are not always right with mom and you do not want to shoot her leaving her new cubs motherless...our laws here in Alberta prohibit shooting a sow with cubs but technically you could shoot one when the cubs are not visible...I shot a much smaller dry sow in Northern Alberta in 2012
DDave
Oh yeah and where there is a sow in heat there will be a boar or two around
DDave
Dave she is only somewhat tolerant of the cubs, one of the three from last year has already been punted, but other two still with her (same sow with the three cubs last year in my follow along) I'm surely hoping she is going into heat or at least an interest to the boars in the area.
only three days left in the season for this zone.... thinking of moving bait Sunday across hwy to other zone which is open until June 30th.
That zone will not be a archery only zone.
Cool, things are finally looking up, and the fact that you've got another month if you move across the highway is great news.
Stick with it Tim. I check on this thread every day to see how things are going for you.
Bob
WELL THE MOM AND CUBS SPREAD THE NEWS.

two small boars and one big one are coming now.
Awesome!! Here we go. :campfire:
Bob
Excellent! As hard as you've worked at this finding success at seasons end would sure be sweet!
Good luck!
One more day Tim, I hope you see something you can shoot at!
That truly is a big boar...hope you get him...there are actually no seasons here in Alberta for bear where one cannot use a gun...it really makes no noticeable difference...take a look at the Silverfoxoutfitters website to see what my buddy Eric's hunters, some gun and some bow, shot in one day last year...and there was one more that did not make the photo op
DDave
Nail it,good luck!
nothing came in this morning nothing hit the bait last night, will go out again this evening.
Down to the wire. I hope tonight is the night !
:campfire:
Well, nothing tonight... one more day.

I've never bear hunted and always wanted to. Threads like this are a real temptation :)
