Title: Old guys when they were young
Post by: Ron LaClair on March 30, 2015, 10:09:00 PM
Recently found this picture dated 1968 of my wife Nancy and I on my Honda Trail 90. I ended up owning two of those great little bikes. I even strapped a deer of two on the back but unfortunately I never took a picture.

Any of you other "older" guys got young pictures?

Right around that time I hunted for 8 days in a row without seeing a deer. On the 9th day I almost didn't go because it was really windy. I went anyway and killed a doe that evening with my Bear recurve. I tied it on the back of the Honda and road 4 miles home.

This picture is around 1961

What I was trying to comment on was the Kwikee Kwiver. Just like mine, I don't think they had even thought of a hood for them.
Surprised we're not all injured or worse from flailing around the woods with open quivers.
I started hunting in NC in 1970, every weekend the season was open.
I didn't see a live deer on the hoof for 2 1/2 years.
When I did see one, I about fell out of my Baker treestand shaking so bad.
Somehow, the doe ran into my arrow and died.

I don't have any hunting pics of myself in the early days.

Here I am in 67 at Ft Rucker, I was 19 years old.

The next picture is of me out in the shop making a flintlock rifle a couple of years ago.

I don't have a single picture of myself with my first longbow in 1955 or my second bow, a solid fiberglass bow in the late 50s/early 60s.

Here is one from 1969 with my first deer kill/bow kill. Sorry I have to keep posting it since I can't go back in time to take some more.

And here's me as a hippie in 1972.

And here's my best deer to date from the 70s.

And a fairly recent picture with my son and granddaughter at a 3-D shoot.

Love these kind of threads. I got the old part down pretty good but no pics of me , or very few at any time of my life. I do have one where we killed a bunch of coyotes and bobcats in eastern Oregon somewhere but no idea where. I just have been kind of camera shy or never bothered to haul one around. Too bad too because I have seen and been part of some really awesome stuff over time.

But I really enjoy your pics.

God bless, Steve

As I mentioned my greatest regret is not having any pictures taken when I was 11 in the mid fifties and received my new longbow, quiver, and arrows. Not one.

Then I didn't have any taken of my second bow, a solid fiberglass recurve when I was 14 or 15.

Then when I started to bowhunt in 1967 I didn't take any pictures. I took very few from 1969 through the 90s because I hunted a military facility inside the security area and you'd loose your privileges if caught with a camera inside the security area.

So a lot of my pictures are repeats and don't catch my archery and bowhunting formative years.

I've always been a little wild. Rumor has it I may have been raised by wild dogs.
My Mother snapped this picture of me when I was two years old. I'm sure I had a bow by then but it's not in the picture     :scared:

pred80, most of us do things in the reverse order - we get old and then want pictures. The trick is knowing enough when you are young to take the pics and then get old. The other way around just doesn't seem to work.

It also helps if you have something besides a Roy Rogers pin-hole box camera when you are young   :)

Yeah taking pictures was never considered then.  Plus no one had a camera.

Reddogge...  same thing in my photos. I started off life as a lefty.  In the third grade I had a teacher who forcibly, and I truly mean forcibly, made all the leftys switch over to right handed.

Randy, is your master eye still left? I think Jeff's is right but I never really asked him. I suppose I should but he's an excellent shot so I don't bother him.

my father is 77 and still uses the kwickee with no hood, he's stubborn and has a loud voice and I like to listen to him lay into people who tell him its dangerous, it usually begins with,  how old are you? then after 5 minutes they wished they never brought it up.

Kwikie Kwiver, I still have the scar 40 years later. I ran my hand down my bow limb to the handle with out thinking while I was talking to a friend who pulled up in his jeep. The first Bear Razorhead I encountered cut me to the bone and headed me to the Dr in a hurry.

The light line is the scar.

I did the same Dang Thing, Eric!!!!!  :biglaugh:

I had an old Kwiky-Kwiver, backward on my old 50# Bear Alaskan, so I could "step-through" string it.....

I strung it up... Then slid my hand down the upper limb, right into a 4 blade Zwickey Eskimo!!!!! Nice & deep, right into the heel of my hand... No Doctor though, Dr.Mom scrubbed it out, poured peroxide in it, swabbed it down with mecurachrome, and taped it up!!! You can barely see the scar anymore...

(I did have a "Purple Hand" for a month or so)

I guess since I really dont have any really early pics with a bow I'll start with this one.  I am the second guy in from the left standing.  If you old guys look real hard you may recognize a few folks from Englnd in the pic...  The Kinks.  We opend for them at the Accadamy of Music, NYC, I think it was 65...  My rocker and long full head of hair days.
