Title: Brace height on a HH Wesley Special
Post by: Cavscout9753 on March 29, 2015, 10:17:00 PM
Hello gang, so I have a Wesley Special on the way and was wondering what brace height people find to work best. Its 68". I know fine tuning will ultimatley dictate the end result, just wondering on a starting point.

Mine works best at 6 1/4 brace height.

I would start @ 6-1/2 then move up and down. I am @ 6-5/8 but I shoot 5-1/2" fletch.

I like 6 3/4" for my 68" Wesley Special--and it works well on all my Hills. And mike g. is right, you will get some info with the bow.

Cavscout9753, I shoot my Hills from 6" up to over 6 1/2".  The bow has a good used string, but the knocking point may not be correct.  Be sure to check the knock point height and let the bow tell you how high to set the brace height.  Don't be afraid of going on the low end.  It may work better for you.  This Hill bow has very slender limbs which I really like.  Good luck!

The paperwork that came with my Wesley Special says that a 70" bow should be braced at 6 1/2".  For shorter bows the brace height should be reduced by 1/8" for every 2" of bow length.

I like 6 5/8" on a 68" Hill.  And whatever you do please don't shoot it with B50, put on a FF material like Ultracam, Rhino or BCY-X and you will be impressed I promise.  And not too many twists in the string either.

Try this with your Hill or other ASL...
Start at no more than a 5.5 in brace height, no string silencers, and work up about 3-4 twists at a time. While most ASLs will tolerate a wide range of brace height and still shoot quiet with little vibration, they will definitely have a narrow range where they are just dead in the hand at the shot. I have ASLs from Northern Mist, Miller, Hill, Two Tracks, Schulz, Jet and Kimsha from 66in to 70in and every ones best brace height is somewhere between 5 3/4 and 6 1/8in. If anyone of them was better at 6.5in that's where I would leave it, but they are not.

Also I have noticed a ff string offers little advantage (arrow speed wise) on an ASL and prefer B50 for its better dampening characteristics. If your ASL is noticeably more shocky with B50 then it is out of tune. If you feel the need for string silencers, it is out of tune. All you should have is a low hum with B50 or a slight twang with FF and almost no vibration. I do use a little wool on the string (after tuning) to just about completely silence a hunting bow. Again, just try this, you may find you like your ASL a lot more.

If you are getting HH new from Craig, he send some information with the bow about brace height.
