Title: Waxing a Widow? Who does it? Pics of the sheen?
Post by: Bellasm on March 28, 2015, 10:53:00 AM
I love my psax, but I love it more when I clean it down with alchohol because of the sheen. I was wondering who waxes their widow and if you have a picture that shows the sheen that wax would provide? Any drawbacks to using wax? Thanks for your input.

I wax my bows with furniture wax and give them a good rub, during hunting season I wax but leave it on, dulls the finish while protecting the bow.

I wax all my bows with johnsons paste wax. Not too often about once a year. I would think alcohol might ruin the finish or ruin it somehow. But I'm no expert on glues and finish. Someone will chime in before long.

I use Martin guitar cleaner/wax. Protects great.

Widow uses a marine varnish, alcohol does not affect it. Mineral spirits sure might.

I like Birchwood Casey gunstock wax for all sorts of things...it also does a great job on leather and metal

I suspect that the wax just sits on the surface since the top layer of the bow material is a synthetic resin. I wipe my PLX down with a little Armor All Original protectant sprayed on a rag. I don't apply any to the grip. It cleans the bow, protects from UV and gives it a soft sheen just like it was when I first opened the box.

I used car wax on my 59 and 60 Black Widows.  I also use car wax on my others bows as well.
