Hiya everyone
I just want to express my thanks for this forum. I don't come from a hunting family and all of my friends are not interested in archery or bowhunting, so the information that I have gotten so far from this forum has been awesome. Thanks so much for the newbie article, it has been very helpful. I held a bow for the first time today, and I was shaking for an hour afterward from the adrenaline rush I got from it. I can't wait to start learning how to shoot it. I am looking forward to learning more from all of you. Hopefully I can find people in real life to guide me on this journey. Again, many thanks.
Welcome to the Gang! :archer2:

Aaahhhhrrriiiigghhhhttt!!
Welcome and enjoy your new journey!!
:campfire: :coffee:
Thank you everyone!! I went to the range today, and it was so awesome! The last time I felt that much adrenaline was when I shot a gun for the first time. Everyone there had a good chuckle watching me because I kept walking back and forth after collecting my arrows with a big silly grin on my face. I want to post pics but I cant at the moment, have to figure out how. Going back on Tuesday for some unlimited practice.
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Welcome!

Most of my groupings look like this:

Welcome to your journey with the wonderful flight of the arrow...
:campfire: Welcome to the fire. :coffee:
I did improve a little, this was at 10 yards.
I even got a bullseye.

Yep, I'm hooked.
You must be doing it right...you're shooting better groups than many of us old timers.
Wow, thanks! I took an archery lesson at a place near me. The instructor was very patient and explained things very well to me. I am also getting lots of guidance from other seasoned archers that come there to practice. I am very grateful to them and this site. Very grateful.
I can't take too much credit-I was using a starter bow...
Sounds to me like you're a natural! I've been pretty much learning and shooting on my own too, and this place has been a wealth of helpful information and support. Good folks here.
You will probably end up meeting with some of 'em down your way. Meanwhile, you'll find a welcome to all or any questions.
Welcome, from the Green Mountain State.
Big welcome from the high north.
Groups are looking good! Welcome and enjoy!
Welcome to our common addiction! The folks here are the finest you will find on the Internet.
Welcome!
I've been here for years, hunted and shared many a campfire with some fine people from this site and I live here in Aussie!
Enjoy the journey, ask as many questions as you like as you'll always get the answers here.
Cheers,
Ak.
Hi. Welcome. I'm a new member too. I understand the adrenaline rush. I'm having lessons through my husband, Mudd. It's awesome when you let the arrows fly!!! I hope you have as good of a time learning as I am.
Welcome to our campfire, Liz!!!!! :campfire:
By the looks of things, you're doing VERY well!!! Shooting better than me... I couldn't hit water, if I fell out of a boat!
You'll have to drive on over to Tannehill park in June for the Howard Hill Classic. Lots of wonderful scenery, people (men, women and younguns) and as much shootin as you can handle. You can even meet one of your neighbors from Albany Ga., Big Jim trust me you cant miss him. Great guy and he'll have all kinda goodies. Lots of other sponsors from Trad Gang will be there as well. Follow the Events and Gatherings forum for updates. Welcome and good shooting :clapper:
Thank you everyone for the encouragement. It has been a rough 2 years for me, and things are starting to get better. When I am shooting I feel peace. I am looking forward to someday meeting some of you.
Thanks Possum, I just might check out that event!
I just read this thread through. You went from holding a bow for the first time, to shooting some nice groups in a hurry. keep up the good work, and have fun.
Bob
Welcome again from WV. That was great to hear how you shook all over the first time you held a bow. That is about how I feel about the sport. Good luck in all you do.
Welcome from Kentucky!
Welcome from Pa. Great shooting!
Welcome from Ohio
I haven't been all week, :( Gotta wait for payday. It won't be long I will be getting my own bow...

I've always said there should be three days in each week. Payday, Saturday and Sunday. :D

Are you by any chance, Left handed Liz??? ;)

Yes! How did you guess?
Liz,
Welcome to our merry band. Enjoy your journey.
Hi Liz!!! Check your PM's ;)
Like the Mark Twain quote
I like your quote, Liz. My niece, Kaelyn, who is five, shot with me this past weekend. She loves the movie Brave. She wants me to call her Brave, instead of Merida.
Hang out here and soak it up.
Welcome!
Your niece sounds awesome. I'm glad the girls in this world now have a princess that doesn't need saving to model themselves after. :)
I am soaking it up, so much on this site, thank you. :)
Here's Brave. Please forgive the poor flip phone pic...I refuse to get a smart phone. For now.
(http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Equismith/0403151448%202.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/Equismith/media/0403151448%202.jpg.html)
Great picture, thank you. Nice to know I'm not the only one with a flip phone too.
Bob
Great pic :) I wish I had a daughter...
The only reason I have a smart phone is because my niece gave me her old one after she got a new fancy one. If I am going to spend $100 to $200, it will be on a new bow, not a phone.
Speaking of a new bow, I am expecting one on Monday or Tuesday. I never thought I would say this, but this is the longest weekend of my life. HA
I can't wait!!!! For today I will go to my 2nd archery lesson...
What kind of bow is finding a new home in your hand? Curious minds want to know. :archer2:
1970's Bear Patriot Recurve. It's 66" 35# @ 28". Blue "Futurewood" with a Red accent stripe Riser and White glass limbs. I just found out today that my draw length is exactly 28", so that's perfect.
I am SOOOOO excited!
At the range today, I got a little discouraged because I wasn't shooting as well as the last time I was there, which was the 31st of March. (I didn't have the money to pay for the practice time, equipment rental, etc.) The instructor must have seen my frustration because he then told the class that one has to practice 3 times a week to keep the brain programmed to shoot. That made me feel a lot better.
Stay with it!! Even after 40 years or so of shooting, a person can have off days. Don't ask how I know this!i :D
Kenny got that one right. Some days "it" just doesn't click. You just need to stick with it.
Is there a traditional club near you in Ga? Stumpin is great practice also!
I'm happy to hear that you have a bow on the way, and how excited you are over it. I enjoy traditional archery and bowhunting as much now as I did 40 years ago, and that's something I can't say about a lot of other things. It has a charm all It's own, and it never seems to get old. Congrats on your new bow, enjoy.
Bob
There are some clubs near me. I am trying to take baby steps with all of this, to make sure that I am serious about it all. So far I feel like I am. Even when my shooting is sucking, I still get the rush from it. I don't have to think about anything else except the next shot. Very therapeutic.
I got it!! I got it!!
As you can see, my 6 year old was excited too!
Can't wait to shoot it! (Don't worry, no dry firing here)
THANK YOU CHUCK!!!!!!!!(woodchucker) WOOHOO!
Now you're cooking with gas! Left-handed and with a bright blue flame , to boot. Woodchucker nailed it!
Nice!
If you decide you don't like it...I know a lefty..... ;)
Nice bow!!
Thank You, for the WONDERFUL pictures Liz!!!!! Looks like it fits you perfectly!!!
The SMILE, makes it all Worthwhile!!! :bigsmyl:
Fantastic!!! Keep at it. We all have good days, bad days and the occasional amazing day with bow in hand. There is a link further down to the Traditional club in Georgia. I am sure they have gatherings and shoots that could help you meet some local folks to help you with your journey.
http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum&f=34&submit=Go
That's great, thanks for sharing the pics. Enjoy your new bow.
Bob
That's a sharp looking bow! Welcome to the addiction. It's a wonderful journey you've begun.
I get to shoot her tomorrow, I can't wait! :D
Have Fun, Liz!!!!! Keep us posted!!!!! :archer:
Welcome from ky :wavey: and keep us posted
I was just reading all of this thread for the first time. Welcome home to the Trad Gang family Liz. Many great people here as your finding out. We all get excited about others getting excited about traditional archery. Looks like your a natural and wish you a great journey. Enjoy your new bow. :clapper:
Welcome! :wavey:
I saw the pictures of you with your bow, and it looks like you made a good choice. Don't worry about the on/off days regarding accuracy, we all have them. Somebody mentioned the Howard Hill shoot at Tannehill Park in Alabama. It is a really good one to attend if you can. Many vendors, and many great shooters to meet. I have been going since 2008 and consider it one of my favorites. Also, I think Byron Ferguson will we holding a clinic/seminar, which I enjoyed. Keep at it, you are doing great.
A pretty bow for a pretty Lady! Just keep shootin', and don't worry about those off days. They only make those days when it's on, that more exciting. As for stumping, go for it!! I find that I am a far better shot out in the woods, than on the range. And you get that huntin' feelin' at the same time.
Well Folks... I wonder how she made out? :archer:
At the range right now, taking a break :) . Arm got tired. Will text more later.
This is me right now:
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I'm happy to see how fired up you are over this. Your enthusiasm is contagious Liz. I'll be waiting for further news. ;)
Bob
I love love love this bow!!!! When I first got to the range, I was a little down. I even had a slow start. I shot the new bow for about 30 minutes, and had to rest. I tried using the starter bow that the range had me using, and it was like pulling nothing! I switched back to the patriot-crazy how fast I got used to the new bow. My groupings at first were all over the place, then I was able to bring them in a little. I showed George (Ryals) and his son at the range my new bow, and they said it was an awesome bow, that it looked like new. They were very impressed. At first I was shooting 10 yards, then 15, then back to 10. When I was getting ready to leave, I decided to fool around and shoot 25 yards, just to see how I do. One time not even hitting the paper the target was on, and one broken arrow after it hit the ladder next to the target, I finally hit the target.
Yup, Just FINE!!!!! I knew it... ;)
You're doing GREAT Liz!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
Another archer there using a compound bow said I was also doing all this without a "sight". I will have to look up exactly what that is...
15 yards
At first my arrows were all over the place, but then I was able to bring them in a little:

NICE!!!!!!!!!! :bigsmyl: Can't wait to see what those targets look like in a month or so...
:clapper:
Am really enjoying your jumping into this fine sport and hope it is a hobby you will continue with. If you do stick with it your son will be sure to follow also. Memories will be made.

Welcome to your journey with the wonderful flight of the arrow...
Love this.
Thank you everyone for the encouragement. You don't know how much it means...
I am pretty sure I will stick with it. Nothing else has given me this much joy. I have 3 boys-14, 9, and 6. They are already showing an interest.
Excited about the 25th-I will be going to the ALZ shoot in Culloden, GA. Don't know if I will be able to go to Tannenhill park, though. That is a 3 hour drive.
Keep at it Liz and I hope to see your boys shooting with you also!
Take your time and enjoy yourself. You are doing well and don't sweat the occasional miss or broken arrow.
(An advantage of shooting cedar arrows is that when you break one it smells nice..) ;)
Shooting a bow instinctively takes practice and time to acquire the muscle memory that is a big part of the skill set.
I shot the bow last night until my arm almost gave out. I am so addicted!
Can't wait to go stump shooting!
George (Ryals) at the range showed me what a sight was and exactly how it worked-I told him I will pass on it. I want to do this on my own without anything extra.
Yep. You're hooked. And you're doing it from the right (I mean correct) side too. :clapper:
Yes, you are doing just fine. Your enthusiasm is very contagious, even for those of us who have been doing this for a long while. I hope to meet you at Culloden this weekend.
I don't know if anyone has told you but you are only given so many bullseyes, so don't use them up on practic :-) Have fun and enjoy.
I am still planning on it Sam. Getting my vehicle ready for the drive. :D
Gee... I hope she's having FUN??? :coffee:

Thank you Rob!!!!
Thanks everyone, every response has just encouraged me so much! I had soooo much fun at the 3D shoot in Culloden!!! So many times I had to stop and breathe through the adrenaline rush!
I went through the course twice, lost one arrow, and missed a few targets, but these were my best:
This one was my favorite, we shot at the turkey through a bush:

In this one, the arrow I am touching is mine, the other 2 belong to Barry (BWD on here), and Jeff from TBG:
Thanks to Jeff and Dan from TBG who loaned my boys some bows and arrows, they can now join me!! I am so grateful!!!!!
I can't wait, I hope I can go to the ones in Ranger, GA and Gainesville, GA. If I am really lucky I can go to Tannenhill Park.
WHOOP WHOOP :jumper:
I think we got an archer, here!
I shot the course with Liz at Culloden, which was her very first round of 3D. She did really well! In relation to the time she has been shooting as compared to how long I have been at it, she outperformed me. Woodchucker, that bow you provided her suits her just fine, and yes, it is obvious that she is having great fun. She repeatedly mentioned how she loves the bow and how thankful she is to have it. She also repeatedly reminded herself out loud to slow down and breathe through the adrenaline rush. It was really fun to shoot with her, as her enthusiasm just bubbled over all through the day.
Liz, never lose the excitement for archery that you now feel. I hope your boys join you in this adventure. I also hope you can make these other shoots you mentioned. The more you shoot, the more fun it gets. It was a lot of fun to shoot the course with you.
Awesome job Liz. :archer2:
Bob
This just gets BETTER & BETTER!!!!!!!!!! :bigsmyl:
Sam, Many Thanks to you & all the Folks at Culloden, that made this such a WONDERFUL time for her & her boys!!!!! :notworthy:
Love your excitement Liz! We feel it and it excites us! Your journey is definitely on! :goldtooth:
This thread just makes me smile... :)
Thanks everyone! For the first time in my entire life, I found a sport that i love! I wish i had done this 20 years ago!
Liz, glad to see things coming together for you! Nothing more soothing than the flight of an arrow hitting where you want it. My daughter found shooting to be a great way to spend the weekends with me. She will be starting college in August and I hope we find time to still get out.
Enjoy and remember, it's not the end but, the journey that makes it all worth while! TW

Just Jumping in here...
It tickles me to see someone get into the sport with as much enthusiasm as you are showing Liz.
Congrats and it sounds like you bumped into some of the best people on here.

Yep, just caught up on this journey. Great work Liz and enjoy!
Good work maam! I especially love the fact that your kids are enjoying it too! :wavey:
Looks to me like you have the "sickness". You are certainly shooting it very well.
Love that the kids are playing too.
Thanks everyone! TW, I think it's awesome that your daughter goes with you! Its good to see more women into archery and bowhunting! :D . I am hoping to one day go on a hunting trip of my own!
I'm glad to hear that you'd like to hunt someday. If you think shooting your bow is exciting, wait til you draw on a deer, turkey, whatever. I've been hunting for 40 years and my heart rate and breathing go up to dangerous levels at that time, lol. The day that doesn't happen, is the day I quit hunting.
Bob
Hiya everyone!!!
Been without a computer for 3 weeks, it about killed me!! hahahahaha!!! Got some photos here of my boys shooting the bows TBG lent us! Those guys are awesome!! I am continuing to practice, I bought a target for the back yard, and my boys have joined me!! Haven't been able to make a 3D shoot since ALZ, I have been working so much, but SOON! Thanks to Rob for all of the pointers and advice on my form !! Thanks to Chuck (woodchucker) for all of the equipment that he has sent me and my boys!!! Without him NONE of this would be possible!!! I can't wait to someday PAY IT FORWARD to someone else with children!! :D
Look at that form!! I am a proud mama!

A fellow tradganger told me to squeeze my shoulder blades together, so I am working on doing that. I will also check out the shooters form forum...
It doesn't seem to be hurting my shooting though, this was at around 20 to 25 yards:

Our grandsons are coming up at some point today to do some shooting.
 woodchucker, that's a beautiful thing you did. :clapper:

Welcome Back Liz.
Bob, Chuck is one of the best, I think you two would hit it off. Perhaps you need to meet?
love seeing family archery, way to go!
liz, yer at the point where you'd benefit greatly from on-the-spot coaching by either a qualified coach or archer, specifically schooled in traditional instinctive archery. someone who, when yer at full draw, can push yer bow arm elbow down, and reference your deltoids/back muscles so you'll instantly know what you need to do.

They say opposites attract, so you may be right about that Charlie. ;)
Chuck and I may do a little hunting this fall. I'm hoping to make it to OXTAR in Sept. to talk it over with him.
To be honest, I've always been kind of a loner, but since joining Trad Gang, and interacting with the people here, I've found a whole bunch of folks I'd like to meet, you included. The problem is, being the poor boy that I am, I can't travel very far to meet anybody.
I've actually thought about inviting you out here for a turkey hunt all season, but the turkey population is so low here this year, that I don't think it would be worth your time to drive out. In the years prior to this one, you would have had a blast.
I have that sneaky old bird I've been hunting on my friends place, but he hasn't been able to get out yet this year due to his work, and I don't know how he'd feel about me bringing somebody else over to hunt. I'd like to get together with you sometime though.
I still haven't gotten outfitted for bowfishing, but if you like to hunt frogs, maybe we can get together when that opens and shoot a few of them. Sounds like a good time to me.
Bob
Just finished reading this post. Liz has made my day. It's really good to see Liz's enthusiasm and the great people who have complimented and helped her on this site.
I have never met a greater group of people in my life. I am looking forward to making new friends and the future more than ever. I don't think I will be good enough for hunting for awhile though. Need to practice a lot more and start collecting the gear I will need.
P.S. I have been working so much, I just had a chance to open the bows Chuck sent for my boys. I can't get over the generosity.

Thank you so much Chuck.
Enjoy your traditional journey Liz. Looks like you found a home here on Trad Gang! :archer2:
Went to my 2nd 3D shoot, the North Georgia Traditional Archery Club shoot. The course was awesome, very realistic (as far as actual hunting goes). I had so much fun, I shot the course 3 times!! Got my elbow down finally, took a couple of weeks of practice and concentration. I posted the album of pictures I took in the Trad Events and Gatherings forum, but here are a couple of my best ones:

It looks like you had a great time at the shoot! Thanks for posting the pictures.
Nice looking arrows Liz!!!!!
That's some mighty fine shootin' Missy!!!!! :archer2:
LFD, good for you. Remember why you got into stick bow shooting, having fun and enjoying yourself so keep it that way and you will be shooting for a very very long time.
Good another lefty ! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: Welcome from the thumb of Michigan
It is good to see the enthusiasm is still running high. I am glad your sons now have bows, too. Next time we shoot, I hope they come with you. Congratulations on your progress.
Looks like some good shooting to me.
I sprang from a nonhunting family too! Looks like your learning curve will be a lot steeper than mine, you lucky gal. Internet and a network of enthusiasts will be just the ticket to fuel your fire. Good to have you aboard.

I love your enthusiasm. Every time you post, it makes me want to go out and shoot some arrows. :D
Thanks for all the pics too.

Thank you everyone!! I hope I never lose the enthusiasm I feel now. I am loving the sport and the people I am meeting! Life is good!!
Sam, I will be bringing them next time. :)
Missed ya at the NGTA shoot.
I made it North all the way to Grayling, Michigan! Got to shoot 2 other courses in different towns, go camping, and canoeing!
Best vacation ever!!! All of the Grayling pics are in Trad events and gatherings. Met some great people!

Liz, it is great to catch up with you again. I'm glad to see you're still loving the adventure. It looks like your progress continues to be very steady. Keep it up!
I took my youngest son to the NGTA championship shoot. It was his first one and he loved it! He shot both courses and did pretty good! I will post pictures when I get internet back. My other two sons are a little more receptive to it now, seeing how much fun Nathan had.
I'm glad to hear it Liz, the fun is contagious. Looking forward to your pics, and don't be a stranger. ;)

Great thread. Love your enthusiasm Liz.
Has anyone directed you to the Archery Library online?

I think it was Jerry, lol! He was telling dirty jokes that day, hahaha!
I want to go to Compton next year

This thread is awesome! Thanks for the motivation Lady Frost. :D
Well, hello again everyone.
I went on my first hunting trip last weekend in Michigan. We went to one spot and built up a couple of existing blinds, then saw a lot of scrapes, beds and rubs in that area. Very exciting. However, the next day the wind was not right, so we ended up going north a little and building up a blind there and sitting for a couple of hours. Very hard to sit still and quiet, but I made it, lol. Didn't see any deer, but still had so much fun. Going back in a couple of weeks, hopefully this time I will see some deer and even see my friend shoot one.
Hi Liz!!!!! Sounds like you had a GREAT Time!!!!!
BUT... Wouldn't it be better if YOU got to shoot one...??? ;)
Maybe next year, need to work on getting my license and becoming a better shooter. I want to though. Gotta work on controlling my adrenaline. My friend told me that he might not want me to see a deer up close, that I might have a heart attack, lol.
It has been a year...
I want to express my gratitude again to everyone I have met and talked to over the past year. You all have made all the difference in my life. I started over fresh and my journey so far has been the best in my life with the exception of having my children. I feel like I am really living now instead of just existing. Discovering my love for archery and the people associated with it has helped me grow as a person. It has opened my eyes and my soul.
Thank you to Woodchucker for my bow, I still love her and shoot her and I really haven't had the desire for any other. Everywhere I go people ask about her and some want to see her and hold her. I am thinking about giving her a name, lol.

Thanks to Rob for the form tips. :)
I have met so many great people. The gang from the Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia have been so supportive. The people here on TG and GON also have been invaluable, I am so so grateful.
I finally met some women hunters and some of us are planning a hunting trip this fall!!!!! I have a LOT to do to prepare!! WOOHOO!!

Thanks to everyone who have supported me and sent me links and tips, and those who have helped me and my boys with the archery equipment, I hope someday to pay it forward. I have been invited to volunteer helping teach kids the basics, I will start there.
Thank you again everyone, I hope the next thing I post will be my first trad kill!!
Awesome thread describing your then new venture from one-year ago to your progress now.
Congratulations on what has been a phenomenal and successful journey for you.
Wish there was some way to get my wife and daughter as enthused about archery as you are. I reckon they'd have a wonderful time of it as well.
Archers are a great bunch of people. nuff said.
Way to go Liz! Passing on the tradition is a very satisfying element of Traditional Archery. I wish you well!

 :archer:
Good stuff! Thanks for joining our campfire and making it a better place!
You will get your Deer just stay persistent and don't get discouraged. My friends laughed at me when I first switched to a stick bow but after many deer and small game kills they are not laughing anymore .
An inspiration.
Liz,
New to the forum and just finished reading your journey of the past year. What a story!
You mentioned early on that no family or friends were into archery or hunting. You have obviously found your passion and have affected so many here and those you have met along the way. So just curious what was the spark that got you going?
Seems to be the only missing part of this wonderful story.

Well, I started to go down the outdoors path back in the summer of 1993 when I visited my Uncles farm in upstate NY, but my life took a detour and I didn't rediscover myself until 20 years later. My attention was turned toward archery by someone I knew as a teen, but was no longer in my life. I figured I would try it. I knew I was bit as soon as I held a bow for the first time. And, well, you guys know the rest! :D
P.S. I feel like I am on the path that I always should have been on. Better late than never. I am even planning to pursue a DNR degree. :)
Thank you again to everyone for your support. Archery has really saved me.
