Have you ever killed a turkey with traditional equipment?
Yep, planned on a slam. Missed an Osceola and haven't had the time off to get after other subspecis
Not yet. Not a shot at yet, in fact; hard to get close enough. I think I need to dress my decoys more provocatively, or get comfortable shooting farther out.
I've killed a few turkeys with traditional bows. Some while turkey hunting, and a few "bonus birds" while I was deer hunting. I've also had some bad experiences shooting turkeys with broadheads. They were 100% my own fault, and they haunt me. I think I'm going to switch to bullheads, or something similar for my turkey hunting. I'll either have a dead bird, or one I can hunt another day. Thanks.
Bob
One time, one of my arrows went where I wanted it to.
Turkey have been my "jinx" animal. Elk, deer, bear, squirrel, rabbit, groundhog... etc. no problem.
Many close calls with turkeys. Hopefully this will be my year to close the deal.
I had this critter as my personal albatross until 6 years ago, then it was a floodgate thing. 18 birds now and counting...I love those crazy birds!!!
I've killed two in my 50+ years of trad hunting. One was a lucky shot the other hit where I wanted it to go. Both Rio's. in Texas.
I have taken 1.
was my 1st year on public land, since then I have called 6 i under 20 yards but only managed to get one other shot off.
Some of them were with out a blind so that made it tough!!!

I remember that Mike now your the master turkey killer
Wish I would have kept track how many over the years. :dunno:

Exactly 20.More frustrating than deer hunting but also more addictive. Once you figure out a "system" that works for you the shots will come. RC
Not yet. Can't wait for season to open here. I'm going to change my tactics this year. In the past, I hunted them like I do with a shotgun...works great for a shotgun but no so much with a bow. I've had a bunch in range but always got busted on the draw. Gonna be more stationary this year and use a blind and decoys. Not my favorite way to kill turkeys but I REALLY want to take one with a bow.
Two in my first trad season. A jake and a longbeard. These were from a blind. Next bird will be without blind.
Tracy,
I learned from the best, bud! Let's just say your talley would be in dump truck loads :) We HAVE to do a turkey hunt together man.
If I can kill one anyone can. I made every mistake in the book and had some crazy things happen from my wife taking a nature hike in the woods I was hunting to a helicopter spraying mustard weeds in the field I was in just as I was drawing.
Redemption is sweet though :archer2:
6 toms and one hen in my journey since I have taken up trad in 2008! It for sure is an addiction of mine I must say...COME ON MAY :coffee:
Man i envy you guys!! Ive killed a blue million turkeys, but this is my first trad only year and im excited to say the least!
One, hoping to add to my total this year!
Yes , and I hope to add to the list this weekend..I absolutely love to chase long beards with my bow..
,,,,Sam,,,,
2 for 2! 2013 and 2014. Get them close enough to smell the acorns on their breath.
Im hoping this year will be tbe year.
I think my count is up to 10. Took a while to get #1 but the only season I did't fill my tag since then was last Fall. What I am proudest of is that 3 of them I stalked and got them.
My turkey kill story is EPIC!!! Your not going to believe it! It's got ups, downs, suspense, action! ....... I've just got to kill one first, then I'll tell it :goldtooth:
5 or 6 so far......It may be my favorite pursuit!
Several. It may be my favorite pursuit anymore!
Another "I wish" for me. Few and far between in these parts of colorado. Other parts they are plentiful. Most CO people just go to nebraska.
One, my first trad kill!

I think about 10, spring and fall, Eastern's and Mirriam's, adult toms, hens and jakes. Hope to add another in a few days when season opens here in Nebraska
got 3 with my recurve. missed at least 5.
I suck at turkey hunting but sure try hard.
Got one fall bird while deer hunting
Have killed a few, 5 to be exact.
Hasn't come together...YET. I'll be after them 4/6! Probably will be getting out this weekend to find em
No! I missed
Killed a very nice tom a few years back, missed more that a few trying, I keep going back to the spring woods, great hunting!
I have shot about a dz trad turkeys. Used to have a lease that was covered up with turkeys, but it is gone. I am looking for a new place now.
Bisch
killed one and missed one with a trad bow. they are a hoot.
The most un-exciting hunt of my life. I drove 10 hours to my camp in OK arriving at 1:30 in the morning. Took a quick nap, got to my spot a half hour early. Pitched the tent, waited 10 minutes and yelped one time. A gobbler pitched out landing 5 steps from my blind . Not a gobble or nothing. by 7:20 I was back at camp loading the jeep for the drive home.
I have too many turkeys, they hang out at the end of the barn clean-out. Shot them with bows, shotguns, dynamite is next just get them out of here.
Not yet, but I am hopeful for this upcoming season. Only a few weeks away!
I think turkeys have eyes in the back of their heads..LOL...One of these days I'll get one. 'course he might have to be blind.
11 and counting...
The better question, for me anyway, would be "have you killed a trad turkey without a blind?" I don't do blinds and have been trying to kill one for several years. Got close last year with a chair and my ghillie and mmmmmissed - twice!
I have about eight or so ... I'm lucky to have a good friend with turks on his property that I can hunt, lots of fun and a good reason for friends to get together after a long winter break.

All of mine have come via spot and stalk; I'm a lousy turkey caller, evidently.
This year will be my first year hunting trad and I'll start with turkey. I'm optimistically realistic about my potential success :goldtooth:
I got my first taste of turkey hunting last year and was seriously impressed with the difficulty factor. i swear those birds can read a newspaper at a 100 yards.
I was hunting in a ghillie suite with very little cover. I had a lot of close encounters, but never dropped the string on one. I will be spending a bit more time on set up, & building some brush blinds this year...... Great sport! these are very challenging to hunt.
Yes, last fall. My first and only.
Never killed one before the spring of 2000, since then 30 I believe...luv everything about it!
Scout everyday for at least a month before the season starts, can't wait!!!
I've killed 10. Took a while till I got #1 but haven't missed getting one in five season til this Fall. Best of all, 3 of them were stalked.
Did you forget you already posted that Bill? My memory sucks too  always enjoy your threads.
Curt is the turkey Guru!!!! He shares some great advice to be learned if you really want to kill a bird with your tradbow. Go back and read some of his previous threads over the years and study them. Good stuff
Tracy
No, not yet. But, I will be trying again next month.
Not yet, 2 swings and 2 misses.
One miss...........no luck in calling them in.......but I don't try very hard either!!! :notworthy:
One back in Kansas in 2005 out of my pop-up blind with my Bob Lee Classic Takedown recurve, CE Heritage 250 arrow tipped with the old Bear razorhead. Haven't hunted them since.
Father/Son same day...tippit

Got my first yesterday! Awesome experience!,
Congrats man! Pics? Story?
I've only killed a few but I blame that mostly on the fact that I don't have access to any areas where the live close by. I drive 4 or 5 hours to be able to hunt them. I must say I'm getting better. I think one thing that has maybe helped me is that I have never gun hunted them. I've gotten birds in gun range every season but getting them in close enough for my limited range recurve bow always proved difficult. By far the biggest thing that has helped is always trying to improve my calling, and a good set of decoys!
Yes and I love hunting turkeys with my longbow!
I should also add that my wife has become absolutely addicted to turkey hunting so I now spend most of my time trying to get her a bird rather than hunting myself!
I had a Texas turkey step out in front of me as I walked back to my truck. 18' and he didn't make it.
