Hey guys. Another arrow question. I have read multiple things about 8-10 GPI for arrows. Here is my current setup:
45# @ 28"
Easton XX75 2117 @ 31.5"
125 gr points
Arrow weight 548 g
This comes to roughly 12.2 GPI
I am having decent results so far. No bare shaft/ paper tuning yet. I am more focused on achieving consistent form right now. I am just wondering if I am in a good ball park for my setup?Should I cut the arrows any shorter? I am thinking about buying another half dozen arrows and wanted it to be a smart purchase.
Or do I just need to shoot and stop worrying about all this?
Thanks in advance
I think you answered your own question. You said you were getting decent results and working on your form. Sure sounds like a plan to me!
Once you start stacking the arrows in there really tight together, THEN I'd take a look at tuning to get things as good as possible.
I made the mistake of getting carried away with tuning long before my form was anywhere near acceptable and really hit a plateau. It wasn't until I posted a video of my form and Arne Moe got me back to working on form that I started improving again.
I agree with bladepeek if everything's doing what it should don't worry you will be fine. Just keep working on form and hitting targets.
Do you have a 28" draw? I think they are overspined for a 45# bow? I think you maybe better with a 1916 or 2016 depending on your draw length. You would still have an arrow in the 470 to 500 grs.And you will get a flatter trajectory and still put you alittle over 10 GPP.I like to work on form but still like to have a closer matched arrow will help your form also.
I wouldn't cut your arrows yet. They are probably on the stiff side for your setup and they will only get stiffer if you shorten them. nothing wrong with shooting full length shafts.
One can only tune as well as his proper form consistency permits.

Just a technicality... but, I think you are confusing GPI (grains per inch) with grains of arrow weight per lbs of draw weight. Assuming you are pulling 28 inches, and the arrow weight is 548 grains, then you are safely within the recommended minimum 9-12 grains per lb of draw weight (you have 12.2) for long life of your bow limbs. It is much better to have a little too heavy arrow than a too light arrow. Also remember that in general, spine stiffness and weight of arrow are two different things.
As a general observation, 2117's are both heavy and stiff for a 45# bow and the drop will be very noticeable beyond 20 yards; as you say that's 12.2 GPP. 1916's are plenty stiff for that head and draw weight, especially if trimmed to 1" beyond your draw length, and will still give you approx. 10 GPP, plenty of kinetic energy on impact without the noticeable parabolic flight path.
