Title: How to become a Traditional Archer
Post by: Pine on March 16, 2015, 01:45:00 PM
This is a good process for getting to be a Traditional Archer .
After you get a decent bow and some arrows , get a decent target and backstop .
Now get a slingshot , ( don't have to be a very good one ) and a bag of marbles .
Now you are all set .
So here is the process ; take your bow and stand close to the target and shoot 5 arrows . Then take the slingshot and shoot a marble in the air at about a 45° angle and watch the marble as it fly's through the air and notice how it curves down . That will get your brain trained to understand trajectory .
Now pull the arrows and shoot 5 more arrows from about a foot further back and shoot another marble like you did before .
Keep repeating this process until all the marbles in the bag are gone .
Now when you have lost all your marbles you will be a Traditional Archer .

Do you realize what you have done for slingshot sales if some of us don't get to the bottom of the post?   :)

On a more serious note: what causes one to stick to traditional archery? I had hunted traditional only one season and had harvested a blacktail and a cow elk. The next season I hunted traditional hard until the absolute last day I could pursue elk. I put away the recurve and grabbed the training wheels. I found myself in heavy timber and brush only 7 yards from my elk. I could not see through the sights due to lack of light and had to shoot instinctive! That was the last time I had the wheels in the field. Traditional bow hunting is the pinacle of hunting experience IMHO!

Graps, we're not crazy. I find the idea of a bunch of grownups running around with sticks and strings when there are much more efficient ways kind of appealing.

Nice shot, by the way   :)

So now I know what I have been doing wrong. I keep buying more marbles.  Besides, having a few days of pre-summer temps, I cut my hair, shaved, I even took a bath, and yesterday was out shooting with no shirt on.  The one cute girl, half my age, that works at Hardies saw me, today she totally hit on me. "You clean up real nice and you're looking buff, I'm gonna ask you out."  She must be a traditional archer, because she has totally lost her marbles. Maybe I should give her some of mine, I have plenty, I stocked up when the Alco store sold out.

You forgot, after you lost your marbles, express interest in other bows, you should try making arrows, inventing jigs and surf classifieds to test your impulses.   :knothead:

I had a sling shot and a bag of marbles, i gave them and the slingshot to my grandson, then turned around a bought a super powered sling shot and a big bag of 3/16" bearings.  I am using it for dove hunting next fall.  When I miss a dove with a shot gun I can never tell where i missed, so I never used it again.  When I miss a flying dove with an arrow, I discovered that close counts on the fun chart, but the dove keeps flying and the arrow may be damn hard to find back.  With the bearing, I may still be able to see how how far I missed, if the light is right, and since i won't find the bearing back anyway, I don't worry about it when I am shooting.  And yes, close will still count for fun points.   When we got our first dove season, I saw a couple of doves coming my way, flying flat and fast.   I gave the lead dove a 15 yard lead.  The arrow was exactly the correct altitude, and flew the exact distance behind the dove as my 15 yard lead.  I gave up trying pass shot doves, they be way too fast for that.  Ground swatting or near ground swatting is a lot more effective, it should work with a sling shot about like a bow.

Half way through your post, I was already trying to figure out what weight marble would give the best balance of speed vs energy.  I was wondering if you have to tune the slingshot to the marble, or if there was a way to tune a marble to the slingshot.  I was wondering if a right handed shooter would be best served by a right wing or left wing color swirl pattern.  And what's the best way to orient the color swirl pattern in the slingshot for the shot.  Do they make high FOC marbles?  What about a true 3:1 ratio marble?  That's probably not possible I guess.  Then I got the end of your post and realized I lost all my marbles a long time ago.

Anybody got some marbles I can borrow?

Scratch that.

Anybody got some marbles I can have?

Cuz I'm sure I'm gonna lose them just like I lost mine.
