Title: coyote question
Post by: tradarcher816 on March 11, 2015, 09:01:00 PM
This ones for those out there that chase ol fang face with trad gear.  How do you guys like to set up?  Tips, Tricks? I've seen a few guys hunt them with rifles.  I even bagged one with a shotgun once on a turkey hunt.  But since moving to my  new house I've seen several out in the woods and would love another excuse to get out and chase something new with my bow. Thanks for the help... and feel free to post any pics.

Get yourself a moving decoy critter and an electronic call. They'll come if they are in the area.

I use a rag or piece of rabbit skin.  Attach that to the lower strand of barbed wire. A visible place for them to see it at a distance  Tie a fishing line on a reel to the wire.  Get the wind right first.   Get in your hide, wait 15 minutes, Start squealing on your mouth call and jerk the fishing line to make it dance on the wire.  He will focus on the wire / rag  and may give you a shot. Has worked for me as a cheap way to get into the sport

I usually always try to set up for a yote in a funnel there pretty darn smart but there curious creatures so there pretty easy to call to as long as they havnt been educated if they have the better at calling you have to be a mojo decoy and a fox pro is always a good choice but something as simple as a rabbit in distress mouth call will ultimately lead old Wiley to his demise good camo scent control and a steady hand and you'll be bagging them n no time I've always noticed early am and dusk are prime time for a yote .. One more word of caution if you have a pack of yotes that don't bother much of anything and you kill them off you may very well end up with a pack that wants to kill everything seen it happen and I mean everything from the dog to every calf in site

As mentioned key is to get them focused away from you.

Same way as when you use a rifle just don't shoot them when you first see them. I do not use a E caller too much trouble. And my decoy if I use one is not in sight till they are close in. Its there to make them stop not to attract them. Seen way too many just sit down at hundred or more yards out just look at the decoy. But also had a couple take my decoy. Any distress sound will work from chicken ,mouse, deer, cat, squirrel and the best is rabbit or dog. (Don't spend too much time in one stand maybe ten to twenty minutes maybe thirty some times. then move on and make sure your stands are 1/2-3/4 of a mile apart or farther. Just go do it and keep trying. Sneeky, sneaky, sneaky. You want to make them think that your dinner so they come to you .

Thumper Dunker please give some of your advice on attractant scents, and getting the shot off with the coyote circling down wind and getting your shot with the movement of drawing. Everyone here has been calling and shooting coyotes with rifles since Sept, as well as trapping so the dumb one are GONE! The few bow coyotes I have taken involved the above with a big dose of luck.
