Well, like many, I have been purchasing preference points to bow hunt in Iowa. From what I understand, I should have no problem drawing to hunt this year.
Both the wife and I have two points already so this year will be our third year.
I have a friend of my brothers that is willing to allow me to come up and hunt on his place near Des Moine..I think.
It is a small place and I wouldn't be able to go up and do any scouting until I actually went to hunt. This is ok for me, but just checking to see what might be out there.
I have never hunted deer in Iowa but would imagine that it would be similar to what I grew up with in Minnesota...I thought Kansas would be too, but not so.
Anyway, would love to find someone with a little more knowledge of Iowa deer hunts and maybe someone or a few to hunt with.
I find deer hunting to be more enjoyable in small groups. It is more fun socializing and it increases the odds of enjoying a harvest even if it is someone else's.
Thanks, bigjim
Good Luck Jim.
PS dont drive before, during or after a football game there. You will be backed up for hours, It is however beautiful country.
I think where you are going would look similar to SE Minnesota.
Jim I'll give you a call later today
There have been changes in the deer numbers in Iowa some areas more than others. One place north of Des Moines, where I shot a 235 pound buck years ago, had virtually no deer sign a couple of years back. There are areas that got hit hard with blue tongue in combination with a couple of hard winters, where deer numbers may still be in recovery. Up here in the northwest corner deer numbers are definitely lower in many places. A number of hunters are heading south to the Loess Hills, where concentrations are never high, but at least there are deer. Where I hunted there was one very large buck, just one, but every hunter in the area dropped in a time or two to have a crack at him. It turned into a real grabass circus.
