I found a year old shed a couple weeks ago.
This morning I saw two nice bucks still carrying both antlers. Guess we still have a while to wait.
-
Haven't found any yet. But with all the snow its kind of tough. Looks like we may get a thaw in a few days. An ill be out there hard
-
Kenny, I hope the owner of that last shed you posted comes by me this November at about 15 yards. And I hope I don't miss!!
-
A buddy and I hunt pretty hard together, and these are what we have come up with so far! The deer with the awesome brow tines, we have sheds from 3 years in a row now!

Man!! You guys are getting it done out there Ron!!
-
Took may lab out yesterday....didn't find any shed's just one old dead head.
-
Mine isn't finding em either, but she keeps me going!! She is 5 month old, maybe she will pick it up.
-
Outstanding stuff......
-
I envy you guys who can fin sheds this time of year. Two days ago, I ventured off the path only to find myself up to my navel in snow :scared:
-
Me too, even with snowshoes I'm sinking up to my knees. No shed hunting here until late April for sure.
-
Great pics guys. I'm gonna love this thread.

We've had a mild winter Kenny...hardly any snow. The bucks started dropping early also, and moving up to higher elevations. Found a few lately at close to 4000 ft, much higher then most years.
-
Here's a few more photos from Blacktail country...
Two years ago I found a giant buck shed that was chewed and a year old. I searched for the other side that year and again last year to no avail. Several weeks ago I was in the same are and found a few fresh sheds, but I spotted something in the wide open, and as I got closer I could see it was a big antler...and as soon as I got up to it I realized it was the mate to the giant from 2 years before! Counting the eyeguard it has 9 points and very heavy!

-
An antler would never make it 2 years here Ron, rodents love em!!
-
Headed out again tomorrow (hopefully). I've been finding a few old ones, but nothing brown. Here in SoCal, the sun bleaches them out really fast, so you have to get on them quick!
-
A few pics of some old ones. Time to find some brown!
This made my day! Black bear skull.

-
Wow Ron, you must have a bunch of deer around to turn up those that quick !
-
Good stuff guys. keep them coming.
-
I love this thread. I've been following deer trails all over in my snowshoes with no luck but it's nice to be outside if your dressed right...

-
Keep em coming. Good stuff right now.
-
I found a BIG 5pt on Feb 15th high on a ridgetop and searched for several hours trying to find the mate. My buddy Kyle found a tall 4pt the same day on the edge of some timber, but we weren't able to locate his match either.

I went back on the 25th to try and find the matches before it snowed. After looking in the immediate vacinity for several hours I went up the ridge into the big timber and started searching. Lots of windfalls and debris on the ground making it almost impossible. I had looped around and heading back down the ridge when I spotted an antler in the faint trail I was following and BINGO! The match is a big 4pt and was a 1/4 mile from the 5pt. Feels good to get lucky now and then!

-
Ron, what species of deer are you finding all these sheds for? I love how dark they are.
-
NICE, Ron!!
-
Do you guys search in particular locations, I can't seem/never have found one
-
I'm far from being good at it, but you have to look where the deer spend their time in Jan/Feb around here. Good eats and bedding and trails between is good for a couple...
Maybe somebody that finds more will help you/us! :D
-
PD29, those are Columbia blacktail sheds from the Cascade Mountains in Oregon. Beautiful deer and bucks that make it to that size are near impossible to kill, they get big for a reason!
Ron, that is an amazing buck! Great job finding his sheds!
-
I was thinking Blacktail but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks.
-
Yes, these are Cascade Blacktail bucks. They spend the summer in the thick timber and higher country and migrate to the winter range when the rut kicks in.

Thanks David...was pretty happy to match up that last set!

One day I strolling along a brushy ridge and came upon a nice antler laying in the trail, when I go up to it I spotted an antler hanging 10 feet away in some willows. I thought it was a matched set, but then I realized they were both left side antlers!

It's good to see I'm not the only person this nerdy about finding hunks of antler! Here are a few more I found the other day. It's been a pretty good year so far. I've found 12 in all now.

Guys this thread is getting me fired up during my morning coffee. Although I do not have many to show for I love looking for antlers with my dog. He found a beautiful half rack 8 a couple years back. Hoping the snow is not too deep after work to give it a shot. Good luck to all- Spring is here (for now at least!)
-
Good Luck Bob. I hope to take a peek this weekend.
-
Thanks Charlie. man does it feel nice to be in the 50s

Put on some miles last weekend. Only found one 2 year old. But still a bunch of snow. But tons of sign. Will be back in two weeks and snow should be gone.
-
Pretty good weekend...3 sheds, all middle aged bucks. Covered 8 miles or so in 2 days. I am sure I walked past some. My pup did some hide and seek with "her" sheds. Showing some interest :)

Man! What's your secrets???? In 20 years of being in the woods, I've NEVER found a single shed. Those of you that do it often with success - what's your method?

Man, you guys have been doing very well this year! We still have a lot of snow but after three days of walking I finally found my first one of the year.

I'll find a peice of a shed form time to time. Dang Squirrels!

I got a chance to do some shed hunting today. I found these just inside some timber next to a pasture.

Kenny- that's hilarious. My dog and I found a fork horn shed this evening and I was thinking the same thing. Yours will make a great bottle opener
-
My pup was there, she picked it up and handed it to me,but can't give her credit for finding it.
Hadn't thought of a bottle opener! Good idea!!
-
Kenny, you may have saved some one a flat tire. That would sure make a hole in a four wheeler tire.
Me, son and grandson went shed hunting last week. Didn't find any but sure found a good looking spot for next season.
-
Yes it would! It was on my farm, so I know whose tire it would be most likely! :D
Here is a visual of how dainty it is, pictured with the shed from the lease found earlier.....

Thanks guys, I've got a couple more sheds, just haven't got pics of em yet. One is a dandy but as usual couldn't find the other half!
-
Some great finds guys! We went out this weekend looking for antlers. And man did we find some GREAT elk antlers. There was one problem with collecting them though. ....
The were still attached to the elk... :biglaugh:
Few more weeks. I've seen them attached into April. Keep them coming

-
Great pics guys! Thanks for sharing. Really has me looking forward to someday sharing my own.
-
Welcome Liz, if you know where they sleep and where they eat in Jan. thru March, look those places and trails between. Good luck!
-
Funny one Mr. Hermon......
What Kenny Said Liz, of course I have found all mine by accidentally tripping over them.
-
Great finds everybody, thanks for sharing. I've found very few sheds over the years, but I've never intentionally looked for them either. I have run across several bucks that were killed the fall before and not found. I found a slammer of a buck, for around here anyway, during the late archery season one year. I know the guy that shot him earlier in gun season, so I cut the head off, and took it to him. From his reaction, you would have thought I gave him a new truck. I really don't need another hobby, but shed hunting sounds like fun, and I do have to do some turkey scouting anyway lol.

Find most of mine walking the travel corridors, but have stepped on my fair share, as well. Found both of these in an open field about fifty yards from the road. I hunted @1/2 mile North of here this year. From bottom to top. Small one is an eighteen month old deer. Put my foot in picture for reference, about forty yards away found the skull. Put it on my cooler for reference @17" inside nine point with a couple broken G3 points, and a nice kicker on right side G2, my guess @6 1/2 Yr old. The tips had been chewed a bit. Someone did not look hard enough in archery season, still had a couple thin pieces of meat on the skull that the beetles had not cleaned up. iPhone pics.
Thanks C-R.

Wow, some really nice finds on here. I hardly ever find sheds, and if I do, it seems to be an accident. I have maybe found half dozen in my whole life.

I've been itching to get out after this thread started, but we can't get rid of our snow.
3 Feet in the woods yet and more coming this weekend.
Maybe in June...

Thanks for the tips Kenny and Charlie. I have a long way to go before my first camping or hunting trip, but I have something to look forward to. :)
