Title: TRYING A TAB: QUESTION THOUGH??
Post by: TradBrewSC on February 25, 2015, 02:17:00 PM
Hey Guys,

I have been shooting a glove nearly my entire trad life (14 yrs), but have decided to give the tab a try and see how it does.

To be more specific I am ordering a bar-bee as i have heard nothing but good things and like the paracord idea.

My question for all of you tab shooters is whether or not you guys use a finger spacer??

I like the idea of less pressure on the nock, but don't know how comfortable it would be or if it would even help.

any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

For me, having a finger spacer is way more comfortable when shooting a tab. It also helps me be a little more consistent with my finger placement behind the tab.

Not sure what a bar-bee is but I'll have to check it out, it sounds cool with paracord on it.

I shoot pretty much with a tab only anymore. I can shoot either way and it doesn't bother me. My Eichler tab doesn't have the spacer.

But, I have this new Bateman tab w/spacer and am liking it real well.

I shoot with Bateman tabs like Wannabe pictured above. Have always had a spacer of some sort but I do not think it matters alot. I even made my own spacer out of oak wood because the tab I was so fond of at the time needed a replacement.

Even with a spacer my pointer finger is right on the nock of the arrow, thats why I do not think It would make much difference for me.

I have been using a tab w/o a spacer for years and prefer it that way, however it's a matter of what works for the individual.

Thanks guys.

I ordered the tab with one, but it is removable with two set screws so I am going to try it both ways.

I am more so curious as to what everyone else's preference was?

When I shot split finger many years ago I prefered a spacer, now shoot three under so no need. The tab your getting is a very good one and I prefer it over the bateman which I shot for a long time three under. Have had my bar-bee for about 6 weeks now and just ordered 2 more for backup and fanny pack so I like it a lot.

I just got a new split finger tab from Safari Tuff and I was not sure if I would like the spacer or not. The Safari Tuff spacer is removable also but after shooting it there is no way I'm taking it off, I think it is very comfortable.

Thanks guys!

When I first started shooting years back I used both types of tabs but dont remember how I felt about either at this point, and of course a tab is not to be found in my arsenal now.

I guess I'm going to have to wait the three weeks for the new one to come in to figure out whether or not I am going to like the transition!

But what I have read so far, it seems the guys that have switched from glove to tab have never looked back.

Cleaner more consistent release from what I hear?

I don't notice any substantial difference in performance whether it has a spacer or not. The stiffness of the leather is a more significant factor for me.

I've shot with and without a spacer. I prefer my Saunders Fab Tab without a spacer. It's a little more convenient (less bulky).

I shoot with glove and tab. I like the glove because I don't have anything flopping around on my string hand when I try to pick up an arrow from the floor, or pull one from a quiver. I do get a slightly cleaner release with the tab, though.

I kept getting slapped in the face with every tab I tried until I read Arne's "moebow" post on trimming it. Works great now.

I like the EW bateman with the spacer in cordovan with the leather loop as shown above.

That paracord deal would drive me batty.
Some people like the elastic band deals too..again the darn thing is "stuck" to ya...I don't like that.

The leather loop is nice. It keeps the tab where it should be but lets you spin the tab around with a flick of your hand so you can use your fingers for other stuff. Then spin it right back around for shooting. No adjusting ie nothing gets out of adjustment.

Cordovan lasts about forever..ymmv..lol

I like the spacer in tabs. Some spacers may need a little trimming depending on your hand/finger placement. I've had on occasion the spacer just touch the back of the arrow nock. If I had my hand/fingers at slightly the wrong angle it could push the nock off the string. Little trimming/sanding and no more problem.
