Title: Single bevel Kill pics
Post by: Jayrod on February 22, 2015, 07:07:00 PM
I have been doing some reading on the ashby single bevel testings and there's great info and insight on the theory of the bone splitting and s shaped cutting I believe they will be in my quiver come fall! Does anyone have any good pics or blood trails they can share I am interested or comments on single bevel?

Don't have any pix, but I've been using Abowyer single bevels for a few years now, not exclusively, but I have killed several deer with them.

In two cases, they were good double lung hits, and the critters died  within 100 yards or less.  In the third, it was a liver, lung hit.  Of course, they would have died just as quickly with double bevel heads with those hits.  Blood trails were adequate, but to my eye not greater than a double bevel two blade would have produced.

That being said, I'll be shooting Abowyer brown bears on my elk arrows next fall.  Because the cutting edge angle is most acute with single bevel heads, it's possible to get them sharper than double bevel heads.

I'm not shooting single bevel heads for their bone splitting capabilities, though I may appreciate that someday.  I shoot them because i can get them extremely sharp.

This was my first single bevel harvest with my Two Tracks Flat bow and Grizzly Kodiak 190 Grain Head.I was impressed to say the least...

You can see the blood spot behind her back from where I turned her over.  It was a 50 yard recovery.  The shot was above heart and through lungs.  They were tore up in a mess when I gutted her.  Reminded me of damage from a gun kill.  I will be using these again this year.  I like the fact of being able to easily resharpen them also.

Here is the blood trail through the corn field...

 (//%5Burl=http://s1321.photobucket.com/user/bisket1722/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-11/CBD17F2C-A9B2-45FF-8A88-1309CAAD076F_zpsruxh22fh.jpg.html%5D%20%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u555/bisket1722/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-11/CBD17F2C-A9B2-45FF-8A88-1309CAAD076F_zpsruxh22fh.jpg) [/IMG]

And one more of the exit hole, it was bubbling out like a volcano...look above the red spot...

 (//%5Burl=http://s1321.photobucket.com/user/bisket1722/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-11/32F679BD-E82C-4E53-A2D5-C79DC6CC8309_zpsxrzhrlxi.jpg.html%5D%20%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u555/bisket1722/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-11/32F679BD-E82C-4E53-A2D5-C79DC6CC8309_zpsxrzhrlxi.jpg) [/IMG]

And one of the entrance hole..looks like more of a slit here until it went through and then it did its damage.

 (//%5Burl=http://s1321.photobucket.com/user/bisket1722/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-11/725CF63B-8587-460A-B650-DF0CEEB38A95_zpst1ritym2.jpg.html%5D%20%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u555/bisket1722/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-11/725CF63B-8587-460A-B650-DF0CEEB38A95_zpst1ritym2.jpg) [/IMG]

I do not have simple pics loaded to add here but I do have a link to a thread that includes some harvests that show the effectiveness of the Abowyer single bevel heads... The buck later on in the thread was quite a penetration test and I'm glad the single bevel performed well! :-)

Something interesting...pix of a pass thru on a pig with a really sharp 4 blade buzzcut
 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/yohon/IMG_1402_zpsg8lvnjhl.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/yohon/media/IMG_1402_zpsg8lvnjhl.jpg.html)
It worked, pig didnt go too far but just the imprint of the 4 blades
Now I wish I had gotten closer pix of this but this is with a KME sharp 155 grain Grizzly, I hope you can see how much wider the cut is and how there is no 1 1/8 slit but a sizable gash it made going in

It's just one example but I found it very interesting.....

Entry High and quartered down through lungs out opposite shoulder. Complete pass thru 15 to 18 yards from 18ft up. Arrow was buried in the dirt on opposite side. No bone contacted but it did exit thru all muscle and elbow area on exit. Sorry no exit pics. Abowyer Brown Bear

I know turkeys aren't what some expect when it comes to penetration test but I hit the wing bone on the way in which as every one knows isn't small. Broke it and buried in the off side wing. It took out the lungs and buried in off side wing. Bird literally flipped over dead. Abowyer Brown Bear.

I don't have any photos that I know of highlighting the entry/exit holes or blood trails, but have been shooting single bevel since the mid 80's with grizzly's and now the cutthroat head noted above with tremendous results.

I took this buck through the liver and lung this last year.  I watched him die at 30 yards.  single bevel Grizzly.  They get scary sharp:

New Brunswick - 400 pounds - 19 10/16 P&Y - down in sight, about 30 yards - no need for a blood trail.

Both were taken with a 190 grain Grizzly broadheads, neither of these needed a blood trail. I have since switched to Eclipse broadheads with a bleeder blade for better blood trails.

This is the pass through MFX Classic. The arrow weighted only 414 with the 125 Helix shot from 46# at 26".

Here is a Doe I killed before the BB. She was less than 10 yards. She ran 45 and died by the tree in the picture.

I've killed 6 deer since 2010 with the Helix. All but 2 have dropped in sight. The 2 that didn't; 90 yards and 140 yards. All were lung shot. All were shot from the tree stand pictured.

Last one. This buck was shot at 8 yards with the same broadhead. He went less than 35 and piled. Every deer I've killed with this combo has been a complete pass through with what many would consider light side set-ups. (bows of 46-47 and arrows 414-460 or so. The Helix has been 125-200 depending upon my tinkering that year.

My own trade point version of a grizzly single bevel. That is the front shoulder entry wound the shot was forward cutting tru some of the shoulder bone.

She broke off the arrow you can see what was left just under the hide on the off shoulder

didnt want to show the other side of this doe. She moved at shot and was quarting towards me. The arrow went in just in front of the shoulder and stopped in her off side femur.
