I look and admire the bows posted here daily and some with the most exotic woods...... I'm curious how many folks have bows with woods native to the area they live in? :)
I have a great northern ghost that the wood came from 25 miles from my house. Found this out from the bowyer that made it.
Waiting for Big Jim to give me the call. Going to use MO native woods...sycamore, osage for the handle...can't decide on juniper or tulipwood for the limbs.
Here's a walnut and phenolic bow I made from MO walnut last year.....

Kirk and Kenny you guys are top notch. Beautiful woods
Kirk, those are just awesome!
Mr Kirk......Beautiful bows as always :)
I like North American woods in my bows. Osage and red elm, walnut and red elm, osage and eastern red cedar are a few I've built. I have a GN Critter Gitter that is osage with hickory and my Whip TD has osage highlights with myrtle veneers.
Had BigJim build me a buffalo bow with some black walnut that came from my deer lease.I resawed a tree left laying on the ground by loggers and sent it to BigJim.

Man those Bigfoot bows are nice.
Beautiful stuff guys!
It's not mine and I don't have pics but saw a Widow that was made from Persimmon, locust and white oak. Great looking bow made from woods that are all food source trees in this area. Pretty cool!
In 1946 or 47, my father went to visit relatives in Newfield, NY where he cut down a walnut tree and had it cut into 3" planks and shipped to Florida to be used for gun stocks. He only cut about a dozen stock blanks from the walnut and another 4 or 5 from birdseye maple-the rest of the walnut was left to air dry in my grandfather's garage. Chuck Deshler at Two Tracks Bows used some of that wood to make this Echo for me. The whole story is here http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=131973;p=1

Gorgeous bows...... Giving me a few ideas :)
I am air drying some mesquite that I hope can be made into a riser. I also have some Carob that is air drying also. Not native but a lot of different trees will grow here in SouthWest with enough water.
I'm really enjoying this thread..... Any pics of Persimmon?
You bet!
One of my dreams is to have a really sweet one-piece recurve made from trees (wood) on my Ohio farm. I've got some great black cherry and chestnut oaks here. Now if I could just find a guy who wants to work with it.
I don't think I've ever seen persimmon on a bow..... Anybody have pics? :)
A white oak/persimmon Black Widow is in here, I was looking at it the other day too.

The persimmon veneers are on pg.2 and I think the white oak riser looks great.
That is a beautiful bow..... Wow :)
I am in line to have a Walnut and Myrtle bow made. looking forward to seeing it.

Future bow from bamboo and persimmon cut behind my cabin on Mississippi River. Going to make a laminated wood bow boo backed and bellied like the James parker now in the pic. Bought that bow as a rough and finished out. Fell in love with the boo then

Charlie, I am pondering to have a Big Jim Buff bow made with the leftovers woods from you bow
:bigsmyl:
F-Manny
Manny, That would make my bow even more special. You now have me more excited than ever to see what creation will come my way...
I have an ash self bow that I made from a tree about 60 miles from my home. Have been cutting Osage this winter and have three staves that appear to be straight grain and with really good growth rings.
Of course will have to wait a bit to work on those. My goal is to kill a deer with all Michigan made equipment. Bow, arrows, feathers and stone head.
and here i thought i had a original idea. i've sent big jim wood for a thuderchild for me. i took mulberry, black oak and plum from my property here in IN and shipped it down to georgia. i got some 50+ year old mahogany my uncle left when he passed several years ago along with a gift of teak from my brother. also some cedar from the old family property. i just gave him artistic license to create a bow both he and i can be proud of. i can hardly wait for the results. i should get the bow next month, lord willing.
That will be a neat bow.... I'm anxious to see it as well :)
