Title: Four Below this morning in the Finger Lakes
Post by: Bobaru on February 15, 2015, 09:10:00 AM
This will teach you to snap shoot, if anything will.  And, better not miss the target.  With two feet of snow, they'll be gone til spring.

BRRRRRRRR!!
34 degrees and rain last night in Montana.
They are saying a chance of snow tonight.
We actually need some snow or we will be burning up come late summer and fall.

Yeah, great picture !, just get out and do it. Its 30-40 below wind chill outside, with 25-35 wind gusts, I'd say it's perfect for some practice !

Common, get that string elbow back, if you miss with that snow on the ground, it won't matter where you draw too.

nj:  Yea, I had a little talk with myself - Just because it's below zero, doesn't give me an excuse for poor execution.

Wow Bobaru! I hope those are electronic heated limb covers?

It's up to a balmy 11 degrees here this morning with 30 mph gusty winds. I'm dreading just going out to clean off the truck!

Yep i feel ya. It was -11F yesterday. I lost a few arrows earlier this winter, butthe snow melted and i found them a few weeks ago.

It is supose to be -15F Tuesday. I think that is where I will call it quits for outdoor shooting. My bare fingers just numb too quick at those temps.

My buddies and I shot yesterday in 26 degrees but today it was single digits with high winds. Think I'll crank up the woodstove.

Here in NW Washington it has been in the 50's and 60's and plenty of sun lately.  My apple trees are springing new leaf bulbs and my grass is starting to grow again.  Ski resorts are suffering with no snow in the mountains.

You guys back east need to send some of that weather our way.

Your brave, Bobaru!  I'm going out in a while (-24 below wind chill).  But I am just going out to the wood shed!  Thanks for the pic.

I can no longer get to my targets in the back yard, the snow has finally won this year.
Probably not even close to what others get, but this is a lot and has been non stop for us this year. No place to put it all. I cant get in the woods to see what the deer are up to, but I have seen NOTHING along the roads around the cedar and juniper that they usually hit in deep snow.
Wonder where they are at this year?
Photo is from an hour ago...still snowing.

We have been low on snow this year, but still getting cold temps. Lots of people are having their septics freeze up doe to the lack of insulating snow cover. I put out hay early this season over the septic and pipes, this has keep us from freezing up. We finally got about a foot this past week so that is good.

Kopper1013, you better get ready.  Last I heard, your guide said to expect anything from +60 to zero this fall on your elk hunt.  ...  Did he say what the wind chill will be at 9,000 feet elevation and zero degrees?  Brrrrrr....

High of -2 here in beautiful, sunny Buffalo, NY.  This has been an ass kicker of a winter.  Never had to worry as much about the roof as I have had to for this year.  The roof rake has assisted in building up the back muscles.  Way to get out and shoot- after reading your post,I feel like if I don't, I will be less of a man! Thanks for pushing us to man up!

I don't know what the temps are, but it's cold and real windy ! So it was my turn to get out and attempt to shoot with good form. I was a little sloppy in the first round, but all shots should have killed deer and larger targets, second round was pretty good and the last was excellent. I guess the colder my hands got the better I shot, but after saying something about Bobaru's  form I felt abligated to get out and try my best.

This is how we ended the day, at +5 degrees.  No idea what the wind chill was.....  Sorry, I erred .... It's negative 5 degrees.  ...  Beautiful pic.

Weather is odd! I live where we should be soaked in rain but, it is low 60's in temp and the sun is out. Folks are running around in shorts like it was summer or something!

Glad I'm not where you are though but, stay warm and shoot straight. TW

Saturday day was single digits with 30-40 mph winds and white-outs..ALL DAY.  -22 + the breeze this morning, got above 0 today but -12 now. Guess if it bothered me too much I'd move.

Nobody has said anything about winter kill in the deer herds out east and I'll bet its going to happen . We lost most of our herd in 2010 and it still hasn't recovered

Deer herds will really take it in the shorts with 2' of snow pak let alone 4-5' especially if the wolf is present.

Northern Mn. has been hit hard the last few winters, this one is rare in Mn.with little snow, but still below zero temps many days. Deer numbers have not rebounded from the 2011 2012 and  2013 seasons.

Still like to see snow though, go figure.

What is that cover on your bow?

Does it serve a purpose other than to knock down the glare?

Cool pic.

Tim Finley - I was thinking the same thing about eastern winter kill.... How many deer can survive in 6+ feet of snow in the Boston area... I understand they will yard up, and imagine some of the urban deer will make it due to snow plows and feeders, but most outside of towns are gonna be hurting...

Terry, the bow cover is an old wool shirt I cut for camo - exactly right, to cut the glare.  I get a little paranoid about that.

-6 when I got to work, warmed up to 9 by noon.
Spent the day with 9 of my guys shoveling off our shop roof. 8 foot drift covered all roof top units.
I am a sorry sore sight right now.
