Title: So my wife wants to start shooting....
Post by: snowplow on February 04, 2015, 02:43:00 PM
Love the idea. I just saw a Bear Panda in great shape for 55 bucks no string. It pulls 25# which seems perfect to start. It also has white glass and really blonde wood. Its a nice looking little thing. Also seems good for my little girl and boy to grow into.

Any thoughts on this bow and this price?

I've spent $55 in much dumber ways.  I'd spend a whole lot more on something which could potentially add to family time enjoyment and heck, another hunter!  haha

Hope you/she enjoys whatever you do find.

I'm totally with that. Just making sure it wasn't junk or something. Its about an hour away.

That's a good poundage to start the wife.  My wife only shoots occasionally and her 58" 3pc is 26@26/28@28 and I'd say its about perfect for her.

Good weight for her. My grandkids all moved into a 30# Browning Spartan when they were 10 so I'm sure she could handle it.

Cool that's one of the main reasons I might jump on this. I dont see many full size bows with poundage that light.

I'd jump on that in a heartbeat. Just check for horizontal cracks in the limbs. Some vertical cracks are ok, but for that price I would at least want to check to make sure it's in good shape.

Either someone found it in their attic and just wants to get rid of it, or someone knows it's not in great shape and wants to sell it a little cheap. Just be careful. (Although at 25# if it did break not a whole lot of damage to anyone shooting  it would likely be done, but you can never be too careful)

My wife shoots a 35 lb bow with no draw weight issues. I like keeping a 25 - 35 lb bow around for people who want to try it out. 55 is a good price for just that.

Awesome! I don't see how you could possibly go wrong for $55!

I know it will never happen, but I wish I could get my wife to shoot a bow!

I shoot 35lb my self, and for target shooting and stumping/roving that is a perfect choice. Kind to the arrows and you can shoot all day without destroying your arms and shoulders. There are too many who talk down on low poundage bows, but as long as you're not hunting they are just about perfect. (IMO)

Sounds like you have a good find here. You are lucky to have a wife taking an interest in your hobby. Good luck to her.

I agree with Trond.

It's a *Bear* bow.  That right there says a LOT about its quality.  If it ain't broke....

It sounds like a good bow, and a better opportunity. I wish my wife wanted to fling arrows with me, but we share a lot of other things, so I don't complain.  And now and then one of her piano students takes up archery with me!

I got my 7 yr old granddaughter a little Maddog longbow. I cut the 1412 arrows to the maximum draw of the bow, so as long as I don't over-draw the arrow past the back of the bow I can shoot it with her.

I have to tell you, that little bow is a joy to shoot. I had to develop a new anchor with the heel of my hand on the front of my chin, but it shoots as accurately as any of my bows at 7 yards.

If that little Bear is in halfway decent shape, I'd grab it!

Snowplow, good for you and the Mrs. Their is good news and not quite so good. When you want to buy a new bow she will say great and I found one also I like.

I take it back it's all good. Have fun and enjoy.

Good for you. get here started out right with arrows that match her draw and the weight of the bow.  My wife took an interest in shooting when she noticed how much fun myself, my youngest daughter and son were having flinging arrows. That was 8 years ago now and she is still shooting and going to the rendezvous with me.
Good luck and have a blast!!!

I got my wife shooting, it's wonderful but got expensive fast when she started hunting! But it's money well spent. One thing I'll suggest, unless you're instructor trained, pay somebody that is to give her a lesson. You probably do things shooting that you don't even realize and will have a hard time trouble shooting her form etc.. Oh and I think that sounds like a great bow to start with!
