Four friends and I made what is turning out to be our annual hog hunting trip to Ft Stewart. We started out at 3 am last Sunday wanting to get to the base so we could get out archery qualification in, pick up our licenses and set camp set up. The Camping grounds on Ft Stewart is great and the price is right at $6.00 a night for military or a Federal Government employee. We made it in time and were able to get thru a few license issues and were all set to start hunting Monday morning. Monday turned out to be a very nice day in the Georgia woods. One thing about the swamp is that there is always something to shoot at. Did a lot of stump shooting the first day and saw a few hogs but no shot opportunities. It is very thick cover and the hogs seemed to know if they stayed close to the cover it would be difficult for us to get off shots. Still a great first day with good friends.
Tuesday was another nice day and there was a couple wild shots sent that failed to hit there intended mark. Pigs were still very hard to come by. The wind howled all day with gusts in the 20 MPH which really put the hogs down. The ones we did see were very skittish. Wed turned out to be a beautiful day and the winds had died down to almost nothing. It was a beautiful day in the woods. We hunted one area in the morning seen a few hogs but no shot opportunities. A local guy had given me some very specific directions to a spot in one of the archery only units so we headed there in the afternoon. I followed the directions to a tee and when I turned left between two ditches as instructed I looked up and son of a gun if there was not a hog maybe 75 yards away rooting in the swamp. I put the sneak on him and got to about 40 yards away when he started moving towards me. I froze and when he passed by at around 15 yards I released the Beman ICS hunter with Magnus Stinger from my RER LX. The shot hit low and tight behind the shoulder and he barely made it 20 yards before piling up. I quickly texted the kill to my buddies so I could lock in the first kill bet. $1.00 X 4. Woo Hoo I'm loaded. The bragging rights over the camp fire will be priceless with this group. I was very fortunate to get this hog when only an hour later one of our party killed a real stud. We were dragging my pig out to the woods when we spotted another pig. My buddy took off his boots and made a stalk to around 35 yards when the hog looked up at him. It was a long shot but he felt good about the shot and decided to let go. That 60# Big Jim Buffalo with 630 grain arrow tipped with a VPA 2 blade hit the hog right in the shoulder and went right thru. That pig ran about 30 yards and piled up. It was funny as heck when he let the arrow go. He jumped up and looked the Fred Eikler yelling I think I got him over and over. Wed turned out to be a a pretty good day as two other guys in the party also took pigs later that evening. The next two days the winds kicked back up and we just couldn't get back on them. All in all it was a good trip. Last year we took 5 hogs this year 4. Not bad for a bunch of Yankees wandering around the Georgia woods. Friday night the winds calmed down and we had some cold beverages over a big old fire.

The tent I have is a" Spring Bar" made in the good old USA is Salt Lake City UT. Best tent I have ever owned. Some what similar to the old Coleman canvas tents but a much better design for put up and take down. It also will with stand great winds.

Hogs seem to be the perfect animal for traditional gear that's for sure. I'm not anxious to have them in my State but it sure is fun to hunting them in GA. Next plan is to find a spot in NC.

I spent time in Ft Stewart during the 1970s and 1980s for a variety of reasons, National Guard and Timber Sales. The place was full of hogs then.
Ft. Stewart has fishing lakes and ponds that are available for fishing and is known for huge bass and panfish. Some of the larger bass from Georgia taken annually come from Ft. Stewart in the 13 -15 pound range. Panfish exceeding a pound and pushing two pounds are possible.
If someone wanted to mix some fishing time with hunting, I'd check into the current regulations.

You are absolutely right. Lots of fishing opportunities on Ft Stewart. There is a very nice lake just across street from the Camp Ground. We always talk about doing a little fishing but just hate to leaving the hunting.

There were a lot of hogs in B13 and B14 on the west side and C14 in the archery/small game side. C17 had a lot of water and pigs were crossing out of there into C14 on the south side.

Tony, I couldn't make it this year. Had a death in the family (mother) late January. Maybe next year for me. Glad you guys were successful and the hard work you did on your shooting paid off.
It was another fun trip and well worth the drive. You really should try to make it next year. We may try to do a 3 day hunt sometime in March. I'll let you know is case you want to tag along. Last guy that commits buys the beer thou:)
