I am curious to know who seems to shoot a longbow better than a recurve. I do, and I can't really explain why. Most of the time I shoot split finger, instinctively, trying my best to focus on the spot I would like to hit and doing my best not to notice anything else (IE my arrow). Lately I've been trying out the point of aim shooting technique for 20yd paper targets and in that case the bow style doesn't matter, although my instinctive shooting is still much better with a longbow.
This question has been asked before, I tend to shoot a recurve better but, you might notice it.
I think I actually shoot a recurve better, but like shooting longbows better.

I hink i get a crisper release from a longbow. It seems like I have more of a back wall vs a recurve which is why my release is better.
But overall, I shoot a recurve better as the weight in the riser makes it less jumpy and the softer back wall turns out to be beneficial as I have more good shots in me with a recurve over a longbow.
Longbow
I love shooting longbows but shoot recurves better.
Longbow for me
Hate to say it, but I shoot recurves better, that being said I don't own one! I just thoroughly enjoy shooting a longbow.
Ditto! My longbow is the prettiest bow that I own.!! that being said, I don't shoot it anywhere near as well as I shoot my recurves.... I have shot my longbow quite a bit, and I want to shoot it well!
Hybrid long bow (Big Jim Buffalo) best of both worlds!!!
Sarrels Blueridge takedown longbow for me!
Bisch
If it has a straight handle grip I'll shoot it better than a pistol type grip, so I guess I would have to say I shoot longbows better, since all my recurves( yes I actually own recurves) have a pistol type grip.
Longbow
Recurve for sure. Haven't spent nearly as much time with a longbow so that might be part of it. As I have posted before, really didn't care for either of the high end custom longbows I've shot. Probably unfair on my part but I have no desire to even pick up a longbow at this point.
Hybrid longbow here works best for me, as said best of both worlds although my static ss shoots mighty nice.
I think riser weight and grip type can play an important part.
Ummm, Uhhh True???? :dunno:
I shoot them the same.
I shoot both about the same, but prefer the look and feel of a longbow. (especially Morrison Shawnee's).
is one more "traditional" than the other? I have heard that some consider a longbow more traditional but I don't get it.
I think if I took my Journeyman riser and shot it once with recurve limbs on it, then again with longbow limbs on it, I would probably shoot exactly the same.
For me, it's all in the riser and design of the bow, not so much what shape the limbs are.
Shoot both the same but drawing up at a target with a longbow just feels better with the lower brace height.
Longbow for me! I started Trad with a recurve. It was nice, but then I shot a longbow and was blown away by the stability of those narrow deep core limbs. Just seemed to be much more forgiving on the shot and just seemed to hit where I was looking like magic. I recently tried a recurve again. Had it for about a month and then sold it and went running back to my Longbows.
When I began thinking about going trad several years ago, I was looking at a Montana Longbow. When I decided a month ago to make the switch, I got a Samick Sage, it has been great to shoot. But I still have my eye on that Bear Montana...Would like to shoot one at some point. I don't know how I would shoot it compared to the Sage..
Recurve
VA, I don't care about tradition at all. Everybody else can go away, for all I care ( OK, be nice). I don't do things because it is cool. Not any more at least.
I have been at this long enough, and soul searched deeply enough to know. . .I feel better when I carry and shoot a longbow. Its a feeling deep inside me. It makes me more satisfied when I walk about and shoot arrows that way. If I myself built the bow and the arrows, it is one step even closer to nirvana.
My recurve is awesome. One of the best out there (in my puny mind). But it isn't a long bow.
CHuckC
To me they are both very traditional, recurves go back to the Old testament and to ancient Egypt and Asia before that. Longbows, well forever ago.
How long is a rope?
DDave
I love shooting my HH but I shoot my Robertson Fatal stik "Majik" the best by far. Followed by aCary Bow tuktu TX.

Always 5' shorter than needed. :D
I shoot a heavy ILF riser best. You can have both longbow and recurve limbs. But nothing beats a nice one piece longbow for pleasure. :archer2:
I shoot higher 3-D scores with a recurve but use a longbow for my hunting and shooting enjoyment.
The bow you put in your hand the most is likely the bow you'll shoot the best...it's really all about repetition.
Kris
The jury is still out....
do longbows tend to draw smoother? Are they more quiet? easier/harder to tune?
It has been so long since I shot the recurves, I don't know if I could hit anything with them or not. So, I would have to say longbow.
I shoot both about the same...but like others have said my choice is the longbow. It just feels right. I prefer narrow limbs and light weight in the hand.
I would've said longbow until 4 months ago.... But then I bought a tall tines recurve!
I enjoy them both but I can shoot my recurves the best. I think for me it's the grip. I can "point" a recurve where it needs to go and the string likes to beat on me with my longbow....(operator error I'm sure) , but that being said I've always wanted to try some of the faster longbows, or the hybrid bows.
Shoot both and some days can't shoot either worth a lick. Like to shoot both and will keep a 'curve and hybrid until I can't shoot anymore which is long time from now I hope.
Longbow or 50s style Recurve.
So far, I shoot my Blacktail recurve the best, but I keep getting drawn to a longbow. We will see I am trying out a new longbow that is showing promise.
depends on which one I happen to be shootng this week...... that said, If I really want screw up my shooting I bounce back and forth the same day......
Generally recurve, but I do enjoy my single longbow.
Longbow
Shoot recurve better, but love the longbow.
I love longbows, I truly do...that said I am better with a recurve. I don't know why but I am
Recurve. But my experience is extremely limited as I've only shot a LB 4-5 arrows. I'm drawn to the aesthetics of a recurve.
Recurve for me. Widow
As long as i have my spines correct I shoot both equally well.
ASL longbows here....

Shoot straight, Shinken
:archer2:
Longbow, if it has a reverse handle.
I think some peoples improved accuracy shooting a longbow over a recurve can be summed up by an article that I read in Traditional Bowhunter sometime last year. The article was called "For the Love of the Longbow" I think and if I remember right it was written by G.F. Asbell. A point that really stood out to me was the geometry of a longbow limb and the draw force curve it exhibits forces better muscle memory. Maybe this is why I shoot a longbow best. I instinctive snap shoot, therefore relying mainly on automatic processing via cerebellum to take the wheel. Stronger muscle memory association seems to equate to better shooting qualities. For me.
This past November/December 2014, I acquired two ASL longbows, one Nirk, and also a HHA Tembo. I have been shooting recurves for four years and I can honestly say that I shoot these longbows better. I don't know why, but I do know that for me these longbows seem to feel more natural and easy to shoot.
I've owned both but prefer recurves.they seem easier to "point" for me.
I shoot some recurves better than some longbows and I shoot some longbows better than some recurves.
Beside liking the hand placement with most longbow allowing me to basically shoot off the top of my fist, for me it's all about the brace height. High brace heights as with most recurves feels clumsy and prefer longbows for this reason.
Neither.
By far, a recurve.
The shorter and curvier the better!

horse bow works for me any how its like shooting a long bow as ya still have to shoot around the d as it don't have an arrow rest i shoot off my hand
For myself I have to always shoot with form that is the most ergonomic for my joints, as in no locked or topped off joints. The final shape of the bow does not seem to make much difference for stationary shots other than I shoot better with a tab for bows under 50 pounds and I can get a shot off accurately, faster with a low wrist grip like a Robertson or a Hill.
Longbow no doubt for me! It's mainly a grip deal though as I just don't like many of the recurves that have high or medium grips. I prefer a much lower grip with a slight dish to place the web of my hand in and just a very slight palm swell but with a straight wrist grip, much like many of the hybrid or deflex reflex longbows being built today.
I think I shoot a 50s style recurve and longbow with about the same accuracy.I really like both style of bows and switch back and forth between the two alot.I dont change anything with my technique when shooting one or the other.I prefer a locator type grip on either bow.So the feel in the bowhand is very close when going back and forth.I like a very narrow and deep cored limb on the recurve.Seems to feel and shoot similar to a longbow.
Good technique is good technique with either bow and the results should be in general compatable. As the long as the bow fits you,the grip jells with you,you got the right arrow setup and the bow is well tillered.
Both. :goldtooth:
I shoot them pretty much the same in terms of accuracy, perhaps a slight edge to the recurve. The differnce is that to get this accuracy with a recurve my draw has to be slow and deliberate with a high degree of consistency in my form, stance, position, etc. With the Hill style longbow, I can shoot fast or slow and not have small deviations in my form and shooting position effect accuracy anywhere close to the way it does when I shoot a recurve. For this reason I hunt almost exclusively with my longbow. I shoot instinctively.
I love the simple look of the longbow but I literally can't hit the side of a barn with one. Even from inside the barn.
I shoot a recurve better, probably only because I've spent more time with them. I'll shoot my longbow a lot this year.
You should do a pole Brent :)
