I have a bow that my uncle built me when I was a kid. He never got "big" building them, just built them for people he knew and didn't charge anything above the cost of material.
Well, he liked to build "D" shaped bows and I managed to keep up with my over the years. It is, still to this day, the QUIETEST and LEAST HAND SHOCK bow I have ever shot, period.
The only complaint about it is it is as slow as anything I have ever shot. lol. Is there any design/bow out there that is comparable to the "D" style bow as far as being quiet and shock-less?
I wish I lived in an area with more trad shooters so I could test more bows..
-
The quietest bow that I have ever shot is one of my 1960 Kodiaks...quiet is far more about the string than it is about the bow...that bow with a B50 string is actually quite loud

Stringfollow, misty dawn by jd berry.
Setback, would be a super d by mr toelke (freaky quiet)
R/d would go to my shafer silvertip
Recurve is lone wolf kayapo by mr. John Maus
All are, extremely quiet and no hand shock and fast enough to have killed me some does.
-
I had a Mahaska longbow 66" 46# @ 28", just 2 small wool puffs on the string. With 525 gr cedar arrow it was almost silent.
-
one of my selfbows with my heavy douglas fir arrows....
-
I have a Big River Longbow that people hear the arrow whizzing and have to look to see if I have shot.
-
My little brother's hickory selfbow 15 years ago, maybe 50 inches log and roughly 30 lbs @ 24. Haha.
-
My selfbow and bamboo arrows.
-
Toelke Super D
and no slouch on speed either
-
Toelke Super D also
-
In general, a bow tuned to the nth degree with a heavy arrow and a properly matched string.
Specifically...a "Hill style" a buddy of mine made years ago. The only bow that style I've ever shot that didn't rattle my teeth. Slower than 3rd Class Mail, but quiet as a mouse fart.
Of my own bows, my selfbows are probably quietest. The BBO I have that Eric Krewson made is fast and very quiet.
-
NM Classic. CREEPY quiet.

My Howard Hill Archery string follow Big 5.
Next is a coin toss with either my Dave Johnson ASL or my 7 Lakes Archery Carolina Night ASL. The DJ is backset. I also have a Northern Mist Shelton that's at the head of the pack also.
All of my quietest bows are of the Hill style. Many of my other bows are quiet also, but the ASL seems to be the best design for quiet. I think a true selfbow would likely be an even better design for quietness as Brock mentioned.
-
It's not a longbow, but the quietest bow I've ever shot was a Fox Breed I used to own. Dead silent with one set of cat whiskers. It was also the fastest bow I have ever shot. Only sold it because it was getting to heavy for my arthritis. Still regret selling it.
-
Absolute quietest ever was a 40# osage self bow that TGer 'burnt' built for me a while back. That bow was absurdly quiet. Like literally all you heard was the string slip off your glove and the arrow swish.
-
Selfbow for sure. Hands down the quietest you'll find.
-
A '59 Grizzly that I refinished. It now belongs to a member of the Bear Archery team that mans the booth at archery events.
The second quietest is a Hill Country Bobcat with static recurve limbs. Very fast too.
-
I'm thinking it's my pronghorn long bow. Thump.
-
I would say my Predators are the quietest. I shoot a lot of Bears, they are not noisy by any means, but none are as quiet as Ron's Predator.
-
Daniel
My Toelke Whip and my D shaped longbow Floyd Oakes in Baton Rouge builds.
Both are SO quiet.
-
Kodiaks around 1959-62 are very quiet as is my Bear TD with Rose Oak limbs and skinny sting, then the Zipper SXT with foam carbon is mouse quiet as well.
-
Thom aka sticksandstones Northern Mist is the quietest bow I've ever shot. A lot of self-bows are very quiet like your uncles Daniel. On performance vs. handshock vs. quiet = A&H. rat'
-
Hands down, my Toelke Lynx!

This for me also.
-
I won't say I've shot as many bows as most here but I will say my slick stick is the quietest I've shot.
-
Jack Harrison HSS, Morrison Shawnee/ carbon foam limbs, Leon Stewart 3pc Slammer, and not necessarily in that order. Since I could hardly hear them, it is hard to choose, but the Morrison is a flame thrower!
-
If have to say my 62" Mike Treadway Black Forest Longbow ... Sounds like an ant fart !
-
17" DAS Gen I riser with short Winex limbs.
-
My 58" Super Shrew with no carbon in the limbs.
-
Black River longbow... All I can say is that you better have a "second chance" arrow close, real close ..just in case you give them a " warning shot".. Don't ask how I know :banghead:

Billy,
mail the whip to me so I can do some testing for myself! :bigsmyl:
-
The quietest is a '62 Kodiak. Just a low thump. Another quiet one according the those I've shot with is a Titan III riser with BF Extreme limbs. More of a tiny "doink" sound.
-
Toelke for me also. Both the Super D and the Whip are extremely quiet...
-
My current Hill bow.
-
I'd have to say it's a toss up between my NM Shelton and my Two Tracks Echo. I favor the Echo because it seems to cast a heavy arrow "harder". When a target is on the receiving end of that arrow there's a big wallop unleashed.....I feel sorry for the target! Both bows are of string follow design and the same poundage. The NM has bamboo core wood whereas the Echo has walnut. Both bows are sweethearts to shoot! Horserod
-
Toelke Super Ds and I still occasionally shoot a Classic Whip H.S. that is also ridiculously quiet. Dan's bow models go through an extensive r&d process where many bows are built, shot and cut up for firewood and an improved bow built to start the cycle again. When a bow is perfected and offered for sale it is going to be not just quiet but smooth and stable and well mannered by any measure. I have owned quite a few and have been to his shop and shot dozens more, they all shoot well, like a Toelke.
-
Thunderstick Moab with hush puppies!
-
My NM Whisper followed by my Two Tracks Echo. There's a reason Steve named it a Whisper. Both are 51#@28 and I shoot 540gn. douglas fir.
-
Daniel, you can shoot it at the North-South shoot in March at CenLA.
-
Schafer Silvertip has my vote!
-
Out of my glass recurves the Whisperstik and Schafer Silvertip
-
Lots of selfbows....Charlie Lamb Sunbear longbow....and for recurves the Fedora 560 Hunter with BowH n dacron string.
-
Sunset Hill
-
EAgleWing Frontier 66 String follow is the quietest I have ever shot. I have shot lots of longbows but this is the first string follow except a yew self bow and Its as quiet as that one.
God bless, steve
-
89 pound Kramer Big 5
-
My three homemade glass/wood lam longbows. One reflex, one flat and one string follow. 66 to 68 inch. B50 strings and heavy arrows. Not very fast, but so quiet there is no hurry.
Also my 66" Osage self bow from bow swap 2013. Came with silencers but took them. Not needed. Bow built by lbullington.

Yep .......... quietest I've EVER shot!
-
My 137# Big River R/D. I never could pull that back to shoot it, pretty quiet that way. :dunno:

-
I shot a Assenhemier recurve, with no silencers, that was the quietest bow I have ever shot.
chris <><
-
My 2 Assenheimer's for sure. not sound at all. my 76 Super kodiak is quiet also.
-
Yup... Daniel... You can have it all with one of these.... The "Flatliner"
Quiet, dead in the hand, and pretty darn snappy too.

Make that 3. Three piece pronghorn 57# and a 750 grain arrow.
-
Sunset Hill String Follow Longbow 66" and 53# @ 27" no string silencers and dead quiet.
-
Bigfoot 3 piece flatliner and Morrison Shawnee with recurve foam core glass limbs. Fast and silent with a heavy wood arrow.
-
I have three out of my two dozen that are extremely quiet: Schafer Silvertip Recurve; Mahaska longbow and Bear Super Kodiak. The Schafer is 55 pounds at 28; the Mahaska and the SuperK are both 58 pounds at 28 inches. I shoot arrows in the 550 to 600 grain range.
-
My Assenheimer.
-
Harry Elburg Condor and Tim Mullins Cajun Hunter.
The quietest shooting recurves I own are the Rocky Mt with Dacron strings.
-
Wilderness longbow I believe it was the white buffalo model it's been at least fifteen years ago that I parted with it. wish i still had it. Great shooter with just a little thump when the arrow left the string. I believe Neil Russell built those bows. Always regretted getting rid of that one.
-
The quietest I've shot is first selfbows followed by the Great Northern Bushbow.
-
I had a JD Berry Taipan with yew cores, I sold a couple months ago, that was dead quiet. I had an Abbott that was super quiet also, and a Robinson Purist that didn't even need silencer, and when I put them on it was unbelievable how quiet it was. I sold it because the grip was to small.
-
Always said my Kempf Stealth T/D was the quietest I owned and shot. However, after shooting Mike Robin's (Bamboo) R/D longbow it is without a doubt the quietest bow I have owned or shot. His Tank Killer model, is also very quiet.
-
It is a 60" Osage self bow I made several years ago. Put on mink wraps for silencers cause it looked good! ;) Sure did'y need the tho.
-
My 70" Bama with beaver balls and 600 grain arrows is the quietest bow I've ever shot, but it's also the only straight limb I've shot.
-
54" Treadway, deadly quiet
-
for me it's been Toelke
-
My Toelke Whip is super quiet....just a hair more noise than my Super D
-
64" Toelke
-
Let's see over the years..... I have to start with the half dozen or so Mohawk Longbows I owned. 62,64,and 66"'s long. Real smooth and quiet especially with Dougie Fir Shafts. My 58" Black Widow PSAII is amazing quiet for a recurve! Surprises the hec out of me. A 1997 Jim Johnson Legend Longbow 62"'s. My 64" Wes Wallace Royal 2 piece longbow is my #1. Without a doubt my all time favorite Longbow. However my Bud Mike Robin just built me a Kititinny Archery Tank Killer Longbow that is DEAD Quiet with Beaver Balls on it. I shoot carbons out of The Wallace and the Tank Killer.
-
I have only owned 3 bows so far, but my vintage 50# Kodiak Hunter is extremely quiet. I didn't notice it until I was standing about 6 feet from my brother while he shot it. I was worried it would be kind of loud for hunting because I had no puffs on the string. When he released the arrow I was shocked because I could barely hear it.
-
For a recurve, I'd have to say RER for sure!
-
My Miller "Old Tom" string follow longbow, very quiet with plain old Dacron string.no silencers on string either.
-
I have a HH Redman that I thought was the quietest bow, until I got my Morningstar from JD Berry. Absolutely whisper quiet.
