Title: Almost scored "ALMOST"!
Post by: BrianO on October 03, 2007, 09:48:00 AM
About 2 months ago I cleared a path and a food plot in the woods where I hunt. There were tree tops and kudzu every where.  I thought "what a perfect oppotunity to use my gound blind".  So about 2 weeks ago I cleared out a little opening in one of the tree tops to barely fit my gound blind in.  I mean you could see it but the back ground behind my blind was bigger than it was.
So yesterday I go out about 4:00 and look at the beautiful groceries that were growing in the plot and hundreds of deet tracks since the rain.  I get all situated in the blind and about 4:45 I caught movement off to my left 1 big fat doe and 3 yearlings at about 16 steps.  My magic number. All I need her to do is take another 3 steps........1...........2...........what the crap! She looked my direction and jumped plum out of her skin.  She took off blowing an snorting in the same direction she had come from.
I know for a fact that she did not smell me and the blind was I belive about as well hidden as you could get.  I thought this is not going to work. So I got out of my blind, took it down and set right in front of a root wad with my bow across my lap. Then about an hour later I had 3 doe walk right toward me then angle off at about 30 yards no shot but I did draw on them several times and they never saw me.  No more blinds for me except for turkey hunting.  Sorry so long just had to share.

Brian,

did you have the window net in place.  I've found that deer do not like the "black hole" of the blind without it.  They will alarm everytime.  Also make sure you put cover on the top to breakup the outline.   The more camo you use with the blind the better.  If done correctly, they will never see it.

Mike,

Yes the screens were in but I didn't have the top covered.  Maybe something I need to look at doing in the future.  Thanks

Like wingnut says, you need the screens and you need to brush it in. Especially the roof line. Try to set it up so that the sun is not shining into it either. Make sure you have dark clothes and a darkened face (mask or whatever) and bow hand. There must have been something about your setup she did not like.

However, some deer just react differently to it than others. I have had groups where one deer did not like it and the others paid it no mind. I have had the same experience in treestands as well.

I would not give up on the blind because of the reaction of one deer.
