Experienced a most personally consummate and enthralling hunt that had virtually isolated my desire for seven years which rose to fruition in 2014; and even exceeded my already inflated dream. I am both most thankful and grateful. Time marches on as I now seem to be aimlessly wandering without a hunter’s dream. The anticipation, planning, envisioning and anticipation must be rekindled.
My only dream remains the same as I long to return to New Zealand. Perhaps I should consider this venture once again as now this desire is being suppressed. Suppression is not the best option since redirection and refocus would be most effectual. Actual practicality has made suppression in this instance endurable.
A different, practical and passion inspired endeavor would be treasure in and of itself.
Please submit your dream hunt and provide some insight as to the personal particulars that have both fed and captivated your desires.

My hunt of dreams is where I get my first deer ever! :biglaugh:
-
I would like to get a Pig..simple dream.
-
A weekend in the country with my wife and scotties... A couple inches of fresh snow in heavy cover and me ready for a nice fat doe, broadside at eight yards... Simple :dunno:
... mike ...

I'd like to take a truly mature (5.5 + Years) Whitetail on a DIY basis here is Oklahoma. Limiting out with a Recurve has always been a dream of mine which I accomplished this year!
Experiencing special hunting moments with the friends and family I love will be the most important thing on my list from now on.
-
I long to return to Alaska for another DIY caribou hunt before I get too old.
My dream hunt would be a trip to Africa or Australia to do about a six week walkabout with tradtusker (Andy Ivy) hunting pigs and scrubbulls.
-
Moose and elk with my longbow.
-
Lots of dreams, some are actually very doable and I just haven't done them yet. I have long dreamed of going on a Mt goat hunt with longbow. That will likely never happen.
Being in the mountains, way up there, overlooking the world, and sneaking toward such a beautiful monarch of the peaks, with naught but a stick and string, meaning I either win (get VERY close) or he wins.
Kill or no kill, it would be worth it if I was able to get close enough for increased heartbeat and the inner thrill of having truly hunted.
However, on the up side, lots of other hunts will happen.

I am already living a small part of my dream by living in Montana, and getting to hunt a variety of animals.
My true dream is to take the Super Slam with my recurve, or at the very least the Super Ten (one subspecies of all the different NA big game animals)

I'd love to hunt Moose in Alaska, Elk in Colorado, and Bighorn in Montana.
I'd settle for any one of those just once in my life :bigsmyl:

Hunting pigs with my son.....
-
New Zealand, red stag and fair chase. I just think they are such a cool animal, their sound, their look the country they call home. I hope someday it will happen but i think I could settle for a mature whitetail buck from the ground.
-
Moose or caribou.
-
Moose hands down !!!
-
Ron, it's to bad you and I live on opposite ends of the country! Would love to share a hunt with ya.
-
my dream hunt right now, is a fly in paddle out hunt in the wilderness of northern BC, canada.
for goat, moose, bear and elk!
about a good 2 week expedition, and could easily make it longer!
-
My dream hunt would be to share a hunt with my father. He never hunted and he passed back in 2001 when I was 24.
But I would love to go chase Elk on the Rockies
-
Alaska moose for me.
-
Mule deer and antelope in Wyoming-simple man, simple needs.
-

That would be a spectacular journey, but you'd best take the big canoe. :bigsmyl:
-
Mostly I AM living the dream, but, to add to it,...how about a bison (as long as I had help!) and a brown bear when I find someone I trust completely with a big bang stick to back me up.
I'll be chasing Mt goat this fall with a stick and string, moose also, black bear and deer on Shuyak Is.
:bigsmyl:
-
My fantasy critter would be a leopard! With what other animal can you literally "pick a spot" to shoot at?
-
I'd have to say my dream hunt would be a week "in my backyard" for moose, elk, caribou, black bear, sheep, goat, and mulies.
Wil be close to that this fall when I head up to northern bc for as many GOS hunts that I can handle. Biggest problem is hauling all that meat out on my back. Any takers to be a pack mule?

Let me know when you go. ;)
-
What are the requirements (guide or not) to hunt in BC? For a US citizen.
-
Take an Oregon Blacktail buck with my Blacktail bow. A nice 6 X 6 Colorado Elk. Moose.
I think Cape Buffalo or Water Buffalo is off the table. Perhaps I could work up to 75 or 80 pounds. We'll see.
-
My dream hunt is to call in an Alaskan Moose in full rut and take him with a long bow. Unfortunately i'm afraid i'll never get the chance. I've got contacts up there, and could put the trip together no problem... But i just can't justify the expense with so many other things going on....
But it's still my "Dream Hunt"

For big game you need to be with a guide, if related to someone the could use the hunter host license. Huge problems between resident hunters and guides right now. But fujimo and I would love the extra hands for small game and packing. ;)
-
I was a registered guide in Alaska for many years but would love to hunt in either BC or the Yukon.
-
That's easy- I would love to go on a wilderness hunt for Elk and high country Mule Deer. Walk in, camp out for 2 or 3 weeks and walk out. Take a couple good friends with me. Purchase a good camera and bring it too, but other than that leave electronics behind. Bring minimal rations and use my bow to procure meat to roast on the campfire.
-
I would still love to connect with an elk. I have chased them for many seasons and have been close, seen them, had my heart pumping, but no elk with the bow yet. I would like to get this elk with a longbow while my knees are still in the game.

yup Rick- thats a lot of meat :D , but we know how that goes-
thats just the tags that are available over the counter- no draws, no limited entry etc- if i got one out of the bag- i would be ecstatic- if not... an awesome trip!!
-
My biggest dream hunt would be water buffalo with a longbow in Australia. I know that will never happen but dreams keep us going
I'm actually going on another dream hunt this fall for moose in Alberta. One I've always wanted
I have been lucky enough to do a few hunts that 20 years ago I never thought I would. Took 2 caribou in northern Quebec right before that got all screwed up, black bear in Alaska by spot and stalk, a 410# black bear in Ontario , mountain lion in CO. Not as much as some guys, but I feel lucky to have those
-
hey wood moose- tried to pm you- says your inbox is full- i know mine gets full, but there are correspondences i dont want to lose- so i am always on the cusp too.
will try e mail
-
I would have to say mine is either hunting elk in New Mexico or Wyoming or moose in Canada.
-
Tom, when you're ready for the big bang stick backup holler, I'll gladly back ya up! I've had enough bear shooting unless its a blackie for the freezer! That or you need to smear honey on someone and let them run, I arent afraid of no bears LOL!
I'm with Tom, I'm living it! Its been a dream since I can remember, and its now in my front yard. I'd like to visit Nz and Africa but if I never do I'm just thankful to be able to look out my window knowing I'm here. Lord willing I'll be looking forward to more adventures in the future! You guys who want it, its easier than you could ever imagine with a little planning!
-
I'd be tickled with many hunts but Bighorn sheep in Montana is at the top of my list.
-
Alaska or the Yukon for caribou and grizzly. After checking my bank account, I will settle (happily) for elk, deer, bear, and the occasional foray for hogs.
-
Red Stag would be my dream hunt but I would be thrilled with any big game hunt
-
I think I'm with Chuck on this one - mountain goat would be the dream, but I'm not sure if I'll ever be in a position to make that one happen.
However, a realistic one is just to hunt some elk and mule deer out west. I'll get that done some day.
-
Every year I put in for elk, moose and sheep and then dream. Never been drawn yet, but then I load up all my stuff and go hunt elk in CO with my son, then come back and chase deer locally. It could be a lot worse, right?
I'd love to hunt any of the above plus a bear hunt where there are some big ones.
-
Elk in ID.
-
High on a mountain with a Rocky Mt goat within 20 yards.
Alaska after moose or caribou.
Unlimited time and money to hunt, #1.
:bigsmyl:
-
Mountain Goat also.
I hunted Mountain Goat 33 years ago in Atlin, British Columbia at Lewellyn Glacier. I still remember every second of that hunt. I am 60 and my short and long term memory is going, but that hunt is burned into my mind.
We hunted a mountain overlooking the glacier. It was amazing. We spotted the goats from quite a distance. We climbed over the mountain from the backside and came down on top of the goats once we came over the summit.
As we climbed the mountain I thought I had to be crazy paying to do this. It was a tough climb. At times I thought the guide would have to hammer in pitons and lower me a rope. He climbed that mountain like it was a walk in the park. I remember having to grab small tree branches growing straight out from the rocks.
It was a very difficult hunt but the most rewarding hunt I had ever done. If I had the resources I would be a Goat, Stone Sheep and Dall Sheep hunter.
-
A home on a couple 200 acres or so of whitetail habitat that I groomed myself. Hunting right out the back door. Good neighbors. Bordering a large track of public land would be nice for days when I want a longer excursion. maybe a military facility nearby where no hunting is permitted so the overflow of deer come to my place.
That would keep me happy.
Tedd
-
My Dream hunt would be a Red Stag with my recurve! Though I'm waiting for my recurve to come in the mail.
-
dreams consist of traditional Saskatchewan slam, but over that would be some sheep hunting, mtn caribou.
To be honest to be able to do these hunts is more important than the killing for me.
-
My hunt of dreams?
I'm still working for a deer or pig,
BUT...
Since we're talking "all-time dream hunts" here:
#1: Kodiak or grizzly at close range.
Other than that,
To take a mountain goat, elk, moose, wolf, or mountain lion in an area where satellite phone is the only option, LOL, would be pretty dang neat.
I agree, the killing itself is just the end result, what I really really want to experience is the pursuit while in the remote wilderness away from civilization where I can rough it and there's that little surivival aspect thrown in :D
I've kinda always had the idea to save the Kodiak or Grizzly hunt for when I'm at the end of my days and kinda ready for the happy hunting ground LOL if you know what I mean :biglaugh:
-
Brown bear in Alaska.
-
For all you guys that want to hunt brown bear: I used to work with an old guide out of Cordova, AK, that would often wonder how an archer that could "spit" a goose at 50 yards every shot, miss a brown bear at less than 10 yards. Really brings to the forefront what a MENTAL game archery is.

Mine used to be to go moose hunting, but the way things are and keep going I'd really be happy going on a pig hunt or even for sage grouse up in the mountains in the fall when the aspens are a miraculous yellow. Spruce grouse up north would be awesome as well! Seems nice anyway and make for some great memories and pictures. I don't know that I'll ever have the means for moose or elk.
-
Bison.
Mid 1800's with my GGGrandfather!!!
But I'd settle for a BnC moose with my recurve!!
-
TTT
-
Mtn Goat in Alaska. or dall sheep in Alaska. Hawaii is wonderful, but sometimes I just want to go back home!
-
Dream hunt would be a leopard or tiger !
You guys did say - Dream.
-
New Mexico ,to just see or hear an elk would be fine or just smell the land and plants ,the bull elk at 20 yards would complete that dream.
-
Rocky Mountain elk hunt if my health was a tad better.
-
Caribou anywhere
Terry
-
Mt Goat to fulfill a promise I made to my self.
-
Go calling for a wolf. And go to Africa and call for jackles and hyenas. And with back up call in a Russian brown bear. And just to get any legal deer.
-
Just a question, why a Russian brown bear? Calling in coastal brownies in Alaska is a pretty serious adrenaline rush! They often come in like a starving coyote and sound like a freight train coming through the brush!
-
Newhouse....sounds like you might have a story or two that we need to hear!! :dunno:
-
Colorado elk with my son
Or a big bear with my son,
Or a moose with my son,
As long as we had somebody to haul it out for me. Backpacking and hauling meat out probably is not an option for me. A float trip would be fun, in Ak.
-
A bull elephant with a recurve. Ever since I saw the video of Fred Bear taking one with a single arrow from a 75 pound kodiak it has been my dream hunt. I'm going to be building my "elephant" bow sometime in the next year and it will probably be around 90@31 but it isn't likely it'll ever see africa, so it'll have to be satisfied with whitetails.
-
A DIY elk hunt in Colorado while carrying my Gamemaster Jet.
-
Kodiak island blacktail hunt.
-
Sheep are out - too expensive.
More practical would be moose. Feeling pretty ineffective as a Bowhunter these days. Last day of turkey today and I only hunted here at home one morning. Did bow kill first Merriams on April 14 though.
-
I'm living the dream.
I'd like to help my brother get a Moose tho. He's been here twice and can come again next year.
-
I've had lots of opportunities to hunt all over the world over the years. But my hunt of a lifetime will be when I can be there when Jason gets his first bull elk and when my grandson Henry goes on his first hunt with his bow.
Mike
-
Alaskan Brown Bear, selfbow, no gun back up!
Thanks,
-
Caribou out of Kotzebue -
-
No dreams anymore, only memories.
-
A giant wilderness Canadian whitetail ! Too bad a man can't do a DIY hunt in Canada. I'd settle for a wilderness DIY hunt in the northern 48 though, like the boundry waters or something.
-
There have been several Dream hunts already and they lived up to my expectations. Two that have been on the dream hunt list are Dalls Sheep (after reading Jack O'Conner's accounts in Outdoor Life) and Red Stag.
Sheep are out now. At 67 neither my body nor my wallet is in shape to do sheep.
Stag on the other hand is still a full on glimmer. I'd love to chase them in Scotland if or when they allow bow hunting, or Eastern Europe. Been to Argentina once for birds and would love to go back for Red Stag. Last and likely the most expensive would be New Zealand. A couple of months roaming the countryside fishing, hiking and ending with a Red Stag hunt during the roar would be superb.
Oh wait, forgot about Alaska. Always been on my dream hunt list and I've never been - yet. Moose and Caribou float hunt - yep.
-
moose float hunt trip this September- and moose and caribou( maybe goat too) next september.
hunts that i have been planning for a few years now!!
-

I'm not sure. Really any big bear would be a kick in the pants.
-
If you ever get a chance to call brownies, I suggest a good backup. I'm sure you've had coyotes in your lap before. I can promise you that you DO NOT want a hungry growler that close without a good bangstick, sometimes not even then! The traditional archer is best served with ambushing a brown/griz on a salmon stream, or spot and stalk in the berries. Try not to attract attention to yourself!
-
I have a few animals that haunt my dreams. I've missed an Elk and an antelope and those are amazing creatures.
There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that gets me going like a big 'ol sexy bull moose. I've been at 10yds from my dream animal without a tag in my pocket with him grunting his fool head off. Plus, that is the only animal mount that my wife says that I can put upstairs on the fireplace.
-
Gosh where do I begin
Elk
Sheep grand slam.. I would love to be back in Alaska on a rare sunshine day chasing a Dall sheep
Argentina duck
My idea of a perfect day...
Flooded timber hunt - full limit of mallards and Woodies with a banded black duck in the mix..
Take a nap
Work out ... Lunch consisting of elk flank steak sandwich
That afternoon massive 10 pt whitetail in rut via the ivory hunter followed with either venison chilli or venison bacon wrapped jalapeño tenderloin and sleeping in front of the wood burning stove

New Zealand is not as unattainable as you'd think. I spent two weeks in NZ in 2015. Hunted Sika DIY on north island and reds guided on South Island for less than what a western guided elk would cost, including airfare. Although I hunted with my bow success came with a rifle so can't post any pics. Crown land is almost free to hunt. As long as you can settle for something less than Friends monster, you can hunt reds on the cheap in NZ.
-
10days canoe trip through the Top End of Australia, chasing pigs, scrub Bulls, and fishing for Barra. It has been done before on the Mary river by some well known aussie bow hunters. It is a Total outback adventure.
I am currently planning this for 2018 with 5 mates, 3 x2 man canoes, it will take considerable time to acquire permissions from land owners as the trip will span about 100km by river.
-
Pete McMiller,
NZ Red stag is easy to do on the cheap. For the price of an airfare and otc license you can be hunting public land and staying in their backcountry huts.
Haydenj7,
Would love to do a Northern Australia canoe trip, will be done the next time my mates go down the Mitchell, I'll be there.
I'm also keen to do a float trip down here in Victoria for Sambar and trout. I have another mate who tells me of canoeing down and picking up a pair of 30 inch casties out of the river and 5lb trout in an isolated stretch of river in the high country
As for my dream animals , I've decided to bite the bullet an go for Tahr this year. Will be a spring trip and can't wait to join the likes if Clint and Mark in hunting these mountain monarchs.
Banteng are another animal I can't get out of my head and will get done in the next few years.
In North America, Elk and Black Bear are at the top. Coues and Aoudad are also very strong desires to pursue .
Can't wait to get out there.
-
Got two. Alaska for brown bear and moose;buffalo with a longbow.
-
I just like to chase the whitetail deer with friends. No big dream hunts here
-
I am going to do a fly-in to Cold Fish Lake in the Spatzisi before I turn 40. Still have a couple years to pinch pennies. Don't care what I hunt once I get there, sheep, goat, caribou. the quarry is truly secondary to the experience of walking the same trails as Fred.
-
Any hunt with my late brother. He passed while planning a trip to our camp during the 2014 whitetail season. It would have been his first season with a longbow after a few years off from hunting in general.
Hitting a big caribou migration would be incredible as well, since I'm dreaming...
-
I have always thought that sheep hunting was greatest I could ever do. That would truly be a dream hunt for me. Dalls or Stones always enthused me. But that will never happen.
I have always thought that on of the most magnificent trophies that I could possibly achieve is a big muley buck. I think those horns are awesome.
-
Lots of them for me. I'd love to go back to Africa and suspect I will one day. Luckily for me a lot of my dreams involve whitetails. I'd like to have access to 500 acres in Iowa for at least one full season and be able to hunt as many days as I want. That one will probably have to wait till retirement. I'd also like to take a B&C whitetail on public land. THAT one may be getting close to impossible these days.
-
Would relish an opportunity to actually return to the North Island.
My most unlikely dream fulfillment would to be harvest a superb whitetail from my own developed property and from the ground.
Hundreds and hundreds of hours of love in planning, strategising, labor and in the field have provided tremendous reward.
The score is merely a reflection of the challenge. I have only seen two booners in Kentucky and neither time was I actually hunting whitetails. Perhaps, it will miraculously occur as a fortuitous culmination of circumstances since at least two booners are harvested yearly in near proximity.
The burning flame of desire of just taking in the gifted full hunting experience alleviates the desire to having to loose an arrow. The seemingly unrealistic endeavor provides ample opportunity to return to the field?
Did pass on three 3 1/2 yr olds this past season at ~15 yards and had two 4 1/2 yr olds at approximately 35 yards...well beyond my effective hunting range.
-
At my age (will turn 70 in Nov) most of my dream hunts have been discarded, or turned into memories. These days I dream of hunting whitetails on our property in NC and chasing pigs and javelin in Texas. I guess I can't complain as my longbow and I have shared some great days afield from Africa to Alaska with lots of stops in between.
-
To Hunt with my father (which never did) and brother
-
For me the dream is less about what I hunt and more about where I hunt, perhaps a strange thing to say but to have the opportunity to hunt anything with a bow in New Zealand, Scandinavia, or Peru would be extremely cool.
-
all elk or bear :archer:
-
Interesting thread. This will be my third response over the years.
Some of my dreams have been fulfilled. I’ve hunted big bear in Manitoba and was fortunate to take a Pope and Young bear. I’ve hunted elk with my son in Colorado a few times. Also got a chance to elk hunt in ND.
Time may be running out, but I still look forward to a sheep, moose, or antelope hunt in ND. I am looking forward to a whitetail hunt in Iowa perhaps next year with an old friend, if we can get drawn.
I’d still like to try pig hunting, but haven’t been able to make it happen yet.
If I won the lottery, I’d like to hunt with Ben Maher, on the other side of the world.
Anticipation is a wonderful thing.
Gary

Bull moose.
-
I've thought about this subject for a couple days now and have to say after 58 yrs in this game most of my dreams are memories. My dream hunt was in 1979 to BC where Fred hunted with Bill Love, Bill was still outfitting then and my hunting buddy and I booked a 14 day Moose, Mountain Goat and Caribou hunt with him staring Aug 15th.
The trip of a lifetime, I shot a P&Y moose the first afternoon! It was a great start but being able to sit around the supper table for the next few days with Bill relating tales of Fred's adventures was really an experience. My buddy shot a P&Y caribou next and a few days later I got one also. We both passed on Mountain Goats that our guide said weren't big enough.
We got into situations that were quite interesting, walking on a grizzly trail in the dark, jumping from one cliff to another and almost crashing a boat into a huge boulder come to mind. One day after spending a night on the open mountain we had to climb some cliffs hand over hand with our bows over our shoulders to get within shooting range day of 2 goats. Ater the goats left we couldn't climb down so up we went again to the top and circled the mountain to get out.
I've been fortunate to be able since then to hunt from Alaska to Newfoundland and in between and from California to Mississippi to Washington state to Michigan and one trip to Africa but have never found any place more beautiful than that area in BC.
I guess my dream hunt now would have to be for a Big bull elk, I've hunter elk 29 times but they still get me going.
-
In my hectic life, full of work and family obligations, every hour hunting is a dream.
-
Wake up early to bacon, eggs, and hash browns. The weather is mild and the skies are clear. I'm surrounded with loved ones and heading into pristine wilderness. With my bow in hand and loved ones in the truck we go out to watch the sunrise through the trees. The action is good and we all get quality meat. Prayers are sent up, the fire is stoked, and we eat like kings in the company of loved ones with a loyal K9 companion at my side. The species doesn't matter. The location doesn't matter. The side or class of the animal doesn't matter. But the time spent with and memories of loved ones does.
-
Mule deer has always been up towards the top of my list. While I wasn't successful on them this past fall I will be trying again at the end of September and potentially again in October. While I'll more than likely never be able to afford a sheep hunt, I would love to do one someday and will buy points in the lower 48 just on the odd chance that I get lucky and get drawn. Another would be a michigan bull elk. I don't know whether anyone here has taken one with a trad bow, and there are some big bulls running around up here.
-
Ive already been on my dream hunt I shot two big bull caribou in Quebec and I went to Africa something Ive wanted to do since I was a kid . I had a list of 5 animals I wanted to shoot in Africa I thought if I got one or two I would be happy especially if I got a Gemsbok . I shot all five on my list and killed an extra Gemsbok .
-
The next one
-
Now hoping one day to experience the reality of pursuing Black Buck.
-
I have max points for both Tule Elk and California Big Horn in California ether one will be a dream hunt.
-
Big horn sheep.
I snoozed too long. I hope they are in Heaven.
-
Doable and far more important.
Deer hunt again with my best friend since 1975. My buddy was diagnosed with cancer again. If chemo will work he has, according to doctors, 1-2 years. If chemo fails this time... 5 months.
