Title: Acorns! Acorns! Acorns!
Post by: mmgrode on October 02, 2007, 09:20:00 PM
Hey Gang,
I just got in from the field(man, it's nice to be out there!) and almost can't believe it...there's acorns everywhere! I mean EVERYWHERE!! There were times when I had to watch my step so as not to have my legs fly out from underneath me.     I thought the crop would be bad this year with the dry summer, but was surprised to see so many.  That's now become part of the difficulty with hunting where I do; there are oaks all over the place and this makes the deer very difficult to pattern as the oaks are distributed quite evenly.  Anyone have any advice on how to hunt areas with oaks/acorns all over the place? Do I need to get right close to the bedding areas?  Cheers, Matt

That is the way it is here in Michigan as well.  It has been 5-6 years since I have seen so many.  I am also seeing more deer sign as a result.

Yeah, this is definitely good for the deer this year.  Anyone have any advice on how to hunt them in these conditions?  Thanks, Matt

mmgrode:

Find a bunch of white oaks.... that is the "candy" of the acorns.  They will seek them out and eat on em first.

Good luck.

Lots of acorns here in Alabama as well. I suggest trying to find a beding area and hunt trails leading to the acorns. Also, as suggested above, certain types of acorns(white oaks here) are favored over others. Seek out those trees and you may be into deer more often.

Makes for tuff hunting. They like post oak an white oak acorns the best.I have seen deer literaly not get out of there beds until you nearly kickem when they have this much food. They can walk forty yards eat and lay back down and will when there is lots of acorns.I would get close to a bedding area that has acorns and wait for the rut or move in as close as possible to the bedding area.hope one provides a shot.If you get some rain the acorns will start to rot and help you in late season.good luck.

I started out wondering where all the acorns were. This kept deer concentrated on specifc areas. Now there are acorns falling like rain all over the place. Have not been able to get on the deer close enough for 2 days. Also took a large acorn on the head from about 30 ft up. I had a knot on my head all day.

yeah, few and far between here in Central GA as well... Its either feast or famine... too few, they don't go to far or seem to be in any hurry as there are acorns aplenty... or so few, that they seem to not even bother with getting to em...

I've found hardly any white oaks dropping and those that do, have very few...

On the plus side, during these large-mast years, you stand a good chance of shooting larger bodied deer.
