So I went for my last hunt tonite in the off/on drizzle and sleet. Never rained enough to get me wet, just now and then drops or pellets.
About 4:15 2 does crossed the strip of beans I have planted in my CRP about 200 yards away, ate a few and disappeared in the tall grass again.
All quiet til about 5:00 when I heard something and looking over my shoulder, a buck! Actually 4 bucks and an old antlerless bony deer(a shed buck?)
They marched up the fence/tree row behind me on the neighbors side and turned in the trail to come to the left of my stand about 8 yards out.
First buck is a 100" 8 point, he stops and nibbles on a locust pod there broadside with nothing but air between us. 2nd buck is about the same except some crooked points. Third buck is a 6 I think, I had my eye on the 4th buck , a dandy 10 probably 135- 140" estimated.
The first buck is at 8 yards broadside when the big buck scatters the next 2, they scoot downwind about 15 yards in the treeline brush where the big one stops and gets nervous and boogies out in the field behind about 20 yards.
No panic, just the big buck instinct I guess. None of the deer are too concerned, but they head across the field including the 8 that was so patient waiting for me to shoot, who jumped back across the fence when the others scooted out in the field..
Maybe I was greedy waiting on the big one, or maybe just wanting to see what the 8 grew into next year.
As I watch them walk across the wide open beanfield, I wonder how do they always know something is up? Maybe an errant sniff of human? Maybe a feeling something isn't right?
I took my last shot at a bare patch in the snow with my judo just because, and was delighted to find it was true!
It has been a blessed season and I thanked the Lord and the bucks as the light faded....
Hope everyone has a great 2015/2016 season!

Very nice ending to a great season.
Yes sir , everyone have a great new season....
,,,Sam,,,
Nice Kenny....I wish everyone the best in the new season too. Come on opening day!!
Sounds like you had a great season Kenny. Now it's time to not-so-patiently await the arrival of the upcoming season opener...
Yep, they just seem to know, somehow!
Bisch
Great story felt like I was right there with you best of luck next year everybody!
That's a great way to end a season.
Nice post Kenny.
It's getting to be about that time to pull the stands, put the broad heads back in the box and the camo back in the Tupperware containers. I've started to summarize my pictures from the year, beginning with May and the first summer shoot. Yep, it's been a good season.
Never shot a deer this year. Can't remember the last year that I went without taking a deer but for some reason this year was most memorable. Maybe just getting older but it really didn't matter if I took a deer. The memories are endless. I saw a lot of deer and past on a few for various different reasons. It' was a another great hunting season and looking forward to this year.
Ron
Great Summary Kenny. You had a good year this year.
Here's to another in 2015! :coffee:
Good read Kenny, great way to end the season!! Some day hope to come to the lease and share camp.
Not greedy at all buddy. You just know what you want and I doubt there's too many here who would not have done the same.
As you know my season was over on December 10. I'll be starting the "last leg" of my get well program this coming Wednesday.
Until the next hunt we have the memories of the last hunts and maybe that's what it's really all about.
Just having a buck of that caliber, that close is a blessing. Cool stuff
Good stuff Kenny. Its been to long I need to come visit you.
Sounds like a great day of hunting. Some day I will get back to the beautiful midwest to hunt -- the midwest is where I grew up. The stories take me there and I thank you for that.
Good read Brother! We still have a week left before I am pondering the same thoughts.
A nice evening hunt to end the season. Just seeing deer like that keep us thinking of the possibilities of next season. Thanks for sharing your memorable hunt!

Yep.... :campfire:
Thanks for sharing your last hunt of the season Kenny. Great way to end the season...I don't think greed was a player....you just wanted to kill the right one in the group. They do have a way of making us second guess our decisions don't they? Have a good off season getting ready for that next hunt!
Kenny, great parting shot!! From the first hunt to the last of the season I love trying to figure out those wonderful whitetail. And they win the majority of the time. And I can't wait to go again. Hope to see you again this fall and "strategize" on how to get a shot at a big un.
Already got my weapon cut out. Now to sand the lams and glue up. Plan on hunting with a 62" bow. Inspired by guess who. Limbs are some of that spalted hack berry.
Thank you all!
I would love to hunt with every one of ya, but with near 43,000 members, I may not have time.... :D
So far, every TG member I've met, I'd share camp with!!
And David, are you building one of those like the one you sent me a sketch of? I have been thinkin of going down to 62" also....
No Kenny, it is same design as my 58". Longest bow my form will make is 62".
Can't wait to see it!!
Well Done Kenny!
I recently saw a documentary about the electro magnetic field our beating heart produces that can actually be picked up by other animals. Perhaps this is what the "6th sense" of a deer is picking up?
What ever it is it is truly amazing to me.
It is amazing for sure!!
Nice arrow Kenny. What is it?
Good story too ole boy... :)
Great story. I ended up dry again this year. Passed on 2 fork-horns and a big doe who had two really young fawns with her. Those were my only opportunities this last season. I did the same thing you did, only I picked a bright yellow leaf against a snow covered sand bank. I thinks its like counting coups - a way to say "I could have had you if I wanted".
Roy, its just a 35/55 GT blem with real turk feathers and a Judo.
Ron, that is exactly what it was, coulda filled my 2nd buck tag, but wasn't gonna unless the bigger one came thru. Which he didn't!
:D
I almost got another final shot after bow season closed. Got a trail cam pic or 3 of a pretty kitty before season closed. So went and set up before daylite one fine 17* light wind morn.
Called the kitty to 40 yards and 3 yotes to 50 or 60. A fine, fine day...
Here's the kitty pic, season ended before I could go again.....

Cool stuff. That's a real pretty cat.
