I am trying to plan a trip to one of the many wildlife management areas in Georgia. The regs are a bit confusing. Can I not use broadheads during small game season? It looks to me they don't want bowhunters during small game season hunting hogs. Can somebody please enlighten me.
The GA DNR regulations section of FAQ regarding hunting hogs on WMAs states that, "if a WMA is open to small game, then you may only use legal weapons for small game if you intend to hunt for feral hogs." However, the next line says, "Muzzleloaders and archery equipment are legal during small game and turkey seasons."
I have to believe that "archery equipment" would include broadheads. The GA DNR would not want us hunting hogs with judo points or blunts.
That's what is confusing to me the regs state that during small game season no broadheads. But I found something else that stated if hunting feral hogs with a bow, broadheads only. I just wanted to ask you guys that live down there. Alabamas regs state the same thing on small game seasons.
Counting Coup on an ugly narly boar with a judo might be fun :bigsmyl:
Steve 56 thanks for clearing that up for me.
Wudstix I like the way you think.
Broadheads are fine during small game season.
Camping is permitted on the WMA's right?
Camping is fine on WMA's unless specifically prohibited. Most WMA's have campgrounds. Broadheads during small game season are fine. Good luck and have fun.
Small Game: Legal weapons for small game hunting
(excluding waterfowl) during Daylight hours are shotguns using #2 shot or smaller, rifles or handguns no larger than .22 rimfire (which includes .22 mag- nums), muzzleloading rifles .40 caliber or smaller, and archery equipment using arrows with points oth- er than broadheads.
The above is how it's stated in Mississippi WMA regs. From what I gather officials are scared to death a hunter might use a broadhead to kill large game during this time which if I'm not mistaken is why they have enforcement. This reg. however only costs pig hunters the last half of Feb. because once the spring turkey season opens broadheads can be used. Now provided hogs are the nuisance animal the state recognizes them to be one would assume provisions could be made for broadhead use.
You can even carry a centerfire now during small game bc bobcat and fox are now legal with them.
