Here is another string question:
Do you guys shooting longbows attach a nock point or do you go with your instincts?
-
I have wind a thread around the string at the nocking point and use a little fingernail polish to set it.

I've been using two brass nock points for a while. One above/one below. Think I'll change to a tied on nock soon. Kinda looks cool and won't damage my shooting glove.
... mike ... :)
-
I tie em on...with an extra piece of serving thread, or waxxed dental floss.
-
I use upholstery thread for mine above and below.
-
One regular nock for me.
-
I use a tye on nock with dacron fishing line. Let's me move it up and down till I find the sweet spot.
-
I think you would do well to have some sort of nock point or locator on your string, whether it is a recurve or longbow.

Yup, I Agree....What ChuckC said! :archer: :goldtooth:

I tie on one nock point above the arrow. I use B50 and a drop of glue. I can wind the nock point up or down on the serving until I get it where I want it. They last quite a while and don't wear out my glove or my finger like the brass ones do. Brass are hard to adjust as well.
-
Me, too. Tied on nocking point, arrow below the nocking point. Howard Hill nocked the arrow above the nocking point, claiming it was faster, but I can't get an arrow to stay on the string that way.
-
When hunting, I prefer two nocking points. For just shooting, one seems enuf.
-
Just one above never heard or seen an archer not shooting with at least one.

ALL bows ABSOLUTELY MUST have at least one carefully placed and tested nock point on the bowstring.
Without at least one bowstring nock point, you will never ever be consistently accurate.

I don't think Mickey uses one. Of course he only shoots like 8 yards max. Carries one arrow, doesn't use camo. ... Makes all his own gear... sits one the ground to hunt...
Mickey is my Hero! LOL
I'm not as primative myself. I haven't learned to tie them on yet and still crimp on the metal ones. Of course I am hunting with a selfbow rivercane arrows and obsidian heads all made by me....
GREAT now I have to learn something else ...

Making a tie-on nock point is super easy. I like using B50 Dacron but even dental floss works fine. Use simple overhand knots, about 4 to 8, pull tight, coat the nock point with thin CYA (Krazy Glue or most any SuperGLue will work), allow to harden, snip off the tag ends with a nail clipper, recoat the nock point - lightweight, durable, won't harm arrow nocks like the metal ones can.

Here's a very good reference page on hand tying a nock point -

IF you don't know where your nock point should go, you NEED to experiment.
For a test nock point, the metal band type works great and is movable.
If you coat the string's center serving well with wax, then tie on your nock point not so tight, you should be able to swivel the thread nock point up and down the center serving - kinda like a threaded nut on a machine screw.
-
Yes you need a nocking point. Nocking points were invented by trad guys for crying out loud :knothead: :knothead: :bigsmyl: ...Van

Thanks Rob.
I think I can handle that.
Take care.
-
Van, you kill me. :biglaugh:

Well OK the nocking point stays; but what's up with this string thing anyway?

What "string thing" are you referring to?
-
Bjorn, I don't think strings are necessary either. I've also wondered about these long wires on my guitar... There's SIX of the dang things...??? :smileystooges:
