Title: Question about making strings
Post by: TroyH on October 02, 2007, 07:00:00 PM
I'm just getting into making my own bow, but I have a question about strings.
For those who make selfbows and boardbows, do you generally use B-50 material?
Do you make a loop on one end and use a bowyers knot on the other?
Or do you buy a string to length?

Making your own seems less expensive if you are going to need several.

I make Flemish twist strings to length using B-50 or FF material for selfbows. The only time I use the bowyers' knot is for my tillering string so that it is adjustable. There are some good How-To threads on string making or get someone to show you. Easy to show - hard to explain.

"Doing the twist" is a great video, a bit rough on the exposure in some places but full of great info.

You could also google it and come up with lots of good sites that help out. John Scifres site is the one that got me going originally.
