Title: New Years Day Stumping
Post by: centaur on January 01, 2015, 11:39:00 AM
Went out for a while this morning in the Sonoran desert. A very light snow overnight made the desert come alive. Snow in this part of the world is fairly rare, so it was neat to wander around. The higher elevations got measurable snow, but I was at about 2500 feet.

While looking for a target that wouldn't break my arrow, I came across this little buck. Desert mulies are ghostlike; they disappear into the brush before your eyes.

This little buck wasn't aware of my presence until his girlfriends, which I had not seen before, clued him in that a human was close by.

There were 6 does and the small buck. I found a cholla skeleton that was clear of any major rocks, and let fly from about 30 yards. I wish I could do this consistently on animals.

The Morningstar and I had a very pleasant hike in the desert, and it sure is nice to be in some warmer weather, even if the Arizona residents think that it is cold. Sunny and temps in the 30s suits me just fine, but I am looking forward to more hikes in even warmer temps in the near future.

Beautiful pics centaur. I've been blessed enough to travel all over the country but Wyoming is still on my list of places to get to.  I have been to Arizona and it's one of my favorite places in the US. I've been to the desert when it's hot but never when snow was on the ground. The high desert in New Mexico is beautiful country.

I love that shot of the does on alert. You really captured a moment. Great shooting too btw.

Having come from that area, it's definitely more tolerable in the "winter" time but it wouldn't break my heart if I didn't return to that AZ heat. Nice pics, thanks for the walk down memory lane  :)

Charlie, I have done some calling, but I don't buy an Arizona license, so I can only watch, not shoot. Knowing my luck, I will probably call up a mountain lion, of which there are quite a few around here.
